Wales was a Principality, not a country. Then it was annexed, so it became part of England.
It has had some lawmaking devolved to its own assembly or parliament but that still doesn't make it a country.
They're much better than the English though ;)

Edited by: Sereifex Daku on 23/02/2008 21:15:35 Frankly, I'm surprised that people still think like this. Nationality is quite an outdated concept imo. It was used back in the day to convince you that you were genetically superior to the French or Spanish or whoever so that you would be 'motivated' (read: tricked) into signing up for military service for a few pennies a month.
What's so special about being Welsh? Are you people born with inherent super powers? Nope. I am British, or more importantly, I am Westener. I don't give a crap about lines that our forefathers drew in the sand and said "this is my territory, that over there is yours", nor do I give a crap about flags.

Of course nowadays we need no such motivation - we're just superior. ---- One day...one day General will be worth reading.

You're proud of the fact that you are a member of a 'nation' that flopped over before the might of the English (as opposed to the Scots, who successfully repelled the English and taught us a few tricks)? Now that's commitment!

Well yes, and England is England and we have a flag too. We also have a second flag that is supposed to represent both of us, but which Wales isn't on. If a welsh symbol were added to that flag, it doesn't lessen the value of the Welsh flag itself. Otherwise, why would you ever see anyone using the English or Scottish flags?
I always think there is a strangely self destructive attitude to certain nationalist thinkers. A sort of need to do oneself down for the sake of nationality. This is one of them- the desire NOT to be represented on your own national flag, just because you have another flag more specifically for you.
At work the other day, I had a Welsh solicitor write in to me. For reasons best known to themselves, they had thought it'd be a great idea to write the entire letter in Welsh. All very good and nationalistic I'm sure, but highly stupid. You see our office is in Wiltshire, England, and the letter was ADDRESSED to Wiltshire, England. Shockingly, no-one in our Wiltshire-based office can speak Welsh, so I had to send them an entirely pointless letter right back saying "Sorry, we can't understand you". They must know full well that the odds of an English office having any Welsh speakers in is nil-to-none, but they sent the letter in Welsh anyway, just to massage their nationalistic ego. It's self destructive nationalism at it's best. ------

Yup, and I'm sure there were a few idiots in your office who used that as an excuse to become anti-Welsh. The idiots just feed eachother while the intelligent Welsh and English people are stuck in the middle.

Sounds about right, had people talking in a group then someone came in ranting about the English (in Scotland). When I said "realy so how do you propose to solve it?" they stopped talking because,
I have an accent that sounds Scottish in England and English in Scotland, I am a big person by comparison. They realy didn't have a clue what they were on about.

On the flag you posted the dragon is a serpent, maybe a wyvern at best so that just wouldn't do (a proper dragon in the centre wouldn't be too bad).
Also what is the diagonal red cross for? I can never remember and am too tired to go digging.

As an Englishman I fully endorse this.
hopefully such a change to the flag will help cut anti-English rhetoric from the other states provided that the change ever happens and hopefully it will.

I wouldnot object to something subtle - but as an Englishman I have to say that I feel that my flag is the Cross of St. George first and foremost - in the same way that the scots and welsh - and indeed all the other little parts of GB and NI - all have their own flags. The problem is that once we add a bit for wales then the isle of man will want a bit and the channel islands will all want a bit and so on and so forth. Once this starts I could even see things like the Cornish wanting recognision in there too.
TBCH the Union Flag is a sort of early version of the EU flag (in so much as its the flag of a group of countries) and although is a pretty funky design - the deep following for this flag has fallen in the last few decades. Further devolition will only weaken the hold the Union Flag has as flag of the country.

The union flag was allways a little dull, Though not as much as the English flag (cross of St George).
Personaly I would of prefered it if we kept the Golden Wyvern of Wessex as our(the English) national flag.

Rule Brittania to be quite honest, the minority are whining about the English up here and most ignore them.
And yes, that Wyvern does look pretty sweet, but a flag isn't British without blue for the seas.
