So how am I involved in the game? What's the point? I cancelled my subscription after 1/2 month simply because I am bored. Sure sure you can save up buy bigger ships, train skills yadda yadda but really... why? Is there even a story I can get involved in?

I can say yes. I don't think I can explain it to you. Eve has some aspect of instant gratification but first you must pay your dues. You must spend time to position yourself where you want to be. It ain't easy, someone will try to get there too, but if you want it... well you have to go get it.
So in 1/2 month... you are going to be nowhere you want to be. Plain fact. And if that is the measure of success for you then I can firmly say that Eve is not going to be fun for you.
Sorry... try again. I'm sure you can find something that is more to your taste. You might have to expend some effort looking for it though.

So, what is it you want to do in the game?
People create and destroy regional alliances and governments.
People become pirates and make their living that way.
People become mercenaries, or terrorists, or activists, or journalists, and do all of it in game.
Do you want to create your own corporation and lead it to greatness? Do you want to live a quiet life? Do you want to be a smuggler running blockades to make tremendous profits with routes you guard more closely than your life?
There is nothing stopping you from doing any of these things. They aren't game options, or anything that you'd normally see in a single-person game. You have to go out and interact with people and do things in order to achieve what you want.
What do you want to do?
There's no meaning to life when you cling only to common sense |

My sir, you are not the first to start such a topic. It comes up more often than you think. The fact that it comes up so often can indicate two things:
1 - There is simply a lot of idiots in the world with short attention spans.
or
2 - Yes, you made a valid point. This is one of Eve's biggest problems.
I have times where I agree with you. I fly around. Look at rocks. Earn money to buy a better ship so I can mine more rocks. So i can get a better ship to mine more rocks. I run bland courier missions for agents with no imagination. I kill yet another un-inventive soulless NPC in a grey asteroid belt. I experiment with PvP combat, which is at best a buggy, unresponsive and grossly imbalanced combat engine. Who has the most points and best hardware wins. Battleships are uncontested and all the other classes of vessels are obsolete, leaving a very bland and limited choice for PvP. Elitism. I try to involve myself with plots. But it often ends up cryptic and not accessible to the common man; only the elite players are selected to participate in small battles.
But 99% of the time I absolutely love the game. It has a slow pace but infinitely rewarding. If you are a fast twitch gamer try and get a subscription to an action game. There is nothing wrong with that. But try and give this game a fair chance. Picking a career and sticking to it, joining a corporation which agrees with your ideals, studying the tactics and technology. Combat is, believe it or not, a skillful trade. Its not just click, lock, destroy. A few crucial decisions and loadouts can make the difference between victory and loss. And yes, smaller ships can make a difference!
Hey, you are not crazy! But you gotta give eve a go.

With a week of gaming my assets number in 2-3M, I can get any frigate I want, or start a corp of my own and set out newbies. Lots of fun I think, of course it was all new when I was a real newbie... :-)
Well Eve has a background you can add to and exploit for roleplaying, but the team aspect is very strong. The corps and gangs are nice features, and PvP is an important aspect of Eve. Learn to appreciate the dynamic free markets. For some players it's just the sheer complexity of everything that gives the kicks, just look at the number of all trade items... The roles you can have are varied too, you can be a fighter or a manufacturer, or both.

Edited by: Jherek Cornelian on 01/04/2004 11:39:20 I've been playing nearly 2 months now. I really love this game but I really can't tell you why. People in my UT clan ask me about it and should they play it.
I say "I can give you a buddy trial but you probably won't like it"
they say "well you like it don't you ?"
I say "yes but I don't know if it will be your thing, it's a bit slow, not much happens, there is little or no skill in fighting, I don't know how to interact with the story"
they say "why do you play it then"
I say "no idea but I find it relaxing, it's just a nice little game"
and to people who don't like it.. don't play it, but don't flame that you don't like it, thats like me saying you shouldn't eat ice cream cos i don't like it
I'm used to fps games where everyone shouts "I ownz your ass you mf you do various nasty to your mother and or sister etc TEAMS !! you cheating blah blah yadda yadda"
In Eve I've been killed by people who then give me advise on how not to get killed. It's a game played by people who tend to want to have fun without trying to put everyone else down.
It's kinda like chess with guns and ships and mining and agent missions and pirates and alliances and a story... ok its not like chess

I think the beauty of eve lies within the community. no matter wht route you pick in eve, some sort of contact with the other players is needed to build freindships, alliances, enemies... no matter what you want to do in eve, contact and reputation is the way forward. even if your a solo player.

