Anyone else seen an issue like this b4? have a single saphire ati hd3870 running stock settings, on win xp home sp2, 2gb mem & 2.4Ghz intel dual core. I'm pretty sure the prob is with the graphics card.
Usually just as im warping into a system (not all systems tho). Just as I arrive the pc will just turn off and then for a while I rejoin whilst warping into the same system and the preoblem repeats over and over until I just leave it a little while. last crash happend as I was jumping into dodixie from botane.
I've flashed the bios with the correct update relating to the fan speed issue also new drivers, and catalyst to 8.1. heat not a problem now, a'm monitoring all temps pre crash and there fine.
anybody any ideas?
event log shows this at time of crash:

Looks like it's possibly a problem with either the graphics card or the driver. Try turning VPU Recover off in CCC.
If your PC locks up rather than shutting down then something is causing the card to stop communicating with the driver. The VPU recover option has been known to cause problems and if you are lucky the problem might go away.

No Problem at all with the 3870, first as single card, now as Crossfire System. The shutdown of your system you mentioned is normaly a sure sign for hardware malfunctions or maybe a problem with the power supply. What power supply are you using?

Thanks for responding guys,
I've pretty much ehausted all avenues now: heres what i dont to try and fix this issue.
-check all temps everything normal -update all drivers on everything right up to the point of d/ling .net3.0 -turn the graphics right down. -flash bios of gpu to fix slow fan speed. -mobo bios flashed to latest. -reinstall windows & eve client.. twice -stopped onboard sound drivers. -tryed a cheepy pci sound card - it once worked for a mate. -new psu.. now 850W thermaltake.. the one with the indipendent 12v rails so i know the graphics card is getting enough amps. -replaced graphics card with the same ati saphire 3870 512. -tryed using diffrent memory modules from a doner pc (crucial stable stuff) -bin'd the ati card now using a geforce 8800gts 512 (anyone want a saphire 512 3870 :) -new mobo board (Asus top of the range) and added another 8800gts on sli.
guess wot peeps.. still crashing
next i'm gonna try taking a large dump splat onto the cpu.. let ya all know how i get on, thining out loud here, i might wanna pinch it off and run before it hits the fan.

I have exactly the same problem by the sounds of it. I running a radeon x1950xt with up to date drivers.
When ever I go into a space station and try to hand in a mission the screen goes black for a few seconds and the Vpu recover message window comes up telling me to mail the problem to ATI. Only started happening since the patch.

I've been having a similar issue. When Trinity came out, I purchased a new ATI Radeon HD2900. Soon after installing it I started getting random complete system offs. I figured it was my power supply (antec 450w) that couldn't provide enough juice for the new massive card. So I ordered a new 800w power supply and installed it. Guess what.....same thing. So at that point I chalked it up as a bad video card and sent it back and got a new ATI hd3850. Installed the new video card, and once again....random power offs. I was THEN starting to think it was a temperature issue as both cards ran warm (case temps were fine though) and was about to purchase a new high flow case, before deciding to check here. So at this point, I don't believe it's temperature or power. There must be either a problem with the drivers or the game itself. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this as it's a PITA!!!! Luckily I haven't been in the middle of pvp and had it happen...yet.

I'm running a 3850 myself and am having similar issues but only in EvE, Iv'e had my PC on all day today and not had a problem, In EvE the screen goes black and it's almost as if the PC has stopped sending info to the Monitor,But the PCs still on I know it's not temp related as everything is normal Iv'e just turned off VPU recover and am doing a fresh EvE install hopefully thats going to sort this out.

Further to the above I did a fresh install of the EvE client and so far it seems to be holding up I wont be doing any missions until I'm 100% sure things are ok.

Not so fast with the standard ATI accusations. There's an older thread see http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=654902 or http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=688314 which indicate that its also nvidia. Comments suggest that graphic card maulers such as bioshock and crysis don't cause the same problems despite being much more demanding so its something that eve is doing that puts undue stress for no good reason

Got this issue too. Every day or so my old 7900GT system reboots for no apparent reason. It always seems to happen when selecting a jumpgate.
On the other hand, my 8800M GTS system is crashing to desktop every 20-60 minutes, on a consistent basis. Once again, when selecting jumpgates.

I am having the exact same problem: About 15 minutes or less into play, my computer completely shuts off, no errors or BSOD or anything. At first i thought it was my PSU, but when i ran diagnostics on it using a psu testing tool, it said everything was working fine... but then I realised that I only have this problem in EVE. I run my computer nearly all day, and the only time it crashes is when playing EVE. I am using 2 nVidia 7800 GTX's running in SLI, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. Note: The only thing recorded in the Event log at the time of the crash is "The previous system shutdown at (Time) was unexpected." and thats all it says.

