now we all know isk spammers and we all know it sucks...
as you all well know, the problem is them using trial accounts and thus having a virtually limitless number of bannable accounts...
eventhough i appreciate ccps attempts to ban em asap, this tactics can not prevail...
any, there have been numerous suggestions and thats cool, but most of them can easily be avoided and/or are somewhat overshooting their goal, now without furter adue:
a superbly easy solution that will not need much to implement and will not shun new players genuinelly using a trial account...
REMOVE THE COPY/PASTE ABILITY FROM TRIAL ACCOUNTS!
tada! success! :P
seriously though, if these damn spammers would have to manually type in every single message instead of just using the ctrl v approach theyd go nuts and banning them would be able before theyd get 3 messages out.
it doesnt really harm any real trial account user but effectly cripples the isk selling spam
hope you like it and ccp implements it soonTM.. :P

Seems a good idea at first but when you think about it a bit it does not work. They will simply add a program that will type the sentences automatically instead using copy/paste.

Excellent Idea! This seems to be fool-proof! (Unless potential subscribers get the wrong impression that they can't copy-paste in the Eve-UI, I dont see how it can be a bad idea.) Just have a message box pop-up that says : "Copy/Paste functions are disabled for trial accounts" whenever a trial member tries to copy or paste something.

Or filter known ISK buying URLs
Or stop trials being able to link URLS at all
Or mute and flag them if they post the same line repeatedly
Or limit their EVE-mail send limit (really, which genuine trial player is going to send more than 20 eve-mails?)
Rookie Chat is at a point where there's pretty much CONSTANTLY someone spamming ISK-sale URLs. It's ridiculous yet CCP haven't done nearly enough to fight it.

yes that crossed my mind too, however that canb e helped too, simply put in that you cant "type" in more than say 10 characters per second and maybe add a program that you can "say" the same thing more often than once every 2 monutes
all of that for trial accounts ofc

Same as above.

This might work.

Might help somewhat, Won't do anything for rookie/local/trade chat spam though. |

No program can tell for sure if a character is coming from a keyboard or from another program. Under linux you could go so far to write your own kernel module that is injecting text right into the keyboard buffer. Your idea is not stopping anybody.

Mmmmm i'm on the fence for this one...
On one hand, no copy/paste functionality would look pretty stupid for many new players.
On the other hand, making the ISK sellers fingers bleed

I wish that they'd at least add a "report spam" function to email so that with one click you can notify CCP of credit spammers.

Not to mention that to disable CTRL+V outright in Windows would require the EVE client to do some potentially evil things to Explorer. Not really a thing I want CCP to do, and it would open up all kinds of potential for problems.

OR
Give all subscribing players the option to block all evemails, chat invites and channel chat from trial accounts, if a trial account tries to convo or mail you it gets enetered into your log so you can see who it was. Trial accounts that are on your buddy list bypass this filter. |

All these "solutions" are lovely but they ignore one important fact:
The spammers are making their livelihood doing this (and the people in charge are presumably getting rich) - therefore they *care* more than you do about finding ways around it.
For us (and lets be honest - CCP) it is just an irritation.
Spam and anti-spam wars will quickly escalate to the point were it is even more inconvenient for ordinary users than the noise that there is now. CCP might as well save their money and energy and leave it like it is.

It seems kinda futile to try to clean spammers out of the chat channels or eve mail.
Better to handle it at the source I'd think, if you break the isk sellers then they don't have a reason to spam. Obviously, that's also a challenging problem, but it makes more sense to fight the problem than the symptom.
I kinda liked the ideas of game mechanics to make it open season on macro miners. Or, when they find an isk seller, don't punish them, punish everyone that buys from them. They isk farmers wouldn't care that their customers are getting jacked so they'll just keep leading you to the buyers.

why dont they do what servers such as counter strike servers use, where they can only spam for 2-3 messages then it blocks them for 30 odd seconds, means that it would decrease spamming a bit

I'm gonna post here because I'd like to know how CCP is dealing with this pest and the extent of their bans. That is I'd like to start seeing again the announcements of bans and the number of accounts banned. I don't think that I have seen an official comment on this issue since 2004-5. And since 2006 I've noticed the rate of spamming increasing rapidly and steadily.
I'm rather certain that this problem is here to stay, especially since I don't see or feel any action on the behalf of CCP than to ban reported spammers. eBay is still ripe with isk offers and google yields offers as well.
This may be a small problem in regards to the economy of EVE but it is still annoying and a breach of the holy EULA. - -