Yeah...I'm not an instant gratification nut by any means, but I have to know that there is a purpose to my taking the 300 reports here and kill 2 angels over here kind of blandness to everything.
How bout little tidbits of something (Anything!) to keep you saying "Cool! Look at that!". Like a really different agent mission once in a while to make you want to hang around to see if there's more...like an Easter Egg hunt. You find one thing...then you want to see if there's more... after a while find something else, then search for more.
I think as a beginner you would want to at least give the "hint" to the new players that there is something bigger and better out there and that you'd want to spend the time to get there. So far there's no hint, no explanation and no direction and I see that all the time in the corp channels.

Well, if you take the time to read tru all the Peek of the Weeks, and the Back STorys you'll know why your doing this for that. Get out and See some of the Points of Interest. Scout for Pirate Bases or Try and make it into 0.0 Space with out being killed if your looking for trills.
This Game HAS NO POINT which is why I play it. Why be limited with what you can do? No one is telling me I am stuck being a Miner or PvPer. I am not stuck in 1 Profession Path, or I can invent my own Profession.(Furry Turtle's any one?)
You can get involved with the Story Line. Look on The Scorp Forum here on this board for Events that Happen. you have to be fast to get there or in the right place.
2 weeks is laffable about at best, your not going to be the level 75 Uber Char in 2 weeks with this game my friend. go play some Leveling game for that. Hook up with a Good Corp or Make a Corp with other Newbes and explore the wide world.
You make your own Destiny in Eve.

Yes...I felt the same as you do when I first started playing about a month ago but I am giving it a fair chance and I have to say that I am starting to like it. I have also been playing those super leveling uber character games so if youre used to that then Eve will take some getting used to as well. But I am also tired of the same old missions of kill, kill, kill and level, level, level and then go kill some more. That also gets repetitive, so what have you got to lose?

This game sort of reminds me of the Harvest Moon series on the consoles: It's fun, though you dont know why, and you love it, but you dont know why you do. I've played alot of MMORPGs. Most of them are very much the same: Kill kill kill. Level. Kill kill kill. Rinse and repeat. It's nice to see a game that does something DIFFERENT. I was a BIG E&B fan. Loved that game. But then EA, being the worthless idiotic corporate morons that they are, killed it (heck, they never bothered to advertise it or try to get new people into it...). So I came over to EVE. Im finding this game to be alot of what I loved about E&B... endless exploration, you dont NEED to fight all the time, you can better your character in other ways, and of course the mystery and intrigue of flying through deep space, never knowing what will come next. Also, the fact that you dont need to spend every waking moment in-game to level your character is VERY nice. But it is still hard to explain why this game is good.

You are looking at the entire game through the isolated feature of the agent system. Its true, there is no game there. Do a mission, then 5 missions later do the same mission, you will get no where except to another lvl agent that gives more similar if not identical missions. But the agent mission system is not Eve the game, though thats no excuse to not improve it. ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. The majority of the long term players in Eve that I have met and had conversations with are adults.
I have 2 teenage kids myself and both love playing video games but they left the Eve universe after a few weeks because it didn't give them the immediate pulse raising action that their other games give them. They are so used to being able to beat a game in a week that the concept of playing a game like Eve is boring to them.
The first thing that I heard after they tried to do NPC hunting is "So all I do is shoot at these '+'s all day. This game sucks!"
They are so used to following the script in other games that they can't grasp the fact that you make your own script in Eve.
I love the game because I don't feel pressured to play every day if I don't want to. I can set a skill training and take a break knowing that I'm not falling (skill wise) behind my friends. Sure they may all be in battleships by the time I get back, but I'll have just as much fun flying around in my frigate or cruiser. I get to do whatever I want to do in the game at my own pace. That's what this game is all about.