I'm having this problem too. My cards are RED hot after it happens too. Every other game on the market runs fine. My PC was on for 2 months straight until I played trinity. EVE works fine when I use normal graphics. Back to the drawing board CCP.

I'm also having the same issue with my laptop. System specs should be more then enough, but especially when I warp into a stargate, the system crashes. I had the laptop replaced because the first one appeared to be over heating, but this one doesn't over heat and still does the same.
System specs: AMD Turion 64x2, 2.0ghz 2G RAM ATI Radeon X1270

Er note those two forum links I posted. One of them suggested that you set Present Interval in display and graphics tab in the options menu to something other than immediate. This is the equivalent of vsync and will stop eve from exceeding the refresh rate of the monitor limiting it to about 60 frames a second max (unless you're using an old CRT that goes faster). If you look at the FPS graph when in station (ctrl f) you'll notice it just hares off to 100+ fps unless you change this setting which is a gross hog if you happen to be doing something else on a second screen.

Thanks dude, that seems to have solved the problem for me.

Nevermind, it just delayed the shutdown. Now, if i sit in a station for over 15 minutes without leaving it, my computer crashes. better than 2 minutes i guess, eh?

I got an ATI card, model obviously doesn't matter, as i share the issue myself, but its ATI radeon 9600 PRO-Atlantis edition. (Old faithful AGP)
This flagship never stumbled upon problems, until CCP got panic to shove out another expansion, additionally with a fancy new splendid graphics engine. Well, where's the quality these days? did none of the benchmark and beta testers own any ATI card? Got a secret deal with nVidia or what's the matter around here? I know nVidia cards runs somewhat smoother, thats what makes it a bit irritating.
Me myself, am getting really annoyed, as there's no drivers issue, no bios issue, no heat issue, so there's only one solution left, as anything, i mean anything else on this system runs with no problem.. Like someone mentioned here already above..
Nice to let some steam out, fly safe..

Well, the Present Interval solution did not work. It seems to only happen when I either warp to gate or undock. The pc shutting down isn't what p|sses me off, it's the fact that all my settings (windows, overview, etc.) get completely wiped out.....sometimes.
CCP, do you have any input on this???????

Guys I am afraid this might have something to do with sound card and not video. It has been some time I am playing EVE and other games flawless but only with stereo setting because I was lasy to setup the full 5.1 settings.
Today I decided to change that and conected my home theater to my computer making full use of the 5.1 channels. Everything went fine, the tests each channel played well with the sound diagnostic software. Then I moved to games, played Team Fortress 2 OK, HL2 OK, then HL2 episode 2 and I got a message problem that I disregarded and finally I moved to EVE which off course showed some serious problems.
The problem was that everytime I warped the computer crashed and restarted.
I took some time to isolate the problem but I discovered that playing in stereo was ok, but everytime I tried to play it on 4 channels or more I got a crash.
Interesting, I disconected all cables and selected 6 channels mode. So in theory EVE is using the sound and the sound driver is actually playing everything in 6 channels, but...it DID NOT crash. huhhhhhh ?????
Then I conected the front cables, everything was ok, then I conected rear cables and again I got the crash, so I guess there is really something going on with the sound card and not with video card.
I will look into it during the week, but if someone else is having the same problem I guess it is a good idea to try to isolate the problem within the sound card area.
I will be looking this thread to see what you find out and also to post what I discover as well.
Good luck.

I do believe the last poster was correct in that it's the onboard sound EVE isn't playing nice with. I had the same issue with nearly the same hardware as the original poster, but after reading the last post my issue seems to have gone away. Though I didn't go so drastic as to knock my sound down to 2ch stereo, i'm still at 5.1 but what I did was to disable hardware acceleration under the audio tab in the ESC menu. No more rude crashes. My Mobo is using a Realtek ALC888 audio chipset. How many of the posters having this problem are using onboard audio I wonder.

I'm having the same problems with client and PC crashing continuously but only when I play EVE. I thought it might also be the audio drivers so I uninstalled the drivers and still had the same problems. As other posters have stated my PC only crashes when I play EVE and no other games. I've also seen other threads discussing this same topic and NONE of them have any comments from CCP so whats the deal? at least acknowledging there is a problem would stop people from wasting money by buying unnecessary new video cards and memory and PSU's.

I had a nasty problem with running multiple clients, it was due to activating the "HDR" feature under the Premium Graphics settings.
Dissabled it, I'm running 3 clients flawlessly at max FPS with Interval One.
Apparentlly HDR increases your GPU demand by a ton.
