Having never felt an earthquake before I think I can say it was more the shock and surprise than feeling of imminent danger that has everyone riled up. I'm about 10 miles from the center of it and the noise was quite surprising (radiators rattling and worst of all, my son's cot shaking, he was not impressed!)
So yea, I don't think anyone was worried about the earth opening up and swallowing us all but is was quite a shock. Oh, and so far from talking to relatives nearby (we're all within about 20 miles of it) there's a few roads closed and 1 roof collapsed in that I know of so far.

It was a 5.3! The nearest major fault to us goes through iceland. Which is ironic, in a way.

we have an earthquake, and think its cool i know i was like WTF, but just started a course of anti biotics due to illness and assumed it was just me at first, till i noticed a jurrasic park like moment with my water shaking as well. was an excellent experiance, esp as no one got killed
To the Cali people that are posting omg how lame an earthquake in a negative fashion, i really dont care if you have more, this is the first iv had that i felt, and i think it was cool and an experiance, being a small one or not, and im sure as hell you get excited over things that people in the UK if it be personal or nationwide do all the time and think nothing of it, stop shooting our fun out the sky just becuase it somthing your used to, thanks.

The details of operation "bloody hell, what in buggery was that?" are classified. At this stage I can neither confirm nor deny reports that U'K have access to a planet shaker. and as for some obscure reason no pod pilots can actually set foot on a planet I consider the alternative explanation of all the members of Goonswarm jumping at once to be incorrect also.
Its the UK guys, we dont get tornadoes or earthquakes often around here so when it does happen its big news. Im sure that those people living in california have three quakes this size for breakfast (and that their bridges are bigger and better etc) but we arent in california. Please forgive our excitement that something out of the ordinary has happened.
Bloody thing woke me up, not happy about that at all. *xennith jumps up and down on the ground in revenge* -- We come for our people. (and their earthquakes). |

Nubcakes!
Undoubtedly the japanese are still the masters of the shake, but here in greece we're still sitting on the mediterranean fault and it gets giggy all the time.
One of the best ones I've ever had was like "oh damn I'm so drunk things keep spinning around. Oh wait, everyone is getting out, mebbe I'm not so drunk and it's an earthquake".
Don't forget the scale is logarithmic, so a 5 is way smaller than a 6 where you do get a foamy frappe.

Yes but we aren't used to mild shakes, they don't happen here I'm 23 and it's my first ever earthquake to us a mild shake is OMGWTFWE'REALLGONNADIE. Things are moving, why are things moving Though I loved the British pessimist/common sense approach from our neighbour "Earthquakes in England? Hmph, the world is going to pot."
I'm pretty sure the upping to 5.2 was an attempt to avoid the international lols __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus

Actually the UK has more tornadoes per square mile than almost anywhere else in the world. The difference is that ours are on a much smaller scale. so for the most part go unnoticed.
But yeah, this was a big deal for us. It's only the second quake I've experienced (I was in North Wales in 1984) and it's the first one that was undeniably a quake and the first one that actually made a noise.
I think the rumbling was nearly as frightening as being shaken awake.
Oh and just for reference there are a lot of really deep faults starting under London and moving east into the Rhine Valley. Until recently they were assumed to be inactive but doubts are being raised. If those ever let go it will shock even Californians. The worst of it is that it will damage (destroy, probably) some of the most valuable real-estate in Europe. You couldn't have a quake strike in a worse place :-/ -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran)

I was about to post pretty much exactly the same thing.
It only lasted about 10 or so seconds too. Rather strange feeling like someone was wobbling the base of my swiverly chair with their hands and a low rumble.

Lol, I woke up in the night and heard some stuff on my shelf rattling about. Thought "Huh, wonder what that is. Probably a truck outside or something", then went straight back to sleep. Got in to work today and someone was like "Wow, did any of you feel that earthquake last night?". I thought "Nah, course I didn't, you silly sod...wait...now you come to mention it..." ------
