Ok im English, and I watched a bit of the superbowl last night. OMG it was the most amazing pile of crap I've ever seen. The game itself isn't that bad, albeit its complicated, I didn't have a clue what was going on (I didn't when I first watched rugby but I still enjoyed it). It's the fact that...they start playing for about 30 seconds and then it just stops and they run off the field for 15 minutes...WTF?
I dont know how anybody could bear watching that sport of advertisements, and how ANYBODY could say its tougher than rugby. The only thing american football has in is big hits, which I didn't see many of anyways. In rugby your being mauled non-stop by some 6 ft 3 18 stone beast and getting stamped on with bladed boots. Just my thoughts on what I saw...hopefully I will never see it ever again. Theres a reason these baseball and american football are only popular in america...and I've seen it tonight.

Wow, more American hate. I find it ironic that he's making fun of an American game when we can point solidly to Cricket (sp?) and still laugh.
Different cultures have different likes and games to suit them. The fact that you play EvE and a few hundred million people decide they would rather play another MMO (WoW, Lineage, UO, SWG, various chinese mmo's) should have keyed you off to that. But nope, you just had to make another one of "those" posts.

Cricket is just Baseball with a tea break. Personally, I find both a little dull. ------

Cricket is a good summer game with a great atmosphere. I saw a statistic somewhere, in a baseball game that was one and a half hours long, there was 9 minutes of total play. Can't say the same about cricket, at least your watching a sport, and a skillfull and popular one at that.

Being a Brit, I've obviously watched and played a lot more Cricket, but I have seen and played a fair few Baseball games too. I probably enjoy Cricket more on the whole, but I rarely have the patience for a whole one-day (let alone a 5 day Test). Twenty20 is promising, though.

I hate American Football, but I believe its more dangerous than Rugby. All the armour they wear allows them to hit much harder making it more brutal.

Having played both, no where near a professional level, both have good and bad. Rugby, while a tough sport that requires a high level of physical strength, American Football is fast, hard hitting and a lot more dangerous. The level of hitting us much harder in AF but both are great games.

Im not denying that american football has bigger hits, but the players of american football are more steroid aided "tools" more than sportsmen, somebody said that the average career of an american football player was about 3 and a half years? (might be wrong). But rugby is in general much more of a mans game without a doubt. If you think rugby doesn't have big hits also, check out this link.

Yeah, the superbowl isnt the game to watch if you are a first time watcher. The NFL is pimping the **** out of it right now because its being watched in 30 countries and 22 languages. So there are breaks in the game just for comercial air time. Half time is also twice as long. It sucks.
A tid bit though...Quenton Jammer wieghs like a 150 lbs at corner back. When he hits you at full speed, he delivers almost 5000 lbs of impact force. That is why they wear titanic pads in football. Rugby is a heavily physical contact sport. Football is impact. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. As a colonial myself I love American football. But even the NFL Superbowl bored me to tears except for maybe the last 1 minute of the game. If you want to see real American football then tune in to some of the college games, thats where the real action is at.
Summary: I'm American, I love football, I find the NFL extremely boring, watch the collegiate level.

One word: TIVO
Nobody watches ads anymore. The entire playtime of any pro football game is about 40 minutes of non-stop action with a few 'bloop bloop bloops' of 30 second skip in between.

See, cricket is about tea, baseball is about beer. Just think of a baseball park as a different sort of pub and it will go much better for you.
Even though I like tea I vote for baseball myself.

Yeah im pretty sure that the baseball players go and drink beer half way through the game...and im also sure cricket crowds sit there quietly sipping tea...

Just another point, I never said the game was really bad. It was complicated, but when there was certain runs of play it was kinda interesting to watch...and when I got close to picking something up...WHACK a 30 minute break came on and it was like...wtf??

You got to hand it to them, having some of the dullest sports invented by man it has produced what is possibly the best sports commentators around.
When I found out NHL night was getting domestic commentators on the cable channels it pretty much killed it for me, so horrible they are...

Big Rugby Hits
More hits
That is just wrong on many counts.
Some may well use steroids but regardless they are all exceptional athletes at that level. The really big guys (offensive linemen)tend to be fat and huge. They are meant to be a hard to move wall. Defensive linemen are big as well to move that wall (like sumo wrestlers almost). Despite that they are remarkably quick. Willian "The Fridge" Perry was over 370 pounds and he could run a 50 yard dash faster than me and was able to jump higher (they tried hard to get him down to around 300 where he would have been devastating but never happened).
Then you get to your running backs. Big yet quick and nimble. They use their size to run through the line and are still "small" (at around 200 pounds) to be agile and amazingly fast for their size. Here's Walter "Sweetness" Payton and Barry Sanders (two of the best runningbacks ever). They were amazing to watch and most definitely sportsmen of the highest caliber.
Then you get wide receivers and kick/punt returners. These guys are just all speed. The Chicago Bears once had an Olympic class sprinter on their team as a receiver (sadly he did not have very good hands but when he did catch it he was gone). The Chicago Bears currently have Devin "The Windy City Flyer" Hester for kick returns and he looks to be the best ever (really...already set NFL records). He is insanely fast...when you think he is at top speed he's got more. He scares opposing teams so much now that they will kick short and spot the Bears 20+ yards just to keep it out of Hester's hands.
So, I am missing where the lack of "sportsmen" is here.
And in case you think American style football players are wimps consider that since the 1930's there have been over 1000 deaths attributed to playing football. Before that it was even more dangerous and the president of the United States (Teddy Roosevelt) threatened to ban the game unless they changed the rules (which they did).
Even with pads and helmets and all they still hit damn hard. Trust me, you can put all the pads on you want and you will still know it when one of these guys steamrolls you.

I prefer this, Rugby Union>Rugby League>American Football. I stayed up until 5am yesterday at our Superbowl party, just to watch the Pats defence and blockers suck, and Brady get sacked. AF is very similar to Rugby League, and is just a deviation of rules.
The only problem I have with AF it that it takes 3hrs to watch a 1hr game, Also the amount of people around the field seems excessive.
Someone (An American) said to me that AF is growing around the world, because the number watching the Super Bowl is increasing. But I think, while the numbers watching the SB is increasing, it isn't going go to overtake any other national sport (or even played professionally) in any other country, because a one off event is good, but every weekend is the problem at 3hrs long.
Also the Half time show was bad. Whats with saying the Giants are world champions? Surely that status is only gained if you beat all the other national teams in the sport? It's like saying Canadians are world champions at being Canadians.

I must agree with the OP. And that seems at odds with America's ADD lifestyle. Baseball is a bad example (it's been dwindling in popularity for a long time whereas the NFL has had stadiums with sold-out crowds for 30+ years straight), but AF's stop-and-go nature doesn't fit with the constant gratification image that you normally see in America's TV and movies.
It's not like there aren't sports that aren't constantly on the move. The NHL is out there, but has taken some stumbles the last few years. Basketball is out there, and would be constantly moving if not for the fact that they get fouls every other shot. But AF is the one that gets all the headlines.
I suspect the answer is that AF's rules work better with showing commercials with the game, so broadcasters feel better about giving it a good time slot. After a few generations of getting hooked on it, most Americans don't notice anymore that only 1 play in 10 is worth watching, and all those will be shown in the post-game show, anyway.