Have to agree with a couple of points raised. Community and relaxation.
I do get tired with the stress levels of first person shooters and putting up with teenagers agressive on hormones.
Eve is that "nice little game" that you can always come back to. Sit back, talk to your mates. Do something constructive and enjoy the ride.

Ok, I am a noob and gonna try this game out as well and I really enjoy the teamwork and fellowship of working and playing with other players. Is this what a corp is all about? Like a clan or alleg? If so, how do you go about joining one or finding info on all the different corps in the game?

Good points raised by all. (Except the name hating some people have...hehe) I figure this game just isn't for me. Not so much the "action" and "excitement" factor, it's just my job is boring and monotenous (pays well though...so..) so when I go to unwind playing a computer game etc doing more of the same is just not my thing. Oh well. I gave it shot. Enjoy the game everyone. It's got many good features (beautiful graphics) but it just doesn't have quite enough story and character development for me (yes...I've read the little backstory things but it means nothing to me in the "here and now")
Thanks everyone. I'll be moving on.

There is a list of corporations somewhere but you can also look under corporations on these forums. Remember one thing everything on those forums is in game and biassed so somethings are true, completely false, rumors or just PR.

I think it's much like life sometimes there are just too many things to do and if someone isn't telling you what to do some people can't deal with that...which is fine you have to have followers in order to have leaders :), but yeah I understand why you don't like it, much like the reason I didn't enjoy some other games...minus the fact that there really were just some games where you finally did everything and it really was all because pvp was just dumb. At least here PvP actually serves a purpose in a guild war and pirating as in other games PvP is more like you die and then you respawn...not to mention getting killed only took 2-3 seconds by someone standing miles away...not a big fan of MMORPG's where you die so quickly. okay I've rambled long enough.

I played this game a while back and had some issues with it and put it away for a time. Since I've played about every mmorpg out there and finally have come back to eve and realized it really is one of the best games.
Added bonus, not l337 skillz people in game, or at lease really low volume. Heven forbid we actually play a game to enjoy it rather the pawn joo all.

How are you involved?
Bluntly speaking, you're not involved in the game or the world mythos unless you make the effort to become involved. It is incumbent on the player to determine their goals, their character personality and, from there, decide what they want to achieve in what order. The possiblities exist to be anything in that you want to be. Whether you can actually do that I cannot honestly say. From where I sit, it certainly looks possible.
On the downside, leaving the world mythos this open-ended seems to have eliminated any sort of in-game story immersion, occasional events like the Amarr Championship not withstanding. Events that are reported almost daily seem to have little effect on the ingame world and no over-arching consequences that I've found, so far. Perhaps long time players can point out where I'm wrong - I'd be grateful, believe me. This is a rich, interesting game but the lack of in-game story content is a major downer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue. - Franžois, duc de La Rochefoucauld |

I have a problem when people accuse those who don't feel what its all about of being seekers of instant gratification. I'll take my gratification slow if its comming. But I dont see it.
1. What a player does should change over time. A high level player should NEVER mine for instance. But each stage of the game should be gratifying in itself. I shouldn't always be hoping for some fun if/when I get the next skill/ship/etc.
2. This is supposed to be multiplayer, but that aspect of the game does not seep through everywhere. Eve needs to create more incentive for conflict and cooperation. They need to have "mutiplayer" missions. They need to plop valuable limited assets in between corporations to incite them against each other. Or they need to introduce a heinous enemy ravageing the universe to force cooperation from time to time.
corporations must be forced to defend their assets, not simply camp on them. Needs to be more conquest.
Everything can NOT be hands off. The gratificaiton must come quicker. Its a "game" after all, I have real life for long term satisfaction.

Yea I must agree the community and relaxation from playing it is very addicting. Im in Caldari (I just started playing yesterday through the trial) and I was impressed by the casual chat as well as game-based chat, which made it very easy to settle in and chat away while playing.
And today, I found several people in my classes who play! How cool is that
