Edited by: ShopperDuck ChopperRock on 05/02/2008 21:29:32 I was wondering which ship is the best for a solotrip to 0.0.
I need something to be able to tank a trible bs-spawn, and yet fast/agile enough to travel tru 0.0 without the big risk of getting ganked. (all ships can be caught, i know)
Is it a recon or hac or ? what is the best solo-trip-to-0.0-ship?

You need a ship that can dish out good DPS, tank damage from two or three battleships and their escorts (faction-specific tanking usually preferred), and that can align for warp fairly quickly (ideally).
Any T1 Battlecruiser or better can be fitted to do this relatively well, and probably a good number of T2 cruisers. I assume the Deimos was suggested because drones + guns = passable DPS, and Deimos has a solid tank. Plus, it's fast and aligns fast compared to bigger ships.
Open up EFT and try a bunch of stuff, do some ship setups research, find some ratting guides (perhaps someone has the link to that).

Deimos can do all that + dish out a hell of a lot of damage, especialy against guritstas and serpentis rats.

First explore a bit with HAC or battlecruiser (which can be insured pretty well). When you get known with 0.0 stuff, get alt or friend scouting your battleship in some nice place where you can either cloak in safespot or dock in NPC station like in Delve 0.0 (good rats there) or Stain 0.0 (best rats there) or Curse (ok rats there) etc. Sometimes you can also buy a battleship somewhere. Also command ships (absolution, damnation, nighthawk, astarte) are pretty cool for ratting if you can afford one.

I love my ratting Dominix... simply because it is the drone machine.
I am able to perma-run my tank while my fighters take care of the rats... rats of any size, might I add.
Highs: 2x NOS 1x 425mm Rail (for getting aggro) Drone Link Augmentor Tractor and salvager
Meds: 100mn AB Target Painter (helps drone damage.... really!) 2x Cap Rechargers Drone Navigation Computer (speed boost for drones)
Lows: Large Armor Rep Medium Armor Rep "xxx" Armor Hardner (active) "yyy" Armor Hardner (active) Damage Control Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Capacitor Power Relay
You can fit rigs for armor rep or salvage help if you want...
I perma run my medium... only occasionally pulsing the large. With the Dominix's drone bonus, you only need to carry 100 rounds for the occasional railgun shot.
Remember, keep a repper drone or 2 to rep any drones that may take damage.

For Angels, I found the Sac to be perfect. Shieldtanked with a Domination med booster and just one T2 Invul (other meds were MWD and I forgot what), it could tank triple Seras (and of course any lesser spawns) and dish out 500+ dps, while also being pretty fast in aligning (even had a spare low for an istab I think) and having a huge cargohold for ammo and the occasional good loot item.

DRAKE DRAKE DRAKE DRAKE DRAKE DRAKE Low cost to buy and fit compared to battleships. Good DPS especially with some BCU IIs. Excellent tank. Battleships won't hit you for full damage and you can outpace the battleships you do encounter, and hit them from beyond their optimal range. Even though Caldari ships handle worse than anyone else's, the Drake is still more maneuverable than a battleship.

Assault Frigs are fine except when you consider the cargo size compared to ammo necessary. If you're based out of a npc station or a couple of jumps from empire that's hardly an issue. Enyo for the win. |

i've always liked the drake, with decent BC skills the drake has an awesome tank.
I've got mine at 68% resists minimum and 17k of shields and with T2 hvy missile launchers its only ever a matter of time. pack a 5 pack of light drones to take care of the frigs.

Hmmm well from what I have seen the Raven seems to be one of the most popular ships for ratting in, in both empire space and in 0.0.
I am a minmatar pilot so am not exactly sure why a lot of people like the Raven but at a guess it is because it is able to pack decent DPS, it has reasonable sized drone bay and can armor tank reasonably well with the right skills.
I don't fly one but have heard that they aren't too bad with manuvering and can allign reasonably fast enough.
they aren't that expensive unless you want to go the way of a CNR and have a fair sized cargo hold (although these mods that now take up 100 units of space are a bit of a pain in the rear )
As for BC's I have heard that the Drake is a good ship as it can carry quite a few missile launchers and can also armor tank reasonably well. Really it is a scaled down version of a Raven only it can move much quicker and can be much more deadly when used by a pilot that has good skills. The Drake would have to be close to the best BC available out of all the BC's and I would dare to guess that it would be one of if not the best DPS machine available.

