Im flying a Rupture, which I hear is capable of level 3's, however Im getting opened up like a can of Tuna. It may be my strategy; prefering to use Autocannons over Artillary, or it may be my tanking skills... or it could be something else. Im not even sure if it's advisable to fly a cruiser into level 3's although I know folks do it, and Im trying to put some descent cash together to progress.
Possible other problems are so far I've tended to head straight at enemies to reduce my time to get in gun range. I guess I could tack to them (zig zag in). I've looked at the active hardener related skills but the wording doesn't "seem" like it's a panacea of tanking. I have artillary to swap out for the autocannons. I haven't tried the arty yet as they were great in L2's until a few missions where getting swamped by frigs became an issue thus the autocannons solved it nicely.
Anyway here are my armor tanking skills and ship setup... any help would be appreciated as Im running out of ideas...

Correct, doing lvl 3's in a cruiser is doable if you have very good skills, a good fittign and hve lots of experience. Of which you have neither. You're much better off using a Hurricane if you have armor tanking skills, or a Cyclone if your shield tanking is better.

Upgrading to a Battlecruiser will improve things hugely for a modest amount of skill points (though the ship is pricey).
You also get the benefit of drones which whilst not a big dps boost (until you put alot of skill points into that area)do help with especially against those frigate npcs that close quickly.

Edited by: Voidson on 05/02/2008 13:55:06 E-ghad Battlecruiser... hmnnn. I see the skill path to a Hurricane isn't that bad, however, 31 million isk... ouch... that's why I was trying to do level 3's in the first place.
Do level 3's afford enough isk to cover risking a 30 million + boat? Especially for a character that hasn't even seen 30 mil isk yet?
Maybe it's time to re-evaluate the L2 to L3 upgrade...
Maybe it's time to find a new source of income...

Are you salvaging? salvage generates a huge amount of income from the more valuble salavage items.
Again there is cost for the skill book and salvagers (best put into a dedicated destroyer to salvage after the battle).
Once you get settled on the lvl3 missions they do generate a significant amount of isk's between the bounty/salavage/loot.

Edited by: Voidson on 05/02/2008 14:23:33 Edited by: Voidson on 05/02/2008 14:19:47 Yep I salvage all my L2's. Of course Im only 3 bars into salvage... Maybe that's the problem but, I haven't seen the millions of isk per mission promised by salvage in L2's at least.
Salvage is a nice boon to my isk income thou. However, given my mission payouts and bounties in L2's are worth about a half a mill +, Im starting to believe it might be better to forget the loot and salvage and just blitz missions faster. Althought I doubt I will as looking in wrecks for loot is alot of fun lol, "almost" as fun as battle.
The cost for salvage was very worth it... and easily affordable. I could even see myself quickly obtaining the 31 million however, to make 31 million from scratch for me would take a while at this rate.
Possibly my salvage "slowness" is caused by using my rifter to salvage? I turn in the mission and then I MWD to wreck groups looting and salvaging. I guess I could buy a destroyer and skill and buy tractor beams but... That's alot of investment for just salvage... imho... maybe it would be so fast it would pay itself off in the speed difference between tractoring and MWD'ing between wrecks... heh... it seems counterintuitive to me. MWD'ing between wrecks is pretty fast and my cap is rock steady, so I've really steered away from tractor beams and destroyers as I feel they are not very flexible in use...(pretty much only for salvage)

Are you selling the loot you get from wrecks at whatever the market price is, or are you spending any time analysing what the sell price is and creating a sell order based on that?
When I first started playing I just sold everything using "Sell This Item" and didn't even pay any attention to the actual buy price of what I was selling. As a consequence there was quite a few things that I sold for stupidly low sums of money (e.g. 20k) that were actually worth 200k+.
If you're prepared to spend a bit of time when it comes to selling your salvage & loot you can definitely maximise your profits. I used to make ~1 million every 2-3 missions running level 1s, if memory serves.

lvl3 salvage is fine given the time cost to get it up.
Destroyer salvaging is very good as you can (depending on support skill level) fit 4 salvagers and 3 tractor beams. Get a number of wrecks into 20km range start pulling in with tractors and once you are down to 2/3 wrecks move onto next cluster of wrecks whilst pulling the last couple of wrecks along.
It is probably worth being selective about salavging. All npc types are not equal.

