Blizzard got an injunction to stop them from spamming in-game or offering any of their 'services'. The original lawsuit was filed back in May though.
Nice precedent at least. Would be nice if CCP could do this too.

Without even reading the article (coz it wasn't linkaged lol) - doesn't usually companies performing such "advertisments" just drop the company and make a new one and continue with their spammage as they generate more income from it than to simply go to court etc?

Possibly. At the very least this adds to their administrative overhead.

While an interesting gesture, the fact remains that Blizard has done nothing to confront the larger gold sellers. Peons4hire was simply too visible with it's annoying tactics. CCP, SOE and Blizard (among others) allow many, many known currency farming characters to operate unmolested each and every day. And, in fact, it can be argued that certain game mechanics are purposely left in game to assist with currency acquisition by these companies.
Surely, most know that gold sellers own and operate nearly ever major gaming site on the net at this point and one does not have to look very hard to see that indeed some gaming companies may be benefitting monetarily from kickbacks.
I'm basically an Eve noob but here's a couple observations just from a couple months of play:
1) Ingunn. Even noobs like me have seen it first hand 2) Pro farmers don't ever have to pay one cent to farm isk in this game 3) Sell a GTC and various people will commit to buy it yet hold out from purchase intentionally tying up your GTC so they can sell theirs 4) A rookie help channel that is so infested with isk selling spam that it's insane, yet you cannot get rid of the channel for what, a month?
I believe this is how it works:
Annoying upstarts and spammers like Peons4hire are routinely crushed by gaming companies as fast as they can find them but the largest currency seller is left alone and even shown mechanics to increase currency taken in. Gaming companies yell and stomp at times about their curtailment of pro farming but in reality we all know that a door is being left wide open for some of these people to operate freely.
Big deal. Blizard has forced some little operation to stop spamming. When are they going to actually stop the gold selling? With 75% of the WoW accounts originating in Asia (their numbers not mine) I can assure you the answer to that is never.

Edited by: ghosttr on 03/02/2008 22:28:27 I think one of the major sites gaming companies should hit is ebay. Ebay sell isk, accounts, and even macro programs. If they did that we woundt see jenny anymore

The problem is, Blizzard had to fight the smaller companies first, otherwise they would risk the bigger companies buying better lawyers than them, and a loss this early in the game for Blizzard could have set a bad precedent for future game.
I'm just relieved they pulled it off. =p

Don't you find it interesting that the EULA is changed to forbid commercial activities in game at the same time ?... Maybe CCP is actually going to follow that precedent.

I can see more companies, other than CCP, doing that also. *** "Some would call me a Demon. Others, a Vampire. But if the truth be told, I'm a child of the moon and a Goddess among men." Free pint of blood for the Dev who agrees |

Dont know if it was mentioned yet, but part of the settlement is if they try to start up a new company or advertise through any other companies they are liable for a very hefty fine. _______________________________________________

Quote: The Peons4Hire website is down.
this says it all tbh. I very much doubt anything is going to change, though it's nice that companies are at least appearing to take action - which begs the question, when are CCP going to do something?