The true problem is that there is an avenue, a universal channel, for the ISK spammers to do their work - Rookie Chat, and to a lesser extent, Local. By removing Rookie Chat altogether and replacing it with lots of pre-written tutorials, we could completely destroy most of the problem, leaving help requests to the realm of personal queries to Game Masters.
Alternatively, we could divide Rookie Chat into several specific channels, each with a couple CCP channel moderators to keep things smooth. These channels would have to be entered by an explicit effort on the part of the player; nothing like the current chat, which opens automatically and leaves 3000 people trying to talk over one another.
Lastly, we could remove a couple privileges of the trial accounts here and there - but remember that EVE has one of the most generous MMORPG trials in the industry, and removing that reputation could have some impact, however small, on the number of people willing to try the game for 14 days.
Overall, I think that we should combine options one and three: remove Rookie Chat and direct newbies to consult GMs/written material, as well as modifying the privileges of trial accounts. ----------------------------------------------------- With the guidance of our Lord and our Emperor, I shall crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women. |

IMHO I say flood control, if Eve's chat is anywhere close to IRC protocol it should be easy for CCP to add some flood control rules to make spamming more annoying:
- If you post more than x messages within a few seconds you're banned for 1 min. - If you repeat same message within a few seconds you are banned for 1 min. - If you are blocked by x users within y seconds, you get silent banned for z seconds (you don't know you've got banned, spammer must be connected with another account simultaneously to verify spam got through) - Push a patch that will lock down your client for x time if banned repeatedly. (They will have to wait or reinstall client to keep spamming)

Your all missing the fact that they mostly are using zombie clients that look nothing like the clients players use. They simply send out the same commands a players client would while having little to no other functionality.
Why hire 12 people to spam channels, or go one by one to each channel, when you just have a program that generates the required info and sends it to the server ? More work is put into generating the trial accounts.
The only possible filter is human, which means they need to put GMs into the channel.
The best thing to do would be to remove rookie chat, and replace it with 4 races rookie chats that a player is in for the the length of their trial. At the end of which they are put into their schools channel like normal. This decreases the number of channels needed to be monitored to 4. These 4 new rookie channels every 15 or so lines just repeat "isk buying is an EULA offence" in red, or which ever color. Disabling the posting of links would also be important.
During this time they have no Evemail at all. They can join private channels, but not make PM's. All public trade channels are also blocked. They can join corps but still have no PM or evemail till the account is paid.
The only downside is alts cant use trade channels unless they are paid accounts, which decreases the number of throw away alts created on trial accounts. I dont see a problem with that.
No doubt there's some flaws in my ideas, feel free to point them out.
Isk spam isn't going to go away, but it can be better managed.

Ban every player tbh. Ban every old player. Ban every new player. Ban all of us at the forum. Close up shop at CCP HQ and attach some motors to Iceland. Push the part attached to each of the two associated tectonic plates towards nicer climates, throwing the continents of Europe and North America into geological chaos in the process, and ensuring that no new players from either continent will attempt to subscribe to this game. All will praise their new Icelandic overlords, controllers of the Earth's very crust, wielders of the ban sticks. Shrines of frozen magma shall be raised in CCP's honor. As basalt floods choke the life out of the remaining pathetic throng of humanity, CCP in its glory shall reveal that they have created a fleet of spaceships. Into these ships will go all the descendants of BoB pilots, and all the forum whiners, and all the non-ISK selling vermin whose ancestors once experienced the Eve-Online internet spaceship game. Into these ships will also go wimminz because there's no chicks in Eve 'cause the girls are all boys (so it was said in antiquity) and trucks of alcoholic beverages. These ships will fly to the real Eve gate, which CCP in its glory has also constructed. Once there all those aboard shall reach a promised land of promise and land, which they shall farm and raise goats on. In time CCP will reopen Eve-Online and allow new subscriptions for their chosen people, and all will be well.
Please note that as fantastic as that story was, it would still be easier to achieve than just getting rid of all the isk spammers with the current trial account and petition systems.

Edited by: Faizaniel on 25/02/2008 23:38:44 In fact, you have a point - the largest inspiration for the current UI seems to have been Windows 95...anyway, like I said, remove their means and they just might abandon their ends.
