1) What improvements will there be to space ingame, will you do anything to remove, what some people call "the fishbowl effect", (IE: Space doesn't feel as vast and endless as it should, because of the skyboxes.)
2) Will there be any improvements to the scale in game, planets in particular.. Alot of people have been taking the game X3 as example to how they want the scale to be.

I'd love to hear about how a day of a conceptartist looks like, or how the typical approaches to projects are.
I guess you guys dont just only make illustrations, what are the most "boring" parts/projects?
Then, who does your Graphic Design, ie Print/Web/CI etc. Is that a own departement or are Conceptartists also responsible for that?
Are you guys at Reykjavik solely responsible for EVE or are you more of a Creative HQ?
What does it need to become a Concept Artist/Illustrator at CCP? (i know that this can be looked up at the job details, but what are the criterias?) Do you also take Interns?
i will think of more at lunch, need to work now.. :D

Art department?
I have just one thing I really wished for a long time : New planet graphics!
They always have been a bit buggy with the shadows and the textures are old... An not a single one (or I didn't search enough) looks like having oceans and clouds...
Any plans to improve planet graphics to have a ground texture and a over it have storms and clouds moving slowly, so they would never be the same day after day?
This kind of thing would improve space!
Ps : Live dev blog on valentine's day? Ever thought of players not attending because they have their first priority (second may be eve), girls, kicking them off the computer? That was just a thought on the date... -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

What could be more romantic than a date with the beautiful EVE?
Actually, I just want to take the oportunity to congradulate the art department on the awesome work done on Trinity, I am especially impressed with the use of mapping/shading on the new spaceship (and misc structure) models - my head spins just thinking about the whole unwrapping/painting process for the new textures.

Congratulations apart, I'm really exited to know when the new patch/upgrade graphics will be deployed. Some effects are actually "retro": explosions, missiles and missile related effects, the space itself.
And.. new hull ships, not kind of ships, but visually new ships. For ex: the assault ships are visually really like the frigates equivalent. I mean Finally: personalizing the logo of a ship? Eventually some colors? :-)
By the way, Trinity is awesome I am not your carpet ride, I am the sky.. |

ok, a few more questions :D
Will there ever be a artcontent related contest open for the playerbase to contribute directly to the awesome designed world of eve? (even a tiny one, ie a new shuttletype "civilian" ship or something XD)
How long is the usual process of creating a new ship/gun or any other item visible ingame? (visible; needs a 3d model) And how do the deadlines take influence to new content? Like, is there something that really was at the peak of awesomeness but just didnt make the deadline. Does that even happen?
Whats the main part of an CCP Artists work? Illustrations, Textures, Item-Icons or Modelling? How are those different workprocesses distributed on the artists? ie A ConceptArtist/Illustrator will probably have not much 3D Modelling experience, or are you guys all working in all those areas?

1) When will there be new planet and moon graphics?
2) Background graphics!! Are there any plans for a consistent univeral background?
That you have a model for the whole universe and that you see only parts of it depending on the place where you are. This means that you smoothly change the point of view from one solar system to the other and slowly move around in the universe. More drastical changes from constellation/regional jumps.
3) related to 2. Are there any plans to use procedural/fractal generation of an univeral background? To the artists: look at http://www.apophysis.org/ There are good formulas to create an universal background nebula.

I'm very impressed with the graphics in Eve and it is one of the features that makes the game so addictive!
But the internal station graphics seem very repetitive, at this point I think I have only seen around 5 variations on the inside of stations. Are there going to be more variations on the internal station graphics in the near future?

If planetary interaction is still alive and kicking is there anything going to be remodeled with this in mind, planets, moons and suns. There's stuff that could be shown to us pilots, stuff like clouds, auroras, cloud lightening, electrical storms on windy planets, moving cloud storm, jupiter like moving red spot (or different colors), meteorites moving into atmosphere, for a sun solar flares would be awesome and being hit by one and podded even cooler :-), geisers on iceplanets that leave plumes, vulcanos erupting with huge clouds forming, rings around planets where you can actually see the ice or roids moving and bump into them and many many more things I can think about that. Of course this would have to go hand in hand with some functionality we really really would love to see coming... soon (not 2010)

I second this, this was going to be my question.
When I see pictures of the Earth, they're amazing. When I fly next to a planet in Eve, it's usually like yep, there's another brown sphere.
Can we have planets that people will want to hang out next to, simply for the fact that they look so cool?

Quest. Eve is gorgeus, no questions or complaints - the only problem is that you hardly get to see it in pvp, as things appear so small or just as red or blue boxes, and while titans and caps are massive in videos (such as the latest brilliant one from dire) they look like pocketships in the real game. Is there a way or idea to work on this? -

Q1: The art direction in eve has always been exceptional, from the very first promotional images. It's allowed an entire universe to come to life, but, as yet, the planets are relatively character-less spheres in space.
if you had the chance, are there any worlds or settings in Eve that you, the artists, would like to explore? What do you see as being "down there", and how would you like to see it depicted someday?
Q2 There is a multitude of ships, many of which are loved and hated by the community for their appearance... are there any ships, 7 years after their first appearance which you'd have liked to be able to redesign completely during Trinity?
Q3 Will you relocate the studio to scotland and give us a job, please? ok, maybe not Q3

I don't know if you view this question as "related" to the art of EVE. It certainly isn't directly related, but nevertheless:
What kind of education do you, the people who work on the art's department possess? Did you graduate at an arts college/school?