Point 1.... Use the gun to grab aggro, so you don't have to wait ages for the entire spawn to aggro you instead of popping your drones. If you REALLY don't want to fit a gun, fit a medium armor repper to heal any drone armor damage.
Point 2... rats only deal 2 damage types... ditch the 1 EAMN II and the plate in favour of 2 type-specific hardeners (Guristas shoot kin and therm, Blood Raiders shoot EM and Therm, etc).
Point 3... a plate is not like a shield extender. If you cannot be stable with 7k armor... you won't be stable with 10k armor.
Point 4... The setup I posted above works for regular ratting, cosmic anomolies, complexes and solo level 4 missions. It may not be the prototypical Domi setup... but I've been flying that same setup for over 2 years, and I've never lost a Domi to regular, complex or mission rats. Other Pilots who jump in and pop me when ratting, sure... but never to rats.

its been my experience that usually any hac is faster to rat with then a BS of that race. Uusally speed getting to the ships/wreck looting salvaging etc is much faster. They have comparable tanks to the BS's when specific damage is tanked. They tend to use alot of ammo though which can be a pain if u dont have a station near by. Other then a hac a domi or rave would be the fastest i would say. Maybe a siege typhoon with MWD but i havent flown one in a while -------------------------------------------------- It is not what u are underneath, but what you do that defines you |

deimos, ishtar, drake, raven, dommy, most AF's
deimos = DPS, Tank, room for salvager/tractorbeam/cloak, con = uses lots of ammo ishtar = drones kick ass, highest for anything you want, you don't even need to be tanked (can use speed too), con = drones dieing in 0.0 = fail. drake = BC sized, tank, dps, room for other stuff up high, con = not very maneuverable, somewhat ammo dependent. raven = what else is there to say? dommy = no ammo needed, lots of room for any type of setup (you can rat in pvp setup), don't lose your drones. AF's= might have trouble with faction spawns and ammo usage.

Vagabond? Plows through more ammo than the deimos, will do less damage, and wont tank as well. If you use a vagabond for ratting its because you REALLY enjoy flying the ship, not because you want to make money fast.

If all our wanting to do is rat in 0.0 without gatecamp issues then train for a Pilgrim.
High: 3x heavy pulse 1x cov ops cloak. Drop a pulse for a salvager if desired. Med: 1x 10nm mwd 1x Invul field 1x drone speed mod 2x large extender Low: 3x heatsink 2x pds Drone: 10x med rat specific 10x warrior II Rig: Not really needed but if you want go for some resist thats effective vs your rats of choice.
No ammo needed tanks triple bs spawns nicely as long as you pop the support first and kills even the toughest bs quickly if your drone skills are top notch. Plus if you know how then even bubbled gates with drone spamming mwd cruisers and intys won't stop you from getting to the next system. Ask the guys out in the branch/venal area how hard it is to catch my Pilgrims. ^^

I'm will hazard a guess and say that you want to squat in someones back yard and encounter as few of the local residents as possible while making yourself filthy rich. If this is correct you want something that does not use ammo and isn't made of nerf. Drone ships and most Amarr ships satisfy both conditions. Knock yourself out.
The cheque will be in the mail.

Personnally I use an af usually an enyo or a retribution, the dps is a little low and you really need to manage you transversals and keep your speed up but it can easily kill a triple 1.5, and with skill a tripple 1.8, just don't go after the low value cruiser and dessy spawn, cus they'll rip you a new one.
Oh and when you are working on a 1.5+ it takes so long to kill them that it starts chaining nicely
The real benefit though is the ease of running and hiding from enemys and also if you do get caught your only down 10-20mil

Point of ratting in battleship is that they kill rats a lot faster, less time spend on killing equals to more isk generated in hour. Now if you want to have even half decent armor tank on raven you cannot fit ballistic control units. You want to have at least 2 of them to make any decent damage with cruise missiles. On the other hand you can use damage rigs, but then you have to use mids for capacitor, because you don't want to bother carrying cap boosters.

