baldurs gate 2.
Baldur's Gate 2 is a very, very good game. The character customization might be lacking, both due to the old-fashioned graphics and the ADnD rules, but the story and gameplay still seek their equal, even 8+ years after that game has been released. My first play through took 8 months....

Originally by: Vina no, lufia 1 and 2 are not different, lufia 2 was simply improved in every way. everything that was wrong with lufia 1 was fixed in 2. (and I do mean everything)
I dunno, I felt the plot recounting and the vastly inferior gameplay elements as well as the puzzles that so defined Lufia II justified defining the games as entirely different.
Lufia II resulted in a close emotional connection with the characters because of their interaction and depth, something which some RPG's forget to do at times. It's brilliant to have a team of cool characters, but if some of them are generally at an airship (Hint hint), their contribution to the story is hardly noteworthy, in my humble opinion.
Lufia II was brilliant though,I advise others to try it out. ^_^ ----------------------

I completed mass effect and was kinda dissapointed, 20 odd hours of gameplay (and I sucked at it) and it was over .
All the jazz about making great decisions, emotional response from other characters was utter trash and the lack of scope was quite a let down.
Still, it was a fun rollercoaster first time 'round.
The best RPG I have ever played is Morrowind, I have oblivion and it lacks a certain something that it's younger brother has. Morrowind is probably the best RPG I have ever played.
I probably need to play more games in that genre.

X3: Reunion... (also, x-tension, x beyond the frontier, x2: the threat... and x3: Terran Conflict was recently announced)
Anyhow... They are space based, where you pilot your ship, and can remotely control others... Control is either mouse/keyboard, or joystick/keyboard, or just the keyboard if you are hardcore like that. I personally suck with anything short of a joystick. Keyboard is a must however, it has the critical hotkeys on it... Trust me, you would get nowhere without your keyboard.
Pros: +Gameplay will more or less last as long or as short as you want it to (no defined goals, do whatever you want... really... The egosoft forums have people who have been loyal X-universe gamers since '99) +Game is more or less entirely skill based (if you cant fly your ship worth crap... well, i sure hope you know how to buy low and sell high) +Economy is ... well, there... the GOD engine will put up stations if the economy is lacking +The game is completely modable... if you dont like something, change it! +there is currently a large playerbase, many of whom are more or less devoted to the game (in terms of modding at least...) +You are forced to do nothing. +there are currently a few large mods out, changing the whole x-universe, if you really want. Like XTM... Changes everything. (i will think of more later) Cons: -the AI is stupider than the average American (no offense intended...) -the game is a bit slow to start... nothing changes based on your 'level', the galaxy more or less stays the same -You cannot change your character. (rather, you can change your ship, what weapons you fit...) -the plot is slightly lacking, and you need to know the backstory, else it makes little sense... imo x2's plot was better (had a sad ending though) Ive noticed that 99.9% of people on these forums have a signature. If you are one of the 0.1% that doesnot have a sig, copy this into your sig, and display your defiance towards people with sigs. |

It doesn't match your first two requirements but it can meet the last two:
Suikoden 1-5
One cool think about thouse games is that you can use the charicters from your last end game save. In the previous game.

Quote: I've also given a run to Morrowind / Oblivion but... maybe too open ended. I get bored too quickly.
Try the predecessor, Daggerfall. (and I know a lot of people hate this game ) If you're patient enough to get past the automated quests and 2D townspeople, you will be richly rewarded. It's the only game I've played over a period of years, gone back and discovered something new. And I still haven't completed it it's a larger game world than Morrowind or Oblivion and has an intricately political main quest (once you get it started...it sort of has to come to you) with interestingly ambiguous characters and a solid backdrop of lore.
Though it sounds like it's the style of gameplay that bores you, from your post in seems like you want a combination of linear progression in terms of story and open endedness in terms of choice...which is pretty rare.