I check the "sell" prices on all loot I harvest. If there's a buyer that is within 10% of median "sell" price I sell to them. If there's no buyers at the station to sell to that are "reasonable" I sell the loot myself at the station. I hold anything selling for 100k or more to ship to Jita or another trade hub in an attempt to get better prices. I sell all my salvage at large trade hubs when I've filled up my trade can's with salvage and higher value loot.
At times I do reprocess low value loot when I need to make ammo, as I like making my own ammo.

What about assault ships or heavy assault ships?
in particlar the Jaguar, the Wolf, the Vagabond or the Munin for level 3's?

A munin is overkill for lvl 3s but look at the price/skills required. I fly a t2 fitted munin or ishtar in lvl3s easiily but I m at over 60 mil sp (gunnery/drones maxed)

I bought my Hurricane & Cyclone with Salvaging money. Mostly those Tritanium Bars, that seem to drop more on level1 missions than level2 ones for me.

LOL!
I started salvaging when I reached level 2 missions... maybe I should head back into L1's and get some Trit bars! God knows Trit rarely drops in L2s fo me.
I only see 1 or 2 Trit bars every 5 to 16 missions.
Ok so what I've gathered is that L3's = Hurricane for me... Before that I need to figure out why Salvaging isn't netting me better rewards.
Thanks for all the help

If you are still in minmatar space check out ratting in the .6 and .5 systems. When I first started EVE 5 months ago I did more rattting and had alloyed tritanium bars drop as many as 3 in one group of 4 rats 2 or 3 times. I averaged probably 1 tit bar per belt for about 2 weeks. Payed for all my advanced learning skills. This could have been nerfed, since I have been in Amarr space eating up some melted capacitor consoles So hit up the belt brother and rat away.
Fly Safe,

Edited by: Alz Shado on 05/02/2008 20:06:49 Until you get the hang of the harder missions, raise your skills up a bit, and get some nice kit on your fittings, here's a good rule of thumb:
lv1: Destroyer (Thrasher for Minmatar) - 200mm Autocannons. Light Drones if you can afford them.
lv2: Cruiser (Stabber to Rupture) - Fit a mix of 650mm Artillery or 425mm Autocannons for bigger ships, Small Missile Launchers and Light Drones for frigs.
lv3: Battlecruiser (Cyclone to Hurricane) - Mix 650mm Arties and Heavy missiles, mix of small and med drones for the frigates
lv4: Battleship (Tempest to Maelstrom, with teammates at first then solo much later) - 1200mms Arties or 800mms Autocannons, Cruise missiles for the empty high slots, Heavy and Medium drones for the frigs and cruisers.
Also remember to fit for your ships bonuses if possible, and to check EveInfo for mission specific ammo/hardeners.

Hurricane
650mms artillery x6 and missile launchers x2 (of your choice)
Cap rechargers x3 and a 10MW AB
Active hardeners rat specific x3, damage control, plate and a MAR.
Light drones for the frigates.
Job done. It is not worth the effort in a cruiser and I would say almost impossible using AC's.
Income from missions is exponential as you go up the levels, so yes 30 million is a lot now but it won't be in the not to distant future.

Edited by: Falka Lakadaka on 06/02/2008 09:58:18 A couple of points (edit - it started as a couple):
1) Salvaging Level 3 is fine. Extra levels won't increase the yield, it there's stuff to be salvaged, you can get it with level 3. Level 4 and 5 will only reduce the amount of time it takes (very good skills if you're in low-sec, or in a hurry, but you can spend your training time more wisely at this stage).
2) You can usually make your investment in a BC back in about 10-12 missions at level 3. But don't rush directly to Level 3, do a bunch of Level 2's in your BC to make sure you're flying it OK. This will also increase your ISK/hour rate as you'll breeze through them a lot quicker.
3) Once you get yourself up to speed on Level 3s, 30 million won't seem so bad. Shop around though - you might be able to save 10% on a BC.
4) Go to the link in my signature. Find the tanking guide. For a BC, this is mandatory reading.
5) Your selling strategy sounds very similar to mine. The only thing I would do is "save" up the modules that sell for less than 100K. When you get 5 items at 50K each, put up a sell order for all 5 (so you don't waste your sell orders).
Cheers Falka

Yep... Doing level 3's in a Battle Cruiser can be like doing level 1's in a Destroyer.
One word of warning though.
Do not bother with the 6th Bonus Room in the Extravaganza Mission unless you have a friend with you. Sure you might be able to do it by yourself, but its realy not worth it in rewards vs risk/agravation.
