There is a LOT of documentation on how they work and what they can do both in game and on this site. Try searching a bit.
In summary:
Carriers provide fighters for extra damage support.
They can carry a large ammount of Frigate and Cruiser class ships, OR a smaller number of Battlecruiser or Battleship class ships in their hold, as in-battle replacements or to help with moving ships around space quickly.
They generally get bonuses to remote armour/shield repairing or capacitor transfering to assist in fleet battles.
They also have corporate hangers and ship maintenance arrays to allow further logistics and in-space fitting of ships.
They cannot use jump bridges and cannot use clone vat bays.
But do not think from my description alone you can know everything. Search the forums and the eve site and find as much information as you can BEFORE even buying/building one.
Yes, i agree that you should let this random guy tell you how not to spend your isk. Do not under any cicumstances make your own decisions.

True, though personally I dont like to flame anybody even if they are asking stupid questions, sadly 95% of the people on the forums will disagree with me. This is what happens when a kestrel with thermal missiles declares war on earth |

If I were you I would not bother with the carrier and just fly a Rorqual or a Jump Freighter when the price comes down (BPCs will become 10 times more - where as now you get 1 bpc per invention, you will soon be able to get 10 - thats a big deal).
The Carrier is first and foremost a combat capital with logistics and fighter support - if you want to move stuff, jump frieghters are better.

Well done, you have contributed absolutely nothing to helping the guy. |

To the op, try it out on SISI, go to FD-MLJ, or join the channel MOVEME, play with your 100 isk carrier for a month or so, Fit it, lose it, buy another one for 100 isk, you'll get the idea.
And there are people on SISI that can answer your questions, but then without flaming.

Exectly. Inquiring for information about carriers immediately disqualifies you from ever being allowed to fly one. The only people who should use capital ships are the ones who didn't have to ask for the information - ie. those who one day at their breakfast table, munching happily on their donut, suddenly were divinely inspired with universal insight and understanding of all things by god himself.

Drachma Golea, I've seen the light thanks to you. I completely forgot about sisi. Last time I used sisi was when I was learning about POSes. Back then, nobody knew a lot and thanks to sisi I learned so much about the toy.
I shall go to sisi, try every possible fitting on the universe a possibly discover uber & unconventional tactics that the "use the search button"-crowd would never know about. Who knows, maybe I'll write a Thanatos guide or something.
many many thanks!

Originally by: Stakhanov It can solo level 5 missions. You can find a level 5 agent in Auga for example.
A carrier is also excellent to die in if you listen to advice like that
Seriously, for solo play or play in a small corp, a carrier isnt worth it. If you often relocate your corps assets it can be nice for transporting stuff, but thats about it.
Its not like level 5 yield more isk than level 4, and its only a matter of time before you get ganked if you do level 5 because they are all in lowsec.

No one cap ship (freighters exempt, doh) should be able to kill another one cap ship, provided both pilots know anything about how to fit and use them.
Simple facts: Every races carrier, dread and mothership can fit a 4-5k DPS tank with t2/mild faction gear. The max theoretical dps of carriers, dreads and moms is 1k/3k/2k respectively, racial deviations put aside.
this is not entirely true a moros can get over 7000dps with blasters and drones. I know this is not at all a practical setup but you did say theoretical dps. But for any practical setup this statement is true. 249.99 KM Locking? AF MK II |

Your question is wrong. Carriers very flexible, you can in most situations do whatever you please with one.
What do you want to use your carrier for? How does your corp/alliances deploy them?
