Originally by: Lowa Tabs are good as well as (no) brackets but the EW thing is "WTF you want that for?!" And isnt there already notification on who's doing what today? At least for the EW stuff. Wanting to know who is scrambling you could be great but imo its just another step towards making EVE run in easy-mode.
**** you.
Current notifications about EW effects applied to ones ship are barely workable: the timers are inaccurate, effect descriptions are vague and scrambling only gets quick notification in the 'damage' box that is all too easily missed in the heat of battle.
This design improvement will give players a clear overview of what is going on to their ship in a combat situation and if that is not good I do not what what is. Having this information is important.
If your tactics rely heavily on bad UI design of the past now is the time to review them.

This == very good idea. The constant overview shuffling has forced me to select and then click the 'Lock' icon just to make sure I'm locking the intended target.

Judging from how deep in armor you are there your ship is totally enjoying the new base resists...
Anyway great job on the overview stuff, allthough the overview is getting mighty big. - - -

Finally an excellent idea - not another unwanted nerf but something to actually aid players. I love the e-war notification icons but the screen garbage filter sounds like a life saver. I hope this will be implemented in a way that it will actually reduce amount of information transferred between client and server and reduce battle lag, although removal of this crap out of rendering loop will be an excellent improvement too.
Now if you could only add overview updates as a separate process so warping to a battle site won't create a lag spike and lots of people would send you a lot of love mails. Please! -- "Say yes to pron on Concord billboards" campaing. Eve mercenaries portal: http://www.eve-mercs.com |

Hi Tux, good to see you posting blogs which don't get slated to hell and back!!!
Anyways, I like the ideas a hell of a lot, will be good to see them come in as soon as possible (any ideas on when that is?) but wonder if it could be linked to another way of adapting the 'brackets' thing.
Could there be a way of not loading ship graphics (the actual graphics of the ship) but to only load the brackets/icon you'd be interested in, as an option. Maybe if this was a toggle-able option then when pilots are entering into potentially laggy fights, they could reduce the time spent loading a screen by only having the 'positions/brackets' of the other objects in space (ships, warp bubbles etc) marked and not the actual ships themselves. Would this diminish the load times and increase fps?
Call it a 'graphics-lite' option for fleet battles, used where most people zoom out and are not interested in the ships themselves anyway, just who to lock and fire upon.

So it will be even easier to find and kill those of us who use EW ships meaning they're even less likely to be of any use at all?

Great job . Next thing i would like to have is the gang mate icon next to targeted ship. Happens often that we need to target corpmate to assist with reppers. As the pictures sometimes show same ship like enemies it happens he gets shot . With an icon that wouldn't happen.

Use it against them, scorp with only one ECM and a massive tank comes to mind.

all of these changes look really good, but there are a few things you might consider checking on as well:
o) whenever the overview has to update a wreck icon with new information* the whole of the UI locks down for a second or two, during which time you can't do anything. * when you look at the icon it darkens, and when you loot the wreck it goes from full triangle to an empty triangle.
o) if you lose a target while having the UI hidden with ctrl-tab (either the target blows up, or it moves out of targeting range), once you show the UI again, the targeting-frame will have been moved to the upper-left and locked there, showing any targets you have left vertically.

Very nice improvement Tuxford.
I like the idea about the Ewar status shown in the overview. But I have one question, do you keep the current status bar that show when you are jamming someone ? This timer is very useful to know when your jamming will end, I really hope you won't remove it, that doesn't make sense :/ An icon wouldn't be able to give this kind of information.
Best regards

I shouldnt post when its late and Im tired. I look like a whiny old lady.
Im curious to one thing though, i have had more than one person say that the message of whos jamming you/trying to is only flashing for a second on screen.
Has it been that long since I got jammed coz I could have sworn that there is a little timer-bar that is counting down on my screen with the name of the jammer attached to it?
The drones on the other hand doesnt show at all, that is anoying as ****! :D
I agree that warpscrambler messages are not visible very long, blink of an eye, and should perhaps need some more way of displaying that but then again I feel I'm back at my original claim of it wont matter if you have 10 guys on you, you are dead anyway.
Edit: and FU too Victor.

While you guys are messing about with the overviews, is there any chance we could add in delimiters to the overview window to allow us to compartmentalise it. for example, to display gates in a special section at the bottom of the overview, while having all hostiles in a different section at the top.
or even just allow us to drag off multiple tabs into new concurrent overviews. (pretty much the same thing but with new and exciting software limitations). |

Great news!
Now you only need to decouple the whole UI from the graphics engine and optimize the overall client performance and we're all set.

I am very pleased with the new changes. I was very tiring to have a dozen targets around you and not really know who was the one scrambling or webbing you for sure. Now we can and that is a huge step in the right direction. Good job CCP!

Yes, this would be nice. For instance, sorting by name puts stargates at random locations in the list. It would be nice it they could be sorted by type, then sub-sorted by alpabetical/distance, so you have:
<stargates> 1au 3au 36au </stargates>
<stations> 2au 4au 48au </stations>
<ships> Alan Boris Dave Spaceship Pilot 10101010 xXxDeAtHbRiNgErxXx </ships>
etc...
Another thing - allow us to remove neutrals without removing gates/stations etc. Pretty please?

Edited by: Zarch AlDain on 07/02/2008 14:54:35 One more request, it might be slightly off topic but something that would be really REALLY REALLY useful is the ability to remove unpiloted ships from scan results.
Currently trying to scan someone down when there is a POS in system is a nightmare because you keep getting scan results on the ships inside the POS.
Edit to add: Just mentioning this because you tick 'use overview settings' on the scan window...

First off, I think these changes are awesome...but...
As I run missions, have a "Clear" setting that only shows the Rats, none of the buildings or other extra stuff spawned for the mission area, I do this because there are several missions with so many items that it can take a while for it to load, and depending on the mission that can be a real issue.
I understand that the server is sending all those items to the client, the client knows and tracks them all, but I find the load time is vastly different at warp in with the extra items being tracked in the overview.
If I have several tabs set up, will I have to wait for all of them populated or will the load lag be limited to just the selected tab (top tab)? --------*****-------- It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but it doesn't take any to just sit there with a dumb look on your face.

I was reading the blog for a specific feature and it took me the whole blog before reaching the last line with the only thing I was eager to hear:
"We've also wanted for some time to make the settings exportable and thats some of the things we'll be looking into later on."
You say "later on" but at least it's on your soon(tm)-to-be-done list. btw I hope we will be able to import the settings aswell (j/k)
Originally by: Liu Tuxford, while you are messing with overview, could you make it freeze while the "crtl" key is pressed so that we do not target something we do not want or end up warping to a station instead of a gate cause someone just entered your grid? pleeeeeeeeeease!!!!
That would be so nice ;) |
