I figured that i would start this. I found out about Eve, when i was deployed to Japan. I was walking past the lounge window when I see this guy on his laptop. Then I saw him playing Eve and I walked in and asked him. He showed me the screen and gave me the website address. So a month later, when I had the money to buy a laptop, I joined. Been playing since 2004. Tell me of your start to this addicting game that we all can't seem to stop playing... |

I've heard about it for years, due to its infamy for huge heists, betrayals, dev scandals and scams (EVE Investment bank, lawl... 700 billion ISK worth of suckers).
I decided to start playing because I love space ships and sci-fi, I like EVE's attitude, and I don't really like any of the other MMOs out there. ________________

Personally, I found EVE while doing random game searches online. Came upon it a couple of times and thought "Meh" and moved on. Until the day I read about the Guiding Hand heist. I thought... "Oh cool", and started watching the vids on the EVE-O site. Signed up, and been here ever since (beyond the couple of month break, due to finances). *** "Some would call me a Demon. Quit lineage 2 over 2 years ago because it was overrun by ISK selers and bots. Tried 4 or 5 other , mostly horrible online games looking for a replacement. (Horizons..)
Settled on EVE for its balanced and unique ships.
Now EVE has become a farmer infested hell just like lineage 2 and the recent game nerfs have ruined the uniqueness and balance of game.
Looks like i am leaving EVE now.

Back in the day when I used Gamespy to find matches for AvP2 and such...I saw an ad for EvE. Looked great...online rpg set in space....what more could I want?! I remember paying I think like $10 to dl the full game and play a month for free? It was something pretty cheap I remember that.

I think I saw an advertising banner for Eve on the website of the now-defunct Aikida webcomic. I was getting sick of DAoC and was ready for a replacement MMO. Following a spaceship around didn't seem at the time like it would be a good replacement for more traditional fantasy-themed MMOs, but I'm sure glad I took a chance on it.

I found EVE back in its alpha stages in 2001.
I was thinking.. wouldn't it be cool if.. and started googling "space virtual world mmo". Actually that didn't find EVE, but what I did find were the Freelancer forums on Lancer's Reactor (at the time some people thought Freelancer was going to be an MMO) and someone posted a link to EVE. Checked it out, and the rest is history.

I had been playing a game called Second life, was to the point where I was really bored with it so I spent most of my time in the forums where I came across a link about the Guiding Hand heist. So I came to the forums here and read about it. After reading differen't articles about the game I thought I'd give it a try and been playing ever since...even though my wife hates it. _____________________________________________ I Survived Bootini and all they gave me was this stupid forum post |

I'm amazed no-one's mentioned X so far. I found EVE really early on through the X:BtF forum. I knew as soon as I started playing that it would suck all life and time away from me so I resisted, played the rest of the X series and nearly escaped from space sims altogether. Then in 2006 some ba****d at work brought the client in on a USB key and got me to load it up. I didn't even get a trial. I paid for a month and upgraded it to a yearly subscription within my first 2 weeks. 2 years later I've visited every 0.0 system in the galaxy but I've still got 4 years worth of training ahead of me to learn every skill and use (however badly) every item and ship. After that I'll have to re-evaluate my goals ...

How: I frequent http://www.mmorpg.com/
When: 2005, had just stopped my work as GM in a (small) game and was looking for a 'filler'. Been in WoW since release when my brother told me he was going to aim for EVE instead of WoW. Followed him here. Have had EVE under consideration for a while but the ads on mmorpg looked incredibly boring, to be honest. I was expecting a low-graphic version of SWG.
Why: Got stuck due to the economical and political part of EVE, game has great potential, compared to other mmo's you never 'finish' the game. Still 2.5 year later I am learning new stuff at a frequent basis. EVE has some bad aspects as well but I see myself playing this game 'til it ends.
Am looking for a new filler soon tho, I miss the mmo's where your own invested time pays off. Pure grind, no level cap and hero levels appeals to me. And EVE is very forgiving for not spending the whole day in it, which is awsome and one reason it will prevail in my gaming. Easy to 'cheat' on EVE and be active in multiple ones.

