I just beat Mass Effect today and I have to say it was awesome... but simultaneously, I found it kind of lacking. I've been looking for the "best RPG ever" since I was young... and can never seem to come across it.
To date, my favorite RPGs ever are FF 2 / 3 for the SNES... 4 / 6 for you purists)... however, whenever I look for new RPGs, I'm always looking for something different...
To me, the perfect RPG would consist of the following... -Skill based. -Very deep technical aspect of character customization / leveling up. I like to start with nothing and finish any way I'd like. -Very engaging story, like the early FF games, even though the game is open ended. -LONG game experience... as in to the tune of 200 - 500 hours in ONE play through.
The Bioware games today (Mass Effect / KoTOR) are the most fun I've found to play, but they don't really totally meet what I'm looking for... especially in the depth and length department.
I've also given a run to Morrowind / Oblivion but... maybe too open ended. I get bored too quickly.
So am I lost a cause? Is there anyone who shares these views or something similar? What would you say is the best RPG ever, or what would make for it? Do you know of anything that meets my desires that I may have just missed?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That made me laugh... hard. Never going to happen and if it does, the game will suck. --------

Morrowind with the 6th house mod that lets you join the 6th house and eventually become its leader, or morrowind with the sword of the pethria (not shure how its spelled) total conversion vvardefell is still on the map but you might as well forget that its there ---------------------------------------------

Oldies but superlative at fulfilling those requirements:
* Fallout 1 & 2 (post-apocalypse sci-fi drenched in dark humour and tactical fights)
* Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (particularly the second part + expansion: you already start at a higher level and commanding a lot of firepower, spells and skills while fighting likewise enemies, making for some very involved tactical fights where you'll be pausing constantly to decide and tweak your PC's actions. It's better to play them sequentially, though)
* Planescape Torment (very similar mechanics to Baldur's Gate - it uses the same engine and rules - but featuring a darker, twistedly original take on the standard-fare D&D setting and story. Brilliantly realized with a lot of character)

That was my first thought =)
Tales of Syphonia is awesome also (spell?)
Dragon warrior 3 for the NES... =)
I love Zelda games also, but they usually aren't on the long side of games (and are pretty predictable... but i still love'em)
Skies of Arcadia, gosh i loved that game.. musta beat it at least a dozen times. but my brother sold our Dreamcast

This. Oh so very much this. Let me hereby bestow 5 internets upon you.
I don't even remember anymore how often I played through BG2 .. at least 6 times, I'd guess - two or three times of that with just 1 character and exploiting dodgy mechanics to the fullest :P Aside from the great replayability, BG2 shines with great party banter. Some seriously funny stuff in there.
PS:T is just so wonderfully twisted and weird, imho everyone should play it at least once, if only to understand how dull most RPG settings are. Also great soundtrack.
Fallout .. well, it's Fallout. Go play :P
Also if you want something newer, try NWN2. (1 sucked hairy donkey balls tbqfh. But maybe that was just me expecting something like BG2)

One more vote for Crono Trigger
Too bad Crono Cross didn't come even close.
Second on my list is FF4 (the one with Cecil) .. old school, but boy I loved everything about it. Up there is also FF7, of course.. But all FF were pretty good (except 8 which is better left in some corner to die a moldy death).
Other stuff to play: Lunar , Dragon Quest series (if you like REALLY LONG RPGs, this one is for you), Earthbound (different but very good), the Xeno series (XenoGears, XenoSaga 1,2,3 .. but it's more an animated movie with a RPG included, I like it, but some don't). For skill based you better look at the tactical RPGs.. start with FF tactics. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

Baldur's Gate 2 would have to be my favourite RPG. It's just so damned good. Then I'd go for Neverwinter Nights with both expansions (the second one, Hordes of the Underdark, is brilliant). I'm currently playing through NWN2 and even with all the patches it's still buggy as hell. It's good though, but nowhere near as good as the original.

I'm hoping Mass Effect will get a proper port to PC, certainly looks nice sofar. Out in May

Going to have to say that the RPG I have most fond memories of is Pokemon Blue for the Game Boy - got that when I was 9 and I loved it.

Order yourself a copy of Baldur's Gate 2 or Neverwinter Nights now! Your lack of beardiness must be fixed. Bioware cured my pogonophobia many years ago. They can do the same for you.
EDIT: I suck at forums today.

Edited by: Forando on 19/02/2008 09:59:07 I'd choose Baldur's Gate II any day. It got strong storyline, good replay value and chance to hump girls - What more do you want? If I remember correctly, you can actually complete Baldur's Gate (1+expansion) and transfer your character to Baldur's Gate II, this way continue your adventure, that will offer quite some play hours.
Planescape Torment have way too cool dialog and quite ok story too, but I don't find it has the same replay value and it's finished way to fast.
The Fallout series. This puppy offers a lot of freedom and awkward moments. If I have to play a RPG, I'm more for the fantasy setting instead of the post-nuclear setting of Fallout. So I don't like this one as much as the others.
Neverwinter Nights, I found was an OK game. Over average story, but it has more of a hack'n'slash feel to it, coming from games like Baldur's Gate (I/II). But Neverwinter Nights (1) and it's expansions is sure to entertain for a while, no doubt. Neverwinter Nights II, seemed more like just a reason to update the graphic engine for the mod developers and get charged for it, than an actually game.
Icewind Dale series, although lacking in story compared to many other RPG of same style, has some GREAT battles. If you're all into tactics and clever use of abilities, Icewind Dale II could easily give you hours of action. Just do yourself the favor of playing on one of the harder settings!
Most of these are (A)D&D-style games, and most of them runs on the Infinity Engine. I'm sure there are other great games out there, but most of the alternatives I've tried, like Morrowind, I've found I easily get bored of.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

FF3/6 ( hey all you FF fanboys, FF7 sucked compared to 3/6)
Earthbound
IMO nothing has come close to these three
I enjoyed Xenogears and Suikoden but they werent nearly as good as the three listed above.

what? Despite being a good RPG, NWN had a **** storyline. that was it's big problem.
virtually the only good quest in the whole game was the ghost-town, with the demon sealed inside. ps. that was a spoiler. Signature removed. Too large and flashing signatures are not really permitted. Navigator |
