Well, make it Paul Atreides then. BackWATER world as in the Atreides homeworld, where water falls from the sky. Semi-religious order as in Fremen.
Lol, didn't even read clue 2...
but it still fits I guess, if you count Gurney Halleck as a smuggler in his later career.

No - the farm boy thing is a definate - no metaphors there.
Clue 4: At various times he is known by three names, the first given by his father, the second he gave himself, and the third (the one he is best known by) was given by the order he eventually joins. In this third role his is named after the founder of the order, because they have great hopes for him.
