what is your favorite?
This has to be mine, i remember watching this when it first came out, my jaw dropped, and it still bring back memories of how great this game and its successor are
Other ones i would say, are the intro to Dune 2 (although it has not aged well) and Master of Orion 3 (which sucked but the intro was great), Battlefield Vietnam (flying around in a huey with nowhere to run nowhere to hide playing was awesomesauce and of course, fallout 1, 2 and tactics Notable mention goes to Nexus: the jupiter incident cutscences 1
Comedy mention to the intro for Lands of Lore with patrick steward as voice
and some funky music from Xenon 2 and killer instinct

To be more specific, it's the trailer that is cinematic and not gameplay and spells out Planescape: Torment. I've often seen it when installing BG II. ------------------------------------ You are now reading an important message. |

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 07/02/2008 15:17:11 ive seen a lot of intros in my time.. and i think i must say
Fallout 1
beats them all. No idea why, i think its the proper use of that fifties style. when you watch it, its like they had videogames in the fifties. unbelieveably weird feeling.
another great intro (maybe only for its time?) was Crusader: No Remorse (didnt like the second part as much). but iirc it was mostly filmed. still, i remember i loved it.
CoD4 deserves a mentioning too, imho the first mission on the ship counts as part of the intro, because they tried so nicely to integrate it into the starting credits and all.
pretty nifty if you ask me.
oh and ofc the eve intro. you can laugh, but i like paintings and text. the paintings are very good and so is the voice acting.
oh and MW4 intro loses. sorry. 1) the actors suck. which is a problem if you goin to real film it. also the swapping between film and render kinda hits you in the face with a baseball bat. 2) sigma sounds to much like smegma.

Edited by: Avery Fatwallet on 07/02/2008 17:00:51 i just watched the fallout intro on youtube again.
i noticed that i own two versions of fallout 1, the censored european one and the uncensored american one. (yeah yeah, back in the days... the land of the free...)
now while i normally think censored games are ****, in that case it IMPROVED the intro tbh.
at about 0:45 theres this guy being executed. in the censored version you have a cut before the first bullet hits, and this "were sorry, were having technical issues" screen, also in perfect 50ties style. imho that makes the whole intro more atmospheric. i dunno why, but i always liked that cut. maybe because the transition to the ad spots is smoother that way. or its just an extra layer of funny? irony? sarcasm?
rest of the game is A WHOLE lot better uncensored.

For sheer comedy and storytelling, you can't beat the Monkey Island series (sorry for the sound, was the best I could find in the time available). The intro to number three is especially good, once you get past the credits. Drops you nicely into the story.

on the subject of great intros, i wish with all my heart that Eve had a decent intro movie. something like the Evolution trailer, rather than a tedious slideshow.

are you mad?!
it's part of the 'thing'. you get a new game, you're all excited about playing it and carry it home clutched tightly in sweaty fists, excitedly flicking through the manual, all the while willing it to install faster as you switch repeatedly back and forth between the seven installation CDs, before you finally watch the intro movie, awestruck...
before you discover that your graphics drivers are out of date, it needs to be patched to version 1.0281.3b with a 4 gig download and it's actually an expansion pack for a game you don't own in the first place. Signature removed. Too large and flashing signatures are not really permitted. Navigator |

The song is "Legacy" by The Gone Jackals. If you can find it, the Bone to Pick album is a decent purchase, although it suffers from some sub-par sound engineering.
...what am I saying, "if" you can find it? The likes of Amazon Marketplace has made finding odd albums far too easy these days. One of the things I used to really look forward to on trips to the US was finding the used record stores and coming home with a metric shedload of albums that were great and almost impossible to get in Europe. Still like doing that, but the thrill is significantly reduced.
Anyway, back to the subject: This thread brought back memories of the Intros the c.racking crews used to slap onto the "releases of questionable legality" for the Amiga 500. I really got into those, to the point where I would get a copy of a game from someone because it had a really well made intro. So much more challenging than the ascii-art that the current generation of warez people pop into the archive file. But I guess people just aren't willing to accept the disruption to the game entering process anymore. I know I am somewhat miffed at the fact that to load up Crysis I have to skip seven logo animation/advertising screens.

