My Steam popped up its usual advertisement window and offered me the pre-order of a little game called Audiosurf, due for release tomorrow. I was intrigued by the idea so I investigated further. Here's the description:
Quote: Ride your music.
Audiosurf is a music-adapting puzzle racer where you use your own music to create your own experience. The shape, the speed, and the mood of each ride is determined by the song you choose. You earn points for clustering together blocks of the same color on the highway, and compete with others on the internet for the high score on your favorite songs.
Audiosurf on Steam includes The Orange Box soundtrack, integrated with the game to enable "Still Alive" surfing and more. In addition, Audiosurf is one of the first titles to leverage the recently announced Steamworks, offering full support for the Steam Achievements that appear on Steam Community profile pages.
Play with any music from your own collection--the game supports MP3s, iTunes M4As, WMAs, CDs and OGGs Valve's The Orange Box Original Soundtrack is included. Online scoreboards for each song you play. Choose your strategy from 14 available characters. Track your progress as Steam Achievements.
There seems to be more and more of music games ranging from beatmania and DDR to Rockband and Guitar Hero, but the greatest limitation in all of them has been the lack of the ability to use your own music in them. Audiosurf is not like the aforementioned games; it's not about playing the song. It's an addicting casual game (it does have harder difficulties for virtuoses, of course) that enhances aural experience by making it an interactive audiovisual trip.
I of course wondered how well it worked with different kinds of music. I browsed youtube for some member videos from the beta that was available for a while (I did not learn of the game before yesterday, though), and here are three example videos. Briefly, however, the concept of the game (or the casual mode at least): avoid the grey blocks while collecting/hitting the coloured boxes. Very simple.
Enigma - Ameno Dragonforce - Through The Fire And Flames Pendulum - Blood Sugar
I think this might become wildly popular. I can't wait to get trippin' tomorrow. --- CEO

While that looks fun (ish), I don't see it being...
any good...
Like, theres no rhythm needed in collecting the blocks, just mad-speed reactions and 20/20 vision. Seems just random to me. 族---族

Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 14/02/2008 13:44:36 There's a free demo available of it from FilePlanet (providing you have a free account there that is)
On another note. Don't try Dune - Million Miles From Home on Ninja Mono Mode unless you're really good at this, my wrists still hurt. Damn that is fast...

You are right, it is not a game of rhythm or finger twitching prowess. But it doesn't have to be because there are plenty of games competing on that front. I see this game's strength in enhancing your music listening experience. Whatever music you want to listen, you can use in the game. There is a big difference in concentrating to a song and playing it on the background, and keeping you occupied with concentrating in the music is one clever trick by which games like these work. Another is the flow, the rollercoaster tunnel that syncs with beat and mesmerises with visual stimuli. This game needs nothing more than these simple elements to be worthwhile for hours of entertainment.
And of course it doesn't hurt that it's only 9$. So you don't have to compare it with full priced games for wallet worth. --- CEO

Im not comparing it to a $40 game, I'm saying that it doesn't look to be, as you said, "wildly popular".
I just don't think it will catch on. If I want to listen to music, I'll listen to music, not have all my concentration lapsed into dodging little grey barricades.
If I want to concentrate on music, I'll close my eyes. The grey barricades are a distraction from the music, not an enhancement. The rhythm-shifting 'highway' isn't going to make me focus on the music.
I'm not saying it's bad, infact I think it's quite impressive, but I don't think it will catch on in any big way.
I still love valve for letting anyone publish on steam for free. They are my new god 族---族

But the thing is, you don't. Or at least I don't. It takes an incentive in this era of all manner of virtual distractions to find time to concentrate solely on music. If I'm listening to music on my computer, the chances that I'll turn off the monitor(s) and stop multitasking like a madman are next to none.

From what I have seen and heard, it is already quite a sales hit. The low price and simple concept have attracted many like myself to loosen the purse strings for something interesting and innovative. Of course it has the limitations of any casual game, but casual games have a surprisingly big market (watch latest Zero Punctuation, too! ) --- CEO

Tried the beta. It's still around on my HD, working and everything. I played, perhaps, two hours of the game, then never opened it again.
Big problems: collecting the blocks has no rhythm to it. There is no groove to master. The latter levels have blocks combos that are simply next to impossible to dodge (try any techno song on Mono Ninja) and in the end, it's pretty much like playing a dodgan gaem with a song tacked on top.
To be honest, I'd much rather play Rez, where the levels are at least custom-tailored to each song and the satisfaction drawn from the experience is much, much more palpable.

Yup, I can't see myself actually paying for it. It looks fun and all but the sort of thing I'd pick up, play for a few hours and never touch again...

Oh I didn't read any scores, I literally just decided to try that song to see what it was like (turns out it's awesome ) then looked at my score at the end, saw 'mindstar', remembered that this song is used in a certain EVE trailer and concluded it was you
Coincidence?

As far as I can tell it should be available any minute now, anyone know different?
Also, what's the maximum length of track allowed? Some of my favourite songs are the extended rocky jamming sort of ones, normally near the end of albums, really hope I can play with them! - Sig follows:
Originally by: Micheal Dietrich Does it really take 3 minutes to show the same 5 scenes though?
