Edited by: Protheroe on 19/02/2008 12:30:10 Anybody logging in to the test server recently may have seen the new news story about a scientific conference held to discuss a bright object that has inexplicably appeared in the sky - no doubt the much discussed "shooting star" many people have spotted.
Judging by the oblique rerences to Carl Sagan (a proponent of extraterrestrial life) and Craig Venter (a prominent geneticist) in the story, I assume this will either involve the Jove or aliens of some kind, perhaps a new race.
Any thoughts?

Whatever it develiops into, it will be interesting.
CCP used to do alot of RP things around the universe and bring the players more involved with the actual game rather than just grinding ISK/Pew pew.
Seems over the past couple of years they've forgotten about this part of the game.. hey.. I for one, whilst not a huge RP player for the above reason, will welcome such an injection.

It might be the coolest space RTS since Homeworld. Its like Hegemonia + Homeworld.
A new RP event would be cool. I've only heard stories and never actually had a chance to partake in one of these events. However adding a new race isn't the best idea...

I don't think CCP knows what it is either. It's probably all the blank star maps which have been plaguing people since Trinity released all jammed into one spot.
But no worries. As soon as ISD do a story about it, CCP will put it on the list of bug fixes and nerf it.

Anything which expands the game and the background fluff is good for me.
If it also expands the races or missions then all the better. Lets bring on diplomacy missions, spy missions etc etc with a whole new race.

My theory! This 'star' is the first of many strange sightings across the universe of EVE. We will shortly see new long missions to investigate the sightings. Eventually first contact is made with a race of parasites, spawned originally by Jovian scientists to maintain their space stations while they were occupied elsewhere. These parasites have rabbit-like bodies but their claws and had resemble that of the ancient Earth creature, the 'Aardvark'. The parasites were genetically designed to think for themselves so they could adapt to any new damage or waste within the stations. Their method of communication was at first unknown and deemed irrelevant by the Jovian scientists, until they became aggressive and malicious towards their handlers. 3 years after regional distribution of the parasites, a Galentean sociologist published a paper on the behavior of 50 of the most common 'domestic' animals; though many believed his interpretation of the term domestic to be somewhat odd. His paper included 3 pages on the parasites, identifying odd behavior and the assumed method of subsonic communication. A few years past... Nothing wants to be a slave; the last reports of the parasites was that they had stopped obeying the orders of their owners unless their immediate habitat was threatened. 13 hours after the mass celebration of 'free life day' had ended, 33 stations across multiple regions had their hull integrity breached by hundreds of small bore holes all leading directly outwards to space. The stations were evacuated, thankfully nobody was hurt. Reports came out that the only remains of the parasites were their dens covered in an unusual radioactive plasma. ..........
Because I'm so eager to play in the ambulation environment the story will continue inside the stations where pilots are confronted by infrequent station breaches by savage breeds of the parasite. They may occur while they are walking through the corridor to the war room or while nobody is in the station and the first to enter are greeted by a new population. The pilots then have to kill them with their personal safety pistol (different based on race), and block up the hole they came in through... leading to all kinds of puzzles and extra content :P (this could go so many ways so I'll put my imagination to rest now) oh.. but before I do, instead of a pistol they could use fisticuffs... that would look cool.. or they only get 5 bullets then they have to use fisticuffs.. even better........ oh.. couldn't help that bit!
----------- I just thought that I'd jump on the bandwagon and make a story ... I do hope however, that CCP will look at this post and say "ooh that's good, we'll do something like that".

I unfortunately do not know that reference. I only know what a white hole has been refered to in real life scientific circles. If this was what they claimed where ever the heck it is there will be a LOT of destruction.

Where did you read this exactly? A theoretical white hole and the event that caused the Big Bang are entirely different...

Well, in a way he's right. You don't know for certain that if this theoretical point emitting energy doesn't throw out all this energy in a massive BANG. Nobody has ever actually witnessed one, you can't say for certain what it is.
Theories behind them may be different, doesn't mean the real thing (if they exist/existed at all) aren't the same. |

Well from inital research and triangulations, using a basic knowlege of singularity theory Atarvin and Delta Jax have provided a hypothesis on the location of the new whitehole in relation to several measurements, we estimate its existance approximatly 18,580,000,000 au's 'Zero' orbital mills above above the City of God - Shastal.