i used to love those. bizzarely i was chatting to some guy who used to be in TSR on a random motorbike forum a while ago, apparently a lot of the old faces are still on the Demo scene (look on youtube and stuff!) but the *****ing scene is a pale shadow of what it used to be.
also, circumventing the word filters is a bannable offence. consider this a warning. ;P

God there is too many to list tbh how ever ppl have posted many winners here :
- Fallout series , even fallout tactics since it was at least decent graphics. - Starcraft was probably one of the first jaw droppings for me . - Diablo 2 with all its cut scenes , i mean geez those are even still amazing. - Independance wars part 1 , part 2 was a bit meh imo. - MYTH Series , last one MYTH The wolf age was one of the few games that gave me a back chill tbh , the story line was byound epic and the cut scences even the narrating was brilliant , music was A++. - Dawn of war and Warhammer Mark of chaos are the most recent ones i can recall. - War Hammer dark omen , very old game but its prob the grand dad of WH Mark of chaos. - War Craft II , my first ever strategy game always has a spechial place - RED Alert 1 , the rest were just like soap operas. - Emperor battle for dune , the sound track was also a keeper. - Imperium gallactica II . - Baldurs gate and ICE wind dale seriesand Never winter nights series are all epic and unmatched so far. - Mech caommander II - Dues Ex part 1 , best game EVAR 11111. - Home world , catclysm also , part 2 was mehhh , how ever the first home world will always be the master peice.
My top Fav which no one has mentioned yet will be Max Payne , omg this was like Sin city style game with a novel as a story line , god i loved that game soo much in both its parts.

Also LBA 2 for nostalgia and awesomeness.
I also still watch the EVE intro from time to time. (Yes, eve has an intro) ------------------------------------

Most great intros are already named, only adding: Echelon: Wind Warriors (couldn't find it on youtube, great intro) System Shock 2 Imperium Galactica 2 (couldn't find any proper videos. this is what I found, sadly, it has audio overwritten. good stuff nevertheless

Retrogasm!
I remember back in '97 when I bought a magazine that came with a demo CD and it had this FFVII trailer on it, the first footage ever that I saw and it filled me with incredible anticipation which was reward on christmas eve the same year (after weeks of secret drooling over the unpackaged gift in the closet). Oh man.
And I also remember this demo of an awesome puzzle game that I wanted but it wasn't available here. Recently I've wondered if I could get it now, but it turns out it's a rare one that goes for like a hundred bucks used.
One video that I remember but can't find pains me, though. I was in france in '97 or '98 and bought this magazine that came with a VHS tape that had Doom and Waterworld reviews in it, and it also had a Playstation advertisement which was a full music video with clips of various PS games and a soothing female vocal song in the background. I've always wanted to see it again. --- CEO

It's available from PS3 store for under $10(according to comments on that video).

X-Com terror from the deep, this was a great intro for its time.
An Full Throttle ofc a classic intro, and game, i read somewhere a few years back about Roy Conrad the actor who plays ben, he died of lung cancer in 2001 i think, dispite never having smoked, putting him as the role of ben was a masterpiece, he had the perfect voice for the part, I hope they never make full throttle 2 because it would probably never live up to its predecessor

Omg Imperium Galactica II, i loved that game and played it way to many times still have the cds for it but the solarian campaign one doesn't work
Curse you i'm going to have to reinstall and play it again now
EDIT: Bit off topic but was anyone else disappointed in the sequel to this game, i mean it's nothing like 2 but still palmed off as being it's successor somehow.
Closest ever came to finding a true sequel was Galactic Civ II very similar but turned base (only turned base game i've ever like to)