I was on holidays in Britain, and wanted something to read on the flight home, so picked up a copy of UK Gamer (i think) and there was a 4 page spread on this game that apparently no-one knew about, and everyone should try. at the time i had no internet connection, but i moved house and got a dialup connection, and kissed all my spare time goodbye. since then (Feb 2005) EVE has cost me 3 GF's, a job and countless hours of frustration, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I played Ultima more years ago than I can count. Then about 3 to 4 years ago I spent a year+ on Lineage 2. Recently found myself in a situation where I had nothing to do with a lot of time on my hands and decided to find a new MMO.
Searched the sites and read this here and that there. Decideed to try EVE as it was different than the fantasy Genre. I escaped falling into the WOW trap.
I decided to try it because of the free trial and the fact that I did not need to buy it from a store and could just do it all from online. Been intrigued ever since I started a little over a month ago.
Have not given PvP a shot yet, and my few ventures into 0.0 with a shuttle taught me I'm not ready, so I have much to experience yet. Creating a nest egg was high on my priorities to begin with and I found the market (buying and selling) profitable enough to make my first 1/2 Billion.
Right now I am just a Care Bear Mission Runner learning the ropes and creating enough wealth to lose ships in PvP when I am skilled up.
I am somewhat leary of all the complaints regarding LAG though.
It is definately different than other MMO's and for that reason I am sticking around for awhile.
The real time factor with regards to Leveling/Skilling up is an interesting difference to the average grind of other MMO's. Although it is replaced with the grind of wealth building to economicly afford the PvP aspect and that I find a welcome change to a large extent.

I initially heard about it back in 01 when they first released it on the EnB forums. At the time I could only afford one game so I stuck with EnB until sunset and forgot about EvE. Than about 2 years ago my buddy showed me some in game stuff and blowing up rats, and some pvp, showed me the articles about the heists and scams and pretty much everything you could think of was allowed. A while later I was splatting some orc or something in WOW pretty bored with the relentless grind. I wandered off and rummaged through the attic for something else to play - and found the Eve box. Of course it wouldnt load up from the CD but I found the forums and d'loaded.

I'd heard little things about it in random places on the interwebs, especially when I was considering picking up Anarchy Online (ended up not getting it and going with City of Heroes as my first mmo instead). Then the Guiding Hand Social Club heist article in PC Gamer refreshed my interest, but at the time I was still heavily into City of Heroes. About a year later, a few of the CoH people I played with went to Eve, persuaded me to get a trial and the rest is history. Finally cancelled my CoH accounts last month after 3+ years, the last year+ having been largely inactive due to Eve addiction.

Epic fleet battles sounded sweet and I was looking for something PvP based that wasn't another fps. I paid for the first month on day 10 of the two week trial and found a nice empire griefer corp in my time zone to learn to pvp with.

Played EVE a few times in the past, but on dialup and a slow computer it wasn't so fun, so I dropped it each time after a month or so.
Last year read the article about the GHSC heist and came back for a look around, was still on dialup so it took a day to patch, then I accidentally restored my HD to a save point. Faced with having to spend a whole day downloading again I quit again.
Got EVDO broadband and a new computer. For some reason WoW will not run properly on it, so I quit MMORPGs for a while, then signed back up for EVE after seeing the Trinity ads and found that it worked great on my new PC and EVDO.
I intend to stay this time.
After reading this thread it looks like the Guiding Hand Social Club Heist was a great marketing tool.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, considering the number of players who came here from SWG.
After SWG went through the whole Combat Upgrade/NGE fiasco, i wanted something Sci-Fi, and EVE was on top of MMORPG lists. So gave it a try and loving it since.

I was playing Jumpgate back when the EVE beta 1st came out.. I don't remember if I heard about it from a forum or found it on my own. I signed up for the early beta but it was already filled.. I didn't get let in until like middle to late beta. Enough time to spend a few weeks playing it and got hooked.
I seemed to have lots of bug probs in beta so I gave it a month after release see how ppl said it played. They told me it played like 10x better then the beta so I signed up and thats the rest of the story... been here ever since.

My former husband and son both started playing about a year before I signed up. After a year of participating in nonstop convo's about the game with them, and even joining on TS with my former husband's corpies, I just had to create myself and become part of the insanity.

Beta trials 2003.
I was bored of playing Masters of Orion 3 so I went on google and typed something like sci fi rpg, and EVE poped. Registered for the beta and gained access. Played on it and was part of the final day, was it called "armaggeddon"? where all skills were set to level 5 and we had billions in our wallets to buy everything we wanted.

I stumbled over the EvE website in I think 2001, back when it was still all very vague. It sounded cool, but I only followed it for a few months and then forgot about it again. I played EQ1 all the while EvE was developed and released.
I remember once seeing the EvE retail box in a store and holding it in my hand thinking i'd like to play it, but I put it back because I was heavily involved in EQ1 still back then.
So another 2 years after EvEs release I surfed around the web looking for Privateer Nostalgia, I downloaded the Privateer 1 3D project, played it and it sucked. Then I remembered about EvE again and that it must be alot like Privateer abck then, just cooler.
Also, my bonds in EQ1 had been less strong by then and I was looking for alternatives. So FINALLY I downloaded the trial... well and the rest is history. Allthough I took another year absence in between for a last EQ1 visit I am now fulltime EvE citizen.

I got tricked by an ad. I saw a spaceship, mind you, obviously I had to click on it. The intro movie got me well planted on my chair. The music on the character creation page got me inspired. Then the first time I heard 'Warp Drive Active' the impressive tunnel effect got me hooked.