Can't be a white hole. The thing just came out of nowhere, an the fact that it showed up on all systems simultaneously indicates it has some kind of serious time-distortion involved. In fact, it is pretty unexplainable how it could not be known before and then show up everywhere as if it was always there. Also, the measurements of the radiation seem to be so regular it is very likely to be intelligence-made. My bet would be some kind of man-made wormhole, or another Jovian experiment, one that did NOT go well...

On a different note, it could be an 'Order' experiment. The Jove are afraid of them, we know that they are more powerful than the Jove too. http://www.eve-online.com/races/theodicy/Theodicy_All.pdf We, the pod pilots, could be ruining their plans for controlling Eve, so they may be preparing a new plan.

Originally by: ChironV Its the Jita server cluster heating up to its usual operating temp of 20 million deg.

The story says its a black body, so if this thing in question is this cluster you speak of, I'll assume its a sphere and that the degrees is in Celsius. Following WienÆs law, the maximum wavelength the cluster emits is 1.45*10^-10m, or 0.145nm (2.07 ExaHz). This is well into the realm of X-rays, which we canÆt see. So weÆll see it glow a brilliant blue, the highest frequency we can see.
But this ôstarö is white, so it canÆt be this so called æJita clusterÆ. Also, for the light to reach all the systems at the same time, it could be far enough away that from its point of view, weÆre all the same distance from it. But itÆs much too big to be too far away. So the other option is that itÆs the work of the Jovians.
Oh those crazy Jovians, whatÆll they think of next?

My take on this- I still think this will be used as a plot device to involve as many players as possible in an invasion type scenario. IÆve played a quite a few mmorpgÆs where there have been mass npc invasions of areas, forcing players to team up to fight off the onslaught. It was quite fun actually. I suspect that the æstarÆ is the first stage of EveÆs human ancestorÆs trying to reach the ælost coloniesÆ. It would require no coding for æaliensÆ, just perhaps some different ship models to represent the invaders fleet. I would heartily look forward to something like this, perhaps the destruction of one of the invaders ships would drop ultra rare items etc? Only my take on the matter mind you!

It's a gamma burst from a collapsing super cluster of stars.
Aimed specifically at Jita, it will ablate the entire system down to its component quarks, leaving just a tiny smear where the most populous system in EVE used to be.
But if I were a betting pod pilot, I would put money on some form of expedition being launched to investigate the new phenomenon. Probably one expedition from each faction, or a special COSMOS/DED mission. One that will be attacked and sabotaged. --

I was wandering around the NASA website after seeing tonight's lunar eclipse when I found something interesting that I'd forgotten about.
In 2002, the star V838 Monocerotis suddenly became the brightest star in all the Milky Way, overshadowing all others. NASA's site says that V838 is 20,000 lightyears away from our sun, and that it's probably a young binary star; but aside from that, they have no idea why it might have suddenly become so bright.
The website also says that the star's light will continue to expand across the V838 solar system for at least the remainder of the decade.
How cool is that?
Maybe the white star in our EvE sky is a tribute to that? |

Edited by: Calimor on 21/02/2008 14:28:06 Here's my two cents:
I think it is somehow related to The Order. Only they seems to be powerful enough (or crazy) to create something that would so much defy the laws of physics.
Jovians were kinda supposed to be a playable race. If something went bad and it was the Jovian's fault, it wouldn't make much sense to be able to play with them. Besides, The Order is supposed to be the big villain of EVE.
So I think it will be the first public revelation of The Order, the Jovians will open their stargates back to the Empire, and will join us as a playable race (or not).
Quote: We, the pod pilots, could be ruining their plans for controlling Eve, so they may be preparing a new plan.
Yea, for all that's worth it, that may as well have been the Jovian plan all along when they decided to release the Pod technology. In truth we may be being just weapons in their war all along.
