* Fallout 1 & 2 (post-apocalypse sci-fi drenched in dark humour and tactical fights)
* Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (particularly the second part + expansion: you already start at a higher level and commanding a lot of firepower, spells and skills while fighting likewise enemies, making for some very involved tactical fights where you'll be pausing constantly to decide and tweak your PC's actions. It's better to play them sequentially, though)
* Planescape Torment (very similar mechanics to Baldur's Gate - it uses the same engine and rules - but featuring a darker, twistedly original take on the standard-fare D&D setting and story. Brilliantly realized with a lot of character)

My favourite for the sheer artistry and creativity of plot is Final Fantasy VI on the SNES
Hotly followed by:
Secret of Mana (SNES) Final Fantasy VII (really epic) Final Fantasy XII (Best RPG on PS2 IMO) Mass Effect (360) Really grabbed my attention and held it to the end.

I vote Knights Of The Old Republic as the best RPG I have ever played. It's actually my favourite game too.

Well, RPGs are the games i basically spend most of my time on. And yes, there is HUGE Final Fantasy/Square-Enix fanboyism involved, but who cares, im going to give you my list anyway.
FF 4 - really good game, good storyline and pretty awesome characters. The whole dark knight to paladin thing is cool
FF 5 - good job system, which i find the newer final fantasies lack. Also more challenging than most of the other ones. Actually took strategy to beat the final boss, whereas with 4 and 6 it was just attack attack attack attack watch ending cutscene
FF 6 - Very good characters and overall a fun game. Lots of characters also. Theres just something awesome about one of your party members being an uncontrollable yeti who throws your people at the enemy.
FF 7 - Probably one of the best. Just an epic game in general. Awesome storyline, good cutscenes and very good gameplay and stuff.
FF8 - The story is very good, especially the development of Squall's character, but the gameplay kinda lacks in places. A few too many boring parts.
FF9 - Deserves far more recognition as a great game than it gets. Its a little strange, but the game itself has very good gameplay. The last bosses and stuff are a bit wierd also, especially how you seem to end up fighting some random guy you've never even heard of before for a last boss.
FF10 - Good characters, awesome cutscenes, but way too easy for my tastes. I must say though, the Sphere Grid was a very, very good way to develop characters.
FF10-2 - Great in that its basically just one long soft **** cutscene, but was disappointingly easy.
Running out of time so i'll make it a little shorter.
FF12 - Amazing cutscenes. Definately one of my favourites.
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - epic game, amazing custscenes, pretty good characters, although some of the noises made by enemies in battles were very irritating (those Masqurade guys going "how dare you?" and those women-fish things screaming ****ed me off). Its also nice and long
Terranigma - Amazing game, doesn't seem to be very well heard of though. Played through it many times and it never ceases to entertain me.
Secret of Mana - Was fun doing the last boss with 3 players using some multi tap thing. Very good gameplay in general.
Theres more i've played and enjoyed, and i could go into a lot more detail, but i dont have time and chances are noone will read this anyway :) I'm highly biased about most things, but it has nothing to do with the overall view of my corp or alliance |

Edited by: Krasnij Okjabre on 19/02/2008 14:39:14 For me, FF7 wins hands down, great story, confusing to pick up then impossible to put down. FF8 wasn't bad but I hated the junctioning system compared to Materia.
Other than that (and some may say it's an adventure game but in my mind if you are developing a character it's role play), it'd be Any of the Eye Of The Beholder series, or Dungeon Master on the Amiga.
Kras.

Good RPGs: FF4,5,6 and 7 Chrono Trigger and Cross Valkyrie Profile 2 The Witcher Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Paradise Craked (personal opinion) Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager Dark Sun: Shattered Lands Disgaea 1 and 2

I freely admit that I was one of the people that got bored of morrowind and Oblivion too. Oblivion was like a detonation of awesomeness, that lasted just about as long as you expect an explosion to last. The main storyline was horrid, and while the game was good with 50+ mods, the only part that truly stood out for me was the Dark Brotherhood storyline.
I've also sought after the perfect RPG for a long time, and I can't claim to have found it yet.
Baldurs gate, Planescape Torment and Fallout are both legendary games that should be tried. Fallout especially I have fond memories off, although it does, contrary to fanboy opinion, have some flaws in it.
The SNES is a great console for quality RPGs, and there are tons of great emulators out there. Out of that, Chrono Trigger is mentioned a gazillion times, and while it is a good game, it's not as holy and divine as people make it out to be. Personally, I found Terranigma and Lufia II:Rise of the Sinistrals (Don't EVER bother with Lufia I. The two are as different from each other as night and day. Literally.) to be the best SNES games I've ever played, even surpassing FF6 and Super Metroid.
I'm still trying to emulate those two on my DS. -_-
In terms of PC, there have been a few good modern games.
-Neverwinternights 2 + Expansion have their flaws, but with some UI mods it remains a very very enjoyable game with epic customization of character. If you like DnD, it's definitely worth trying.
Mass Effect is supposed to be good, but to be honest I find many of the Bioware games to be too similar, and my personal preference goes out to Nwn2 as opposed to KotOR etc. It really does seem like they have a mold which they apply to new game concepts.
I'll try and think of some other games that I have inevitably forgotten due to my migraine at the moment, and maybe post back later. :) ----------------------

no, lufia 1 and 2 are not different, lufia 2 was simply improved in every way. everything that was wrong with lufia 1 was fixed in 2. (and I do mean everything) -----------------------------------

I feel ya, Kotor was a damn load of fun finishing, suprisingly as 2 weeks prior to playing the game I was at my friend who had the game, at the time he was talking through a menu of options to some kind of frog he had to get off of the ship. Needless to say I dissed him for it. Mass effect was awesome as well.
But yeah still missing something. I completely agree about Oblivion, it's too open ended and I too got bored. It didn't really seem to matter what I'd do, it was never significant and it felt like one big grind, one that didn't put you ahead of the enviroment that levelled with you.

ooh damn forgot about that one... I almost lost my job over that game hehe. Great storyline everything!
what? Despite being a good RPG, NWN had a **** storyline. that was it's big problem.
virtually the only good quest in the whole game was the ghost-town, with the demon sealed inside. ps. that was a spoiler.
Perhaps I like ****ty storylines then, all I remember is that I was so sucked into the game, I called in sick from work to play it. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. Baldur's Gate 1 & (particularly) 2 Planescape: Torment
Works of genius. I've lost count of the number of times I've played BG2 through completely, trying out different parties and approaches. The NWN series is prettier, I guess, but just doesn't have the depth of character interaction.

FF X and Knights of The Old Republic were good also, pretty much any RPG that can make you feel a powerful emotion and sucks you into the game is good. --------------------------------------

Am I the only one that owned/played Tales of Syphonia? Or Skies of Arcadia? I loved those games.
Legend of Dragoon was another one i liked. Though I never finished it because it was my friends and i didn't own a playstation.
Shenmue was good also, although a bit short.

Edited by: Calvin Firenze on 19/02/2008 23:16:08 I'm a big fan of the old school stuff..(that everyone has already mentioned at least once)
Chrono Trigger Secret of Mana Secret of Evermore Lufia II Final Fantasy 7 and I'm almost ashamed to admit it but..Super Mario RPG too..
However, Final Fantasy 12 has pretty much stolen the last 12 hours of my life. I bought the collector's edition I dunno how long ago and finally got around to playing it last night, and its actually pretty good. Decent story so far, and the changes to battle mechanics are very refreshing after all the other FF games with random encounters. Kinda like playing a hack&slash RPG.
EDIT: Forgot LUNAR 1 and 2 ____
