I have a new sound equipment (7.1 surround), and first thing I did was enabling sound in EVE again. However, when I turned off music, I heard a low sound, like blowing wind - and it came from EVE! Now, I was floating in space - but there is no wind in space...
Can someone tell me what the intention of that was? --- This is your Captain speaking. Thank you for flying with our spaceline. Please remain seated until the ship has completely burned out. Thank you. |

Edited by: Fireaero on 22/02/2008 03:53:27 Edited by: Fireaero on 22/02/2008 03:51:51 Have you been in space? Are you sure there is no wind?
But the real answer is that the pod simulates sounds to the pilot to make his experience of space more enjoyable :D
If a tree falls in space, and there's no there no one around to hear it, does it really make a sound? and if not, maybe just a breeze ?
QED, there is wind in space.

The sounds are only there for the entertainment.
Do you realy want to know how in Star Trek an epic fight Federation vs Borg would sound like? IŠll give u an hint: You would hear NOTHING. Boring. But this is Sci-Fi....and in Sci-Fi we have sounds in space. Period

Well, we allready know that Star Trek isn't really following the laws of physics... But if you look at the new Battlestar Galactica - their sound and physics is close-to-reality, and still it's not boring... I think I'll take it as "simulations made by the pod"...
(and about schroedinger up there: you cannot be sure the tree even fell as long as you didn't go there to see and thereby measure it. up to the point of proof it's always belief - and scientists are greater believers than every priest on earth ) --- This is your Captain speaking. Huge example! You won!
And even worse, the warp speed allows us to travel much faster than light speed. A 3 AU/s is already 1500x the light speed !

Theres an explanation in the backstory section. In the short story where the Caldari buy the pod technology off the Jove. The Jove technician who is explaining how it works says something like "there is no sound in space of course but we found that the pod-pilots psyche would more easily accept the new 'body' if all senses where stimulated, so we have a computer syntesize sounds". So in short, without fake wind you would go mad, mad I tell you!

technically there are winds in space, just not air currents. Instead there are solar winds.
Scientists have been working on solar sails (or at least the theory behind them) because they believe you can actually harness solar wind for propulsion.

as someone explained above there is a back story explaination the pod is simple connecting your sound sences to hear something else perhaps your hearing the solar wind

While the science at this time says you can't heard anything in space due to the fact that sound waves need air or another medium to propagate.
Wait, what? Who says you can't hear anything. is you pod not filled with fluid ? are the ships "the ones without gaping holes in them" are not filled with air?
Who says that the process of warping doesn't bring some interesting particles bounce action off your hull. that sounds just like wind after the impact sounds are translated through the hull of your ship and through the air/fluid of your pod.
Since as far as we know IRL there isn't a way to transfer a ship past the light limit theres no way to say theres no such thing as a wind sounds in space when traveling past the speed of light.

I have taked to an engeneer about this and he tells me that solar winds making small consumtion in shields the shield generator tries to balance that as if there are only random minor changes in the shield, the gnerator starts zu vibrating. and that is the sound you here.

Sounds are simulations by the pod, it is in one of EVE stories. Seems that lack of sound made people go crazy so they translate other effects to make sound.

Belief is the wrong word. In the case of Shroedinger's cat, you can be pretty sure it's dead after a year of no food or water. "Pretty sure" is not a belief; it's a statistical probability.

Hmm sound 'in' space?.. no there isnt any... BUT There IS sound 'inside' your ship. The roar of the engions humming threw the deck-plates, the impacts of shells against the hull. (Granted you shouldnt hear anything if an impact hit the 'shields' but im sure you'd hear the noise of loose items in the ship being knocked around from the impact of weaponsfire on the shields) Lets see what else.. oh yea.. the sound of teh weapons themselves fireing off, the roar of the missles engions ignighting befor they pass out of the launch tubes... there is no sound in 'space'.. but the ships themselves have sounds constantly on the 'inside'. --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. Depends on where you're listening to it from.. If you're inside one of the ships, you may be able to hear its weapons firing, and maybe the hits occuring on the ship's hull (as long as the area is pressurized). You wouldn't hear the hits on the other ship's hull, or an explosion if it popped.
Though if you were listening from in space, you wouldn't hear anything. Not just because of the lack of atmosphere, but also because you'd be a frozen corpse. Or if you were watching from a third, uninvolved ship, it would be a very quiet battle.

You can hear a bit more than what you are saying. First thing is as we are pod pilots, we should be hearing from microphones in several places. Hull of the ship is a good place to start, may the ship be pressurized or not, the hull will transmit the vibrations of being hit. Should something explode not far from you, you will receive a wave of debrits making some kind of explosion wind.
From a third ship not involved but close enough, you would have the explosions cause some debrit hits and 'wind' on the hull.
Anyway, backstory states that the jove found it a good thing to use all our senses while being a pod pilot, so they added some sound rendering for distant things happening so we can hear more than our own hull tearing, engines blowing and guns firing.
For the wind, well, wasn't that the generator or some sort of solar wind?
PS : or air conditioning again? -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !
