Let us ignore the nonconsequential political side aspects of this issue, and focus on this fact: A man in the twilight of his life has run down a young girl in the dawn of her life. And all the man's wife has to say? "We're contacting our insurance."
Disgusting.
My proposal: After age 65, you must sign for your driver's license every year in the police station in front of a cop. The driver's license has in the US for too long been treated as a right, alongside the right to vote and the right to free speech. Far too many incapable elderly are operating motor vehicles. This must be stopped.

I would doubt anything is done about it soon. UK Insurance companies in particular seem to think that young people are the cause of all accidents, ever and charge through the roof to anyone under 21 - yet think that elderly people are fully capable of operating a vehicle until the day they die and thus they get extremely good deals

the city I live in has a 40%+ retiree population (vs everyone else, obviously)... the number of dangerous drivers over the age of 60 is really noticable on my commutes etc (I spend at least 3 hours in my car every workday). I fully support mandatory retesting for anyone over the age of 60 every year. Make it free for that group to eliminate economic concerns for the testees and I'm sure the roads will be MUCH safer.
It's not an issue of discrimination as common sense indicates that with age comes gradual disability. Failing to acknowledge this is simply ignoring the obvious; this problem will only become worse as the percentage of older people to the young becomes more pronounced via better health care, lower birthrates etc.
/signed
ps: I also support much tougher licensing requirements/training etc for all age groups behind a wheel, but that's another thread. Suffice it to say I am sick of nearly being injured or killed by incompetent drivers almost every day, no matter what age they are; cars are lethal weapons unless controlled by skilled drivers. It's about time governments recognized this.

It seems to be par for the course that doctors will certify doddery old people fit to drive.
I assume there's some rubber stamp retirees need, yes?
If there isn't let that be a lesson - it doesn't really prevent dead people operating motor vehicles.
The excuse for it where I live is that old people need to get around and to be fair the public transport situation here is not so good.
The other thing to consider I suppose is that old people vote :/ EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I have to agree, I spent a lot of time driving on motorways and dual carriageways, 50km per day to work and back on a motorbike, for 2 years, and I've seen quite a lot of elderly people do dangerous things, make bad decisions in bad weather and react slowly, and their insurance is probably extremely cheap, whereas people like myself who have been driving since i was 16, have to pay 2,200 euro for basic insurance on a cruiser, and was quoted 4,500 euro for a small car. /whine

My Uncle was killed few years back by some woman in her 80's in her pickup. Needless to say nothing happened to her and the only other 'witness'(who was unable to give a statement) was her in his 90's passanger.
Stories like this come out all the time, they need to test old drivers every few years, or at least reaction time/eyesight.

This is because elderly people tend to drive less (both in terms of time and distance) and stay off busy roads (eg, motorways). Younger people drive longer, faster and use busy roads. It's all about risk. Old people simply take less risks when driving and are therefore less of an insurance liability.

Yeh, cause driving around schools in big SUV's had nothing to do with it. I dont think the guy could actually see the girl even it she was standing 2 meters from the hood.

I agree the elderly should be required to meet much more stringent and regular testing to drive.
Unfortunately it will never happen. In the US the elderly are a large and powerful voting block and absolutely no politician will commit political suicide trying to force such a thing through.
Sad and demented but the way it is. I'll see if I can dig up some cites but IIRC drivers over age 70 were as dangerous drivers (statistically) as teenage males.

Sounds like the guy lost control of the car and would have rammed the school no matter what. Was just very bad luck for the little girl to be in the way. Whether he saw her or not I doubt would have changed anything.

If an insurance company thinks something, it's usually because they have strong statistics on their side. Either old people get into less accidents, or those accidents are less severe (and therefore, less payout). I suspect, too, that elderly drivers don't get into many accidents directly, but are an indirect cause of a lot of them (which makes no difference for insurance companies).

In the Uk they have already done a study, Old people cause more accidents per mile than young people.
Do you ever hear headlines of young people going the wrong way down a highway ?

strange. i just watched that old southpark episode about the seniors driving. strange coincidence.
some things i have to say: im pretty sure insurance companies dont think "that younger drivers are the problem but think elders are not". im pretty sure big insurance companies are big, heartless and cold calulators. and they know what they are doing. if it pays, the do it. simple as that.
anyways... what i wanted to say on the matter, actually, is the following.
where i live, people have to ride their car with ZERO alcohol in thefr blood for the first year (or was it two years) as will without ANY accidents. after this trial period you have to attend another test, and only then you will get a FULL license.
we all know, younger people have faster reactions and stuff, but i am(was 18 not too long ago) pretty convinved that most 18y olds arent really able to understand every consequence of the stuff theyre doing. im not saying thats wrong or anything.
but im pretty sure younger people tend to end up crashing stuff because of that.
elderly people on the other hand just crash their stuff because they cant see **** anymore or just to slow to react properly. again: not wrong. unless you pilot a 1500kg through unsuspecting citizens.
i seriously dont see why they just dont look at statistics, note the age at which accidents increase again, and then make people that hit that certain age come to tests every other year. if you start to lose your mental fitness, though luck, you can still ride an electric wheelchair.
really, no offense to the old farts. when im an old fart, i would expect them to check regularily if i still can drive.

