Edited by: Darkii kior on 06/05/2004 18:16:28 Ok, so all who don't know the old quiz (run by Lomex) here are the rules of this one: thw winner of the round has the next round. You have one guess per clue posting. And those posting the clues, please check this more often to see if someone won your round. Thx
as to where you can take the ideas from: films, series, books thinking of games too, what do you think, would clues from sci-fi games work too?

Edited by: Lomex on 01/04/2004 11:26:28 Well I know you're a star wars fan but I can't think of a single serious racing injury. Ep1 was too cutesy to have a serious injury during the pod races, and I haven't read any of the books from that era (mitterchlorien drivel).
So now all I've left in my mind at the moment is that damn film with Estervez.
so my answer is Alex Furlong, played by Estervez in the film Freejack.
oh, and as you might have noticed, I'm still here. Don't worry I'm just winding down :D

That would have to be Dengar.
I suspect this has taken time since the lifestory of Dengar was only revealed in 1 book - Tales of the Bounty Hunters (and possibly on a collectable trading card). So while many players of EVE will have seen the Star Wars films, considerably less will have read the expanded SW universe books.

Close enough. The Lensmen series refers to lots of Lensmen, I was hoping for one in particular, but you've go the right series, and aren't far from the main character.
The correct answer is: Kimball Kinnison from E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series
The Lensman books are well worth reading, if only to get a historic perspective on Science Fiction. He's one of those authors, along with Asimov, Pohl, Blish, Niven, Banks and Gibson that I feel every Sci-fi fan should read at least a little of.
If you do read them though, read them in the orderthey were written, not the order they no seem to publish them in - i.e. Start with Galactic Patrol and work forwards. Triplanetary and First Lensman were written later as Prequels and work best if you are familiar with what comes after.

Its on my book shelf under - things to read. There are quit a few books in that category at the moment; as a matter of fact most of the books on shelves are in that category ( or the favourites category). Most books I've read have now been religated to waterproof plastic boxes in the attic. Hopefully some day I'll have enough shelf space to display everything. I've just finished reading Ender's Game (Swift's Recommendation), but I've got the other 3 books in the Ender saga to read (and then I'll probably read the Enders Shadow books). After that I was planning to read Utopia and Altered Carbon. There is also some Fredrick Phol I plan to read very soon since I've just reread Gateway and I've never read the sequels.
I was really dubious when I answered because all I know about the book is on the back cover. As a matter of fact I had to go to Amazon to check the name of the character. For some reason Google didn't occur to me.
Hmm.. just spoit my next question ... Ender is too obvious now that I've mentioned him.. will have to pick something else...
Okay, thinking about things I plan to reread reminded me of a particular series.
Question 13?, Clue 1: Wandering Jew
By the way - knowing that there is someone reading this trhread with the alias of Virgil Samms, I am now really annoyed I din't hold out for Kimball Kinnison. I can guarentee that Virgil would have got it. After all, Virgil was Kimball's great great grandfather, or at least direct line male ancestor.

I recommend it. But first you should read Valis, which is the first of three books in his theological "Exegesis", followed by The Divine Invasion and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer. They are not conventional sci-fi, but they raise a lot of interesting questions. PKD was a very original thinker, in my opinion.
Btw, I think I know where to find the answer for the question, as I think I have heard about the work in question, but I'm not going to google for the correct answer.

No - not Luke Skywalker.
Clue 2 - Ran away from home and befriended a Smuggler.

Edited by: Kakita Jalaan on 28/05/2004 10:17:37 Well, make it Paul Atreides then. BackWATER world as in the Atreides homeworld, where water falls from the sky. Semi-religious order as in Fremen.
Lol, didn't even read clue 2...
but it still fits I guess, if you count Gurney Halleck as a smuggler in his later career.

I have trouble fitting in the the "farm boy" part of the clue with Paul Atreides...
But I can't come up with a guess anyway.

Sorry about the delay in bringing the next clue. Since no-one has it right yet I'll go a little less cryptic:

Yeah, the farm boy thing doesn't fit. But everything else did so nicely that I hoped it was a metaphor for something

No - the farm boy thing is a definate - no metaphors there.
Clue 4: At various times he is known by three names, the first given by his father, the second he gave himself, and the third (the one he is best known by) was given by the order he eventually joins. In this third role his is named after the founder of the order, because they have great hopes for him.

So close - as a matter of fact 1/3 right, but not quite close enough. Based on that answer, I guess the last clue has to be:
Clue 5: Tutor, Mentor and Spiritual guide to Emile Antoon Khadaji "The man who never missed".

Can someone get this one?
MiloMorai has told you which series of books, and you could probably get the answer from any book in the series.
Cheers,

Yeah, Its Pen,
Otherwise known as Mwili (Given name which he abandoned when he fled home) or Ferret. His story is covered in detail in "The 97th Step" by Steve Perry, but he appears in most of the Matador series at some point (He doesn't actually appear in Matadora although Emile spends much of the book pretending to be him, and I dont think he appears in Brother Death but I may be wrong.)
I feel a bit guilt about this round, because MiloMorai came so close, actually listing the correct character as part of his answer, but still being clearly wrong.
Anyway Falbala, Your turn.

Not sure about the Union part - only person I can think of who was both Chief Scientist and Politician was:
Davros - The Kaled chief scientist, inventor of the Daleks (from Dr. Who)

Ariane Emory died in the beginning of the book but she had planned to clone herself and with the proper environment she managed to "clone" her mind too. She was at the head of the Union and also of Reseune, a research lab.
The book's title is Cyteen.