So you basically want to:
1)Maximize damage so you make more money (This would imply battleship, and remove frigs) 2)Have enough of a tank for the rats (This kills all T1 ships but BS and BC) 3)Be mobile so you don't get killed by a lone ship and are able to escape from a gang 4)Have a reasonable cargo space for loot 5)Have at least reasonable ammo capacity so you don't go back and forth all the time
Scratch Frigs, destroyers, inties, dictors, logistics and indies as they don't satisft anything but 3 and sometimes 5
Battleships and capships would be good but scratch these because they don' satisfy 3
Recons and HIC's generally do less damage than HACS (not satisfying 1) while the EW and the disruption capability are not needed for your purpose.
That leaves us with Assault ships, Battlecruisers, Hacs and Command ships
Fleet command ships tank more than you need and shoot less than you need, so it's down to Assault ships, Battlecruisers, Hacs and Field Command ships
At that point, assault ships should be avoided because of 1 and 4 (damage could be better, cargo could be better, although speed is nice) and they may get into problems when a commander is followed by too many small escorts.
So it's BC, HAC or Command ship. Scratch the Minmatar ships because they either have more range than you need, or less damage than you would like.
So, at that point, if you can fly a gunship that does the correct damage type, go for that. For Guristas/Serpentis, Deimos and Beagle are first choice, leaning towards deimos. Brutix can work as well but has no inherent advantage to the other two. For Sansha/Blood raiders, the Harbinger, Zealot and Absolution are fine. If you don't fly a gunship with the correct damage type for the rats you hunt, use one of Ceberus, Nighthawk, Drake, Sacrilege, Myrmidon, Ishtar, Astarte.
Good enough? The strongest choice is of course command ships, but they are the most expensive too. I feel that a HAC must be your best choice. But really, all of these would work. -----sig-----

Best ship for ratting is generally the ship with most effective DPS against the rats you are after. And if you want to loot, nothing will beat a marauder, although it will be expensive to be ganked.
For gurista/serpenties 0.0, I really liked the Deimos though (the deimos after the change wont be as good). It had good DPS, good tank and good speed with an mwd, and when the rat was dead you where almost in loot range.
One thing to consider when ratting is align and warp speed. Often you spend more than half your time warping around, which means a ship faster to align and faster to warp will be preferable.

If we are talking about all-out ratting ship, which works well against every type of rats ships like Ishtar, nighthawk and dominix are at the bottom, to be hounest.

I'm going to assume none of you have ever ratted in a Marauder. Warp, shoot, loot. Don't even bother moving. A bit slow on the warps as with any BS, though.
Looks pretty on a lossmail, too.

There is no need in 'most effective DPS' if you spend more time on aligning/warping between belts, approaching the rats and wrecks.

This. And taking into account the max velocity of heavy drones, which dominix is using its probably the worst ratting ship... Ishtar has the same problem, but it alignes and warps a lot faster, so it a bit better. The nighthawk have the problem of defenders, cuz there are quite a few rat battleships which use them.
Don't forget that ratting in 0.0 is dangerous and when the enemy ceptor jumps in you should get out of the belts realy fast. I personaly love the neutron mega. It has so much brutal DPS that doesn't need much of a tank, it just vaporaizes battleships. But there is still the approach/align problem.
So its very hard to tell which ship is best for 0.0 ratting. Every one of the has pros and cons. Instead may be the deimos

In Ishtar case the drone travel time is neglectible if properly fitted. You spend time only to initially approach the rats (fast with MWD or even AB), start dpsing with blasters until you have full aggro, launch drones to unleash the full firepower. Works wonders.

Blaster mega is no no variant for ratting. It has like 1km/s speed with MWD and very slow on accelerating. Rail mega with sentry drones might work, but you will need 2nd account to loot/salvage wrecks and besides rail dominix with rig for sentry drones and t2 sentry drones will most likely outdps such megathron.