Stats are never as cut-and-dried as you may think. Here is a report from the NHTSA (government) looking at the issue.
In some ways it is clear that elderly drivers are indeed more dangerous than young drivers. By other measures not so much. In terms of total accidents caused young people still account for a lot more than any other age group. When looked at as accidents/total miles driven elderly are nearly as bad as young people (but then they drive less overall).
Insurance companies will gleefully cost shift insurance premiums to other age groups. The elderly will act as a group and whine to their politicians and buy as a group. Insurance companies wanting their business will cost shift to some other group that does not act in a concerted fashion (e.g. young people).

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 07/02/2008 16:20:32 Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 07/02/2008 16:19:03 ok lemme put it differently.
the reason why these issues need to be adressed, is, for me:
its always really stupid crashes, that could have been avoided.
this woman that drove her car into the ocean. or that guy today that was to ****** to park.
thats so stupid. sure, younger people speeding, thats also very very stupid. but strangely enough i never read about them hitting children. mostly they do their illegal racing at night, where they can kill themselves or other adults but not innocent children that dont even speed with their tricycles.
elders tend to drive at times children are out in the streets.
anyways... how about we start to look at some statistics from a more medical point of view. ie. when do the chances for mental... impairedness (can you say that in english?) increase, have them checked. or the thing i said about the yearly checkup. (cars need a annual checkup over here, you know brakes and ****. why not the driver? how much can a good brake help the driver, if he is to baked to use it?)
i think im making sense here, but i dunno ;)

Being Dutch myself, some of this sounds familiar. Every car over 3 years old needs a yearly check up or you'll have to pay a considerable amount of money, everyone who's had there license for less than 5 years ( doesn't matter if you're 18 or 80) can lose it faster because of drinking, speeding, causing (severe)crashes.
The good part here is: everyone over the age of 65 or 70 needs to have his/her ability to drive tested every 5 years or less if the doctors think it's unwise to just let you drive for another 5 years. Situations like old people driving on the wrong side of the road or the story in the OP are precidely the thing these regulations were meant te prevent and I can't remember ever having heard about something like that happening here.

i dunno why, but i like not telling where im from. altough its hard to believe for me, we got it worse than the scandinavians AND germans ;) but still. those laws have been passed about... 5 years ago or something? things that changed back then were: with a new license you have to be one year without accidents or ANY alcohol while driving. not even after a small beer (whatever size that is in the netherlands :D). if any of either occurs you have to do your lessons again. no way around it. after that year you have your final test, which is rather short. i think you have a driving lesson, too. then, and only then you have a complete license.
the stuff you told about the netherlands sounds very reasonable. as always. the dutch are the only ones that can solve their problems... with sense and reasoning.
i really like that.

lol, old people. Ive seen some that have a hard enough time getting on a bus, I dread to think of 'em behind the wheel of some titanic american SUV. I have a hard enough time with one of those, and I got 'above average' reaction speed, good spatial awareness, and am reasonably fit.
Besides, once they retire, they're of no use to society anyway. Might as well drop them off in the middle of the woods without food or water. If they are still fit enough to find their way home, they can drive for another year or two.

On the topic of re-testing, it should be standard and mandatory for everyone every x number of years, i cycle 13+miles a day to work and back and the number of people who have side swiped me taking wrong turns or cut me up in an almost fatal fashion is a disgrace. Its not just the elderly

Erm, I don't know where you live but around here that only really accounts for 5-10% of young drivers - pretty much everyone else is mature enough to actually drive safely. Whilst that minority is most unfortunate (idiots/boyracers mostly) it hardly accounts for "all people under the age of 30"

Ok, this is one of the worse case scenarios. I have a feeling that his foot slipped off of the break, and onto the gas. They make it sound like he had to go some ways to hit that girl.
I know my ex's grandma would backup on a FREEWAY if she missed her exit. Granted, it was at night, but still not a smart thing. I've almost been run off the road I don't even know how many times by older people. I think most of them go with the motto of "I'm old, you should look for me. I shouldn't have to look for you." At least that's what her Grandma always said. As she slammed on the breaks to stop from hitting the person in front of her.
PvP don't have anything on riding with an old person.