Yeah, but story was listed as a criteria.
Quote: FF8 - The story is very good, especially the development of Squall's character, but the gameplay kinda lacks in places. A few too many boring parts.
What? The story was awful. It was trite and cheap. What kind of a twist is 'they're all from the same orphanage' (sorry if I ruined that stunner for anyone) The characters are two dimensional cardboard cut outs, some of which seeming disturbingly familiar to their predecessors in 7 (Squares reluctance to move from a formula once it works I think - though I liked the new direction in X)

I agree, the interactions between your party members in particular made for a richer experience... That's probably the best compromise between linear storytelling and freedom of choice you'll get, actually. The story isn't that brilliant (it's your general on-a-quest-to-keel-a-bad-guy fare) but the characters are well thought out and at least it's credible (eyes FF8)

Baldur's Gate II/ToB is the best one in my opinion. Second best is Planescape: Torment, which would be the best if it wasn't so much shorter than BG II.
Best RPG since those two is The Witcher followed by Morrowind. I was rather skeptical about The Witcher since it was made by unknown Polish company but it really surprised me. It's definitely a game every RPG fan should have. |

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Darklands
More than 15 years old, but a trully epic 'realistic' RPG in medieval Europe. It has a skill system and a random quest generator that keeps you going even after you beat the main questline. Probably the closest a computer RPG ever came to P&P roleplaying.
You can find it in abandonware sites by now.. ------------------------ I don't believe in sigs. |

I admit the whole orphanage thing was kinda lame, but i enjoyed the way the story developed. Very good cutscenes, a pretty decent junctioning system thing (didnt like the way you upgraded weapons though) and the fact that random battle npcs level up as you do, so you can quite happily train to level 100 on disc one were just pretty cool.
I guess thinking about it it was the gameplay which i liked most of all, and the cutscenes, and just generally the length and stuff. Been a long time since i played it, but i spent one hell of a long time playing the card game. I'm highly biased about most things, but it has nothing to do with the overall view of my corp or alliance |

shadowrun on the snes was my fave, its nowhere near up to the play times your after but its a great plot and was revolutionary when it first came out, cant believe the end boss said ill see you in shadowrun 2 then they never made it.
secret of mana was great fun if a little too cute, i liked oblivion that game deserves respect for the sheer quality of it.

man this sucks i cant get daggerfall to play properly like it did when i first got it(back in 96). i know the computers today go to fast for old games like daggerfall but, even the dos programs that are supposed to slow down the PC still dont get it to run like it did way back when.
so far i tried using DOSbox and turbo to slow things down. installed it with the little install wizard someone came up with.
monsters keep spinning the controls are very laggy and picture and sound are choppy. well granted its been prob 11 years sense i last played daggerfall. i dont think the game was like this.

Maybe try to get it to run with VDMSound? Its very similar to DOSbox, but sometimes will run a program correctly when DOSbox will not.

Originally by: Isiskhan Oldies but superlative at fulfilling those requirements:
* Fallout 1 & 2 (post-apocalypse sci-fi drenched in dark humour and tactical fights)
* Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (particularly the second part + expansion: you already start at a higher level and commanding a lot of firepower, spells and skills while fighting likewise enemies, making for some very involved tactical fights where you'll be pausing constantly to decide and tweak your PC's actions. It's better to play them sequentially, though)
* Planescape Torment (very similar mechanics to Baldur's Gate - it uses the same engine and rules - but featuring a darker, twistedly original take on the standard-fare D&D setting and story. Brilliantly realized with a lot of character)
You already named the three best computer game series.
I also have to bring forth a kind of unknown RPG (hackÆn slash RPG) that I liked, its name is ôAlundraö (the first part, not the second part, of the series). Way better then any Zelda game will ever get.
I also strongly recommend to NOT try any of bethsoftÆs ôRPGsö, theyÆre simply crap with none of the epic RPG elements other RPGs have. ItÆs like a big world without a soul.

Ignore Oblivion... A tragic mistake in that part. While i'm a TES fan to the bone, i have to admit that Oblivion lacks any soul due to it's too generic overall setting.
Daggerfall and Morrowind though come over much more authentic, especially that last one. Morrowind overflows with soul... Best setting/art design i've ever seen, not many games can follow.

Morrowind.
In their times, Alternate Reality and Dungeon Master were my favourites.
Those who favour FF and stuff like that should have a look at Skies of Arcadia (originally on the Dreamcast).
EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...
