If you said Brutix, then I assume you are Gallente and focus on Gallentean ships.
Simply enough, go for whichever ship has the most high slots, and then equip CPU upgrades to allow maximum number of mining lasers as possible.
-Frigate: Navitas, because it's a specialized mining ship. -Cruiser: Thorax, for its 5 high slots. -Battlecruiser: Either works... I think both the Brutix and the Myrmidon have the same number of high slots IIRC. -Battleship: Technically, the Hyperion - although the Megathron will be a safer investment. Though, by the time you reach this level, you'll want to seriously consider mining barges.

I have to disagree and say Exequror is better for mining, at least when you're solo in lowsec.

Don't use a thorax for mining, use a Vexor. You can hold 5 mining drones and 5 medium scouts for protection. Far more efficient, if you have drones 5 that is.

what about an Amarr mining character? I'm in a Tormentor at the moment.

I admit I don't know much about Amarr ships, but for mining i'd get an Arbitrator. Its basically the Amarr version of the Vexor, and that will work well solo mining in high sec for the same reasons it works with the Vexor.

Edited by: Aaron Ravenwood on 03/02/2008 15:45:26 A lot of this depends on your situation.
If you can mine with others - then the number of lasers you fit really matters. Same thing if you are mining alone but dumping your ore into a jet can and coming back later with an industrial to pick it up (if it's still there ...).
If you are mining alone and hauling the ore back to base - then your cargo hold is more important as having a bigger hold will cut down on the number of trips you have to make.
Sorry I can't offer better advice on the Amarr mining cruisers. But the things to look for in their Show Info listing is - number of high slots to fit miners on - and the size of their cargo holds.
I, for example happen to agree that the Exequror is a better miner than the Thorax - specifically because it has a bigger hold. The Exequror is NOT a as good a combat ship as the Thorax but it's cargo capacity does make it a better miner.
One thing about that Tormentor. If you fit 3 Expanded Cargo Hold II's on it ... it can hold a good bit of stuff for a frigate.
Of course ... if you really want to be a miner ... then Cruisers is not the way to go - mining barges are. The trouble with getting into Cruisers - if you are going to be a dedicated miner - is that you'll end up spending time training skills to try and use them in combat - which will slow down getting your mining barge. Of course ... it will give you a combat ship and another capability ... so it all depends on what you want to do.
The best mining solution is - Team Mining with a Mining Barge mining and an Industrial Hauling.
But if you really want to be a combat guy ... then working your way up from cruisers to battleships is also a path many choose. Battleships have pretty big holds too. They'll not compete with dedicated mining barges but then they can mine a lot better than a barge can fight.
*shrug*
I've seen people mining in Hurricane's and such ... but not done it myself.

For Amarr there is no better Frigate for mining as the Tormentor because of the mining-bonus the ship has. You can install two Miner II mininglaser for optimal performance. The problem is, that the ship is undefended with that fitting. Try a hobgoblin scoutdrone for defense against rats and stay in 0.8 or 0.9 systems. You might even try 0.7 but be prepared to make a qick escape when more then two rats come. It would sometimes be nice to have a Cruiser but the Amarr-cruisers have no mining-bonus. If you are really fond of mining and want to upgrade you ship, buy a Retriever and equip it with 4 Hobgoblins (Scout drones) for defense. This should take care of the rats down to o.5 systems. Buy a Punisher and fit it for rat-hunting. If theyare pestering you too much warp out with your Retriever and get the Punisher from the station to clean out the belt.

Just a small correction: The Amarr "Arbitrator" cruiser has a mining bonus for drones. That coupled with 4 mining lasers in the highs makes for a decent mining cruiser, and you still have plenty of space in the drone bay for defense. I would agree with the suggestion to get into a barge soon after though if you like mining, but ignore the "Procurer" and skip right over to the "Retriever". The Procurer is severely hampered by only having 1 high slot. Most mining cruisers can out-perform it, and it's only about a day (maybe 2) of training to get into a Retriever (which can fit 2 Strip Miners, and thus is a great beginners barge).
You can also fit 5 light scout drones in a Retriever class barge. You'll need the skill "Drones" to level 5, but it's a critical skill anyways. As a miner, drones will be the bulk of your defense in most situations, and that skill is the most basic and important in the drone skill tree.
Good luck out there.

Edited by: Siadyu on 04/02/2008 15:34:30 Edited by: Siadyu on 04/02/2008 15:32:59 With Amarr Cruiser II, you can do this with an Omen to hold you over while you train for your mining barge or battleship:
[Omen, Mining] Mining Laser Upgrade I Co-Processor I Expanded Cargohold I Expanded Cargohold I Expanded Cargohold I
[empty med slot] [empty med slot] [empty med slot]
Miner I Miner I Miner I Miner I Standard Missile Launcher I, Sabretooth Light Missile
[Light scout drones] Acolyte I x1 Acolyte I x1 Acolyte I x1
As an Amarr character, it will take him a few weeks of dedicated drone training to obtain the skills necessary to use a mining drone. Also note that the Arbitrator fits two mining lasers, not four, making it useless for a beginning miner.