I have a question or two.
Q1 Will you release a client with the ultra high resolution textures used in the Trinity video?
Q2 Any plans to fix the aliasing created with the current shadows, such as softshadows?
Q3 Displacement mapping? While normal mapping are a step in the right direction, do Trinity II support displacement mapping and if so will we see it as an option to switch on? Asteroids would look amazing.
Q4 Weapon effects, any plans to make it so we can see if weapons are hitting the shield, armor or structure?
Q5 Will the weapons aim a bit better and not hit various edges pointing out from the ships but the center?
Q6 Where are the promised logotypes on the ships?
Q7 Any work being done to optimise dual premium clients on the same PC without suffering from spectacular crashes?
Q8 Plans for more station interiors, and more specific any chance to get a premium version of the Pleasure Hub station?

Edited by: SpaceSlag on 13/02/2008 22:17:55 I think a lot of the response has to do with planets and more of background art for the engine. I agree. Anybody ever probe 84 moons in one system, go next door and probe 79, then go to next system and scan 92, then onward and upward? They all repeat the same set of graphics.
Q1: Will Planets have "live" atmosphere's/graphics? Large Volcano Planets: Lots of dark soot floating about - can see layers of atmosphere (toxic) Small Volcano Planets: Magma and explosion goes straight into space. Little to no atmosphere layers. Ringed planet. Water Planets: Atmosphere - Clouds Floating about? Occlusions of sun from clouds given right angle of sight. Terran Planets: Cloud atmosphere. Weather Storms periodically, etc. etc...
Planets with lots of asteroid fields around them (or small number to contrast planets with lots of them in same system) - ringed planet. Players could fly into the rings and navigate. (Possible effects team/dungeon team w/ this)
Different sized planets. For the love of the all-mighty Amarrian God, not all planets are the same size. Standard warp in distance to all planets and they should be different sizes. Some so big you think you're gonna burn in the atmosphere at standard warp-in point, while others are just a bit bigger than a moon.
Q2: Will moons have any other characteristics? Moons: Asteroid craters, possible live surroundings of moons where comets and free asteroids collide into the moons.
Q3: Some talk was said about comets entering into the game in several dev blogs past. Will they enter? Comet tails - different color based on the mineral(s) found in them. :-Possible dungeon team guys code in some pirate encounters for unlucky miners chasing those comets.
Q4: Inertia dampeners? Kind of goes with Q3, how do you keep up with a comet that orbits the sun and can change its orbit? Art for the gui on those?

Whilst I love the new texture looks that came with trinity, I still have one thing bugging me, that's been at me since I first tried EVE 3 years ago.....
Question: Do you ever intend to look into improving the background art of space itself? (No not lighting, the actual art itself) Areas that are masked by heavy lighting from stars and such are fine, but other areas are blocky, inconsistent and look like something you'd see in a mid 90's space game environment, and just destroys the look that trinity brought to EVE.

About space background...
Have you studdied the possibility to make the background looking like what we see in the solarsystem map? I mean, real star placement.
I want to be able to say to someone 'look this star, it's home'.
Also, the fact that the galaxy is kind of 'flat' while I can see stars all around is quite wrong. I know it should not be just the stars, when you're in good conditions (like from a space station on night), you can see more than stars, there are distant galaxies and such that could make a fixed backgroud that would be quite the same in all systems.
You made great work with trinity, now, we'll trust you for the planets and space background. -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

1- When can we see more art and renderings for Ambulation? After fanfest we have become thirsty for more eyecandy!
2- Dark non-nebula space in various regions. Has this ever been considered?
3- Sound, albeit not part of concept art, contributes a lot to the game. Will this ever get a revamp to match the beauty of the trinity upgrade?
4- Special effects? Will there be more added eventually? (afterburner/salvager/ship textures showing damage/asteroids disapearing)

I fear maybe guys there is a misunderstanding. I think "Art" is not 3D dev team. I think this is more about concept art, and design.
So here is a bunch of questions :
Q1 Can you describe us the Art team ? How many people ? What are differents jobs and tasks ? Who leads the team ?
Q2 Can you give us some references of inspiration ? Movies, Games, Comics, books...
Q3 What is you main projet right now ?
Q4 Did you check fan art, and does it affects you in any way in you current / futur work ?
Q5 how much hours of work and how much poeple is it to fully design a ship ? Let's take an exemple : a BS, from concept art to 3D finalized model?
Q6 a little thing you are the most proud of.
Q7 a little thing you would do totally differently today.
Q8 is there specifics team involved in each races ? Who the specific aspects of each races is handled in the art team ?
Q9 Don't you think flame burst and large mobile mechanic pieces on mining barges is a little bit... well... an easy pick design choice ? ;)
Thanks for your time guys and keep up the good work you're doin' well.

Hm.. Well mainly, I would wonder if:
1) there are going to be any plans for habitable moons e.g. with lights and large structures visible in the graphics? Given the vast number of moons and the law of averages, moons are more likely to be where the good stuff is at.
2) are there plans to have alliance/corp logos on ships, as that would be far more interesting than having customizable skins, in my view.
3) concerning ambulation: Will a person's learning implants and hardwiring be represented on their character model, and are there going to be accessories such as full cyber-limbs for us chrome-maniacs in Naqam?
4) what kind of beer does the art team have on tap in the office? --------------

Damn, I'm probably too late for my question, but here is something I always wanted to ask : The tech II ship design was, in the classic client, a tech I 3d model with a different texture and changes. Is it due to time problems (modeling new 3d models and retexturing them, vs making some small changes to the 3d model and retexture it) ?
As a minmatar, I like your 3d models, especially the new ships since 1-2 year. I would just love not to see tech 2 = tech 1 + new textures anymore... I think your 3d modeler and artistic should express themselves a little more in tech 2 ships, there is no new 3d model since a lot time now...
Good job anyway ! 2isk