Orbiting with a burner and the right low slot mods still keeps you well above 1200 m/s (it's been about two months since I last did this so I forget the exact speed.)
For ratting Sanshas, a Munnin is better then a Vagabond.
With my skills (t2 guns, l4/5 related), a Munnin set up for ratting does 381 DPS. This is w/ 5x 425 ACs, 2 Gyros, armor tanked with the 2 other high slots used for tractor and salvager. A Vaga w/ 3 Gyros and 5x 220 ACs does 376 DPS. This doesnt allow for both a tractor and salvager though. If I was ratting Bloods which like to nos though, I'd runn a passive LSE tanked Vaga over a Munnin.
But a Typhoon works better then either hacs. Using 4x Dual 650s, Arb Seige, and 5x Ogres, your doing over 600 DPS (1 Gryo, 1 BCU).
As to ammo, if you buy a EMP M bpo, wreck loot will keep give you plenty of minerals for ammo. --------------- This sig has been censored in fear of recieving the ban hammer... |

I perma run my medium... only occasionally pulsing the large. With the Dominix's drone bonus, you only need to carry 100 rounds for the occasional railgun shot.
Remember, keep a repper drone or 2 to rep any drones that may take damage.

Fixed. Can prolly perma run the lar. If not swap the extra mag stab for a cap power rely.
This will rat and salvage quicker(cause of more guns and the mag stab n the mwd to get to wrecks quicker than your setup soooo therefore it is better.

Almost every ship and *guide* I've seen recommended so far in this thread is a quick way to get you killed in hostile 0.0 and give the aggressors some decent loots. But then again I'm going to assume thats the posters intentions.

Ishtar
highs for salvage and such
can be made to tank well and still be very agile
has enough DPS to kill any rat spawn easy just with drones.

That's and interesting thought.
But then again, even those "aggressors" needed to start somewhere . . .
I certainly hope pirates in EVE don't use the forums to go trolling for victims (as in: easy noob prey.)

If you aren't stupid and pay attention you won't get killed even in a slow BS. Unless you are very unlucky and someone who jump into system warps right on top of you immediatly which happens not that often, least to say.

Considering this is a thread about ratting ships, I'm not sure what you're on about. Ratting (as with missions) is intrinsically risky in a hostile environment, and most fits that are well suited to ratting simply don't cope well with PvP. Your main goals for a ratter are: kill the rats as quickly as possible, get safe as quickly as possible. The best way to achieve both is to be able to kill rats at any range and to be able to stay stationary (moderate warp) or aligned (instant warp). A third goal if you're into it is to loot/salvage as quickly as possible (in Drone regions this is a must since your loot is your pay day).
Some of the fits suggested in this thread fit these goals... Some don't. But suggesting that they're all attempts at getting cheap kills is disingenuous.
For being able to also travel around safely (and I'm kinda contradicting the above paragraphs), a nano-Ishtar is the best ratter hands down since it's fast and fit for PvP. The only downside is that Guristas rats and their 5,000km range missiles will still cause you grief - but other turret based rats will cry as you orbit them at high speed while your drones *****them.

armageddon, tachs, cloak, wcs x 5, mwd, medium armour rep - the rest cap rechargers.
that will get u in and out, and do the job nicely.
and its cheap.

I personally rat in a Domi. It's slow and I'm lazy, so typically I just align to a SS and drop sentry drones or heavies if the rats spawn nearby. If there is a chance that you will run into hostiles, ALWAYS make sure that you have a heavy neut, a large smartbomb, and a set of ECM drones if possible.
Neut will help scare off nanos/intys, smartbomb will clear up drones, and ECM drones can break a lock just long enough for you to escape. I've lost enough Domis to realize how important this rule is.

Vexor. Quite agile and can kill stuff. Killing takes some time and those webbing frig/cruiser supports can ruin your day, but it still gets the job done. With under 10mil price tag.

It's funny... I made my 1st trip to 0.0 not too long ago, and I chose a Condor for this. There was a huge gate camp with a dictor among them, but they just let me get out of the "vortex" and continue on my merry way. Meanwhile, another ship that jumped in right next to me got trapped, and he kept screaming in local for someone to save him. No one even touched me. I still cant understand why. I could have had implants or an expencive item on board..

I need something to be able to tank a trible bs-spawn, and yet fast/agile enough to travel tru 0.0 without the big risk of getting ganked. (all ships can be caught, i know)
Is it a recon or hac or ? what is the best solo-trip-to-0.0-ship?
in my opinion, a battleship is out of the question because you will probably lose it by the time you get to your system. it takes too long to align after jumping in. HAC is a slightly better option.
if you dont have the skills for the HAC, i recommend a T2 Ishkur. gets through battleships spawns really fast. if not ishkur, then T2 fitted rax, which isnt as mobile.