How: I frequent http://www.mmorpg.com/ (as per previous poster)
When, and Why: 2005, I was GMing and deving for a shard, actually 2, Ultima Online based shards. Etheria: www.etheria.org and Sunder: http://www.sundershard.com . I needed a break from Ultima Online... and at the time I was playing GuildWars mostly PvPing. What got me really excited about GW is that for the time invested you could have a lot of fun, and you could PvP in 5 mins. Often very demanding pvp, with 20vs20 fights etc... great stuff. (Eve is a lot better imho, but then there's the subscription.) Eve is the only subscription game I've played after Ultima Online, which I started in 1997 and stopped paying the subscription on 1998. Then started playing on a player run roleplaying shard called Mytharria, what a great place, actually more content. Allowed for building your own house, block by block, or hiring someone to do it for you-- I could go on and on.. mytharria one day crashed and the devs decided to let it kick the bucket. So I came across eve online on mmorpg.com, and liked the fact that you could use the trial without having to get your CC charged. Yes trials are supposed to be free, lol. I got hooked on Eve online for a few reasons. Massively online gaming universe, I love the idea of having everybody on one server. Every previous mmorpg has based their story on "magic" and fantasy... I was getting tired of all the fantasy ****-- just doesn't make sense to me. Eve online is at least believable, a lot of the mods used, and ships could be reality in 651646846514 years :P So that pretty much sums my story.

I don't rember how i found eve but i know that i found it early in the beta since i was in the closed beta.
I miss the days of old npc guard ships failing badly to stop any type of pvp in high sec and the last day of the beta where i took 10 mate's to rens in geddons/apoc's to pwn all. Death is great rember where all dying to get there. |

I read about it back in 2005, and it really intrigued me. I played Everquest for three years, taking minimal breaks, and eventually left that for SWG (which only lasted a couple of months). I needed something new, and this spaceship game with an anything goes attitude really caught my eye. I made an account in May of 2005 and started playing. After a month or so I think I was feeling really overwhelmed, so I stopped playing and checked out some other MMOs. I bounced around to other MMOs, FFXI, EQ1 (brief return), Vanguaurd, WOW, etc. I would usually get bored after a while and end up looking at EVE again. In May of 2007 (oddly, two days before my character's 2nd birthday) I rejoined and have been playing since. I honestly can't see myself stopping for any real reason, and I'm really upset that I played more off than on since May of 2005, as I could have so much more SP .

I actually found EVE while searching the internet for a site that would let me buy a downloadable copy of Freelancer, since I had fond memories of it. No luck, but I guess finding EVE made up for it, since I'm still playing 1.5 years later

A few years back one of my friends gave me a game magazine to read, and he told me about this story about how a guy infiltrated a corp and managed to steal a huge amount of money and destroy a very valuable ship. I think it was the Guiding Hand thing, but he was interested in it and after reading that so was I.

I was talking to big blue whale (it turned out later that whale was one of Grimpaks forms) and whale told me about EVE online.
I told him its too far away for me to fly there, but he explained me I just need to download some program and I'll be ok. I did that and I curse every day I listened Grimpak.

We all are. Yet only some of us know!
I saw Eve a number of times on the shelf in Game. I didn't like the idea of a subscription, despite the boxed game being only about ú10. So I held back.
Until around August 2004; when I decided I had to try it. Except for my first year of Uni which started that September where I was unable to play (thought I so longed to!) I have played, and paid ever since.
Not sure anything will stop me now!

i saw my sisters Boyfriend play this game when it first came out, I was playing Anarchy Online at the time. Whenever i saw him play he was sitting there looking at roids with a laser hitting it, i though "wow how boring" and carried on playing Anarchy
Then 7 months ago alot of my friends moved over to here, and i tried it, and got hooked instantly, i only wish i started back when i saw it :)Only thing is the people who moved over hardly play, where im playing all the time hehe.

First and only MMO so far, found it around April 2005 when I was looking for an MMO to play. Before then, games I'd played had no real long-term impact, it was mindless but fun shooters or RTS's.
I found out my friends were doing so at the exact same time, and decided to go to EVE as well. I outlasted them big time.

Was looking for a complex and interesting game in 2006.
I spent a good deal of time on the Star Trek Legacy forums, waiting for that game to come out, hoping for starship combat and instead getting an xbox port.
Maddoc software is forever in my Hall of Shame for developers.
I got into EVE and only left for a few months to command ground forces in Supreme Commander. I brought some people with me, most of whom are still playing.

Alas, I took onboard too much of the information given too me, and made a super efficient Caldari character that bored me to death, so I never renewed my trial account.
About a month later, I decided to have another shot at it, but this time I would go for what I found fun, rather than what was most efficient. And here I am.
