Hello,
After finally biting the bullet and asking the IT man at my boarding school if I could be allowed EVE at weekends, he agreed . So I gave him the ports (26000 and the other one) and he opened them up for me. However he says that because the main firewall is with the National Grid for Learning in Oxford, he would have to send a "change request" for them to open the ports too. He says that because it is for gaming and not learning they will be reluctant to agree (also a security risk apprently). However, if I can find a "work-around" using the schools internet connection he will see what he can do.
Unfortunatly im not terribly good at firewalls and ports etc and I was hoping that some of the more technically minded of you could help me out. I dont know if there is a way to do it without having to set ports in Oxford, or if some learning software also happens to use port 26000 (for a valid excuse for opening the port).
Please help we, I would love to play more than just holidays .
Thanks, Enroah

Edited by: Roxanna Kell on 26/02/2008 16:24:23 If you study pshycology, or philosophy, You can say that you need it so you can interview palyers of the game, or give them surveys to fill; in order to write an essay on MMorpg's, and study human behaviour, or philosophy of life from a game's point of view, and so on. I can see Business being a good excuse, as eve has an article on the BBC about its Business&Trade, they may even thing its a trading game. Do not mention any shooty shooty, or they will crusify you.
They allowed some schools to install Age of Empire, Sims, and Total war games for learning purposes, i don't see why not eve.

Get your parents to ask the school for permission. Boarding schools know where their money comes from.

Find out whether your school blocks VPN traffic. If VPN is blocked, you have persuasive argument to allow VPN traffic, as VPN is essential for any number of buisness and CIS purposes.
If/when they allow VPN: Get a linode for $15/month (www.linode.com) Use their interface to put debian stable on it, then install openvpn (apt-get install openvpn) Finally, download the openvpn client on your windows PC and install it.
As an added benefit, you can use the linode to host your own website, email, and remote storage.
Alernate solution: get a Sprint SERO account and a cheap windows mobile phone for $30/month. Buy a $20 wifi adapter for your PC. You will be able to use the windows mobile phone as a WAP for your PC. If you get a phone that supports Rev A, you can expect speeds of around 1Mbps in most cases.

Edited by: Enroah on 26/02/2008 18:06:26 Thanks for the suggestions, just to clarify, the school has permitted it and opened the nessecary ports. It is the National Grid for Learning (government owned) who now need to open ports on thier firewall which all school connect through. Either that or find a way around thier firewall so they dont need to open the ports and we can just do it from here at school.
Anyone in IT that knows how to get around that 'minor' detail?

P.S. Hi Alex, maybe be fighting you during term time as well soon .
*EDIT*
Just read above post, it is all greek to me but ill email it to the IT Technician and see if he can make sense of it. Thanks!

In my work I have to deal with Synetrix and LGFL a lot and I hate to say this but no way are they going to open up ports for a gaming session.
On the other hand miracles are known to happen so I will log a call with thier helpdesk to see what thier position is on the matter. I think the only way to sell this is, as others above have said, try and wrangle some kind of educational slant on it by the school itself.
I'll let you know what they say.

Point towards the BBC articles as well as the economic blog, lots of attention on those things currently and that might raise some interest, but getting a government agency to open up it's ports is next to impossible as that would open up a can of worms for them, why not wow next? And since none of us want schools to allow WoW in schools....
Getting past a firewall is not that easy as that would defeat the purpose of having one in the first place.

Thank you very much DouglasBadar you help is appreciated. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to try the Economics road which I think the IT Tech is not keen on. Ah well, worth a try.

Though, an EVE player may be more likely to live a healthy, wealthy, and in the grand scheme of things harmless, life of white-collar crime, insider trading, embezzlement, and insurance fraud.

Yes but if you're capable of those crimes, schools will consider your education successful

Enroah,
Apparently they have been asked before so my Education contact tells me. Apparently some enterprising young group tried to get Call of Duty through as a history project.
Upshot is that they will never allow ports opened for a game no matter what the reason. Plus there is the thorny issue of actually installing the game. Admin rights on the PC is needed and most schools/youth clubs do not allow this. Any tech that did allow it and then it all went pear shaped would not last long.
You might have got it Ok'd a few years ago before it was all out sourced but now everyone is just working to Service Level Agreements.
You never know though, the LGFL lot out in the sticks may be more accomodating than those in central London.
Good luck.
Better yet, study hard, work hard, get a great job, retire early and play Eve all day long.

And when you get a bill for $75,000 USD, don't call tech support and cry.

Hmmm, that doesnt sound very good
I will try to pass it off as an Economics project all the same. The installation is not an issue because it is my own pc which i bring to school during term time. Im about the opposite of central London so i guess its worth a shot. Funny about those CoD lot, I think EVE may at least have more chance than that! Thanks for all your help. If all else fails I could always try tunneling, if only to change skills . Ill get researching...
Thanks,
Enroah
P.S. The pingfu thing is filtered :(

Edited by: dugata on 29/02/2008 15:16:45 Just use a proxy.
Intall proxy on local machine.
Set your computer to use proxy.
Proxy sends all traffic as port 80 and makes it look like your surfing the web.
You play eve.
Edit: Your corp blew up my alts drake a few days ago
It's not difficult to do. some of the free ones are slow and unreliable but some that you pay 10-20$ a month for are pretty decent and offer a reliable connection. I suggest you do some research on the subject.
You can also setup your cellphone with unlimited data and use it as a wireless modem. Thats always an option.
