Further adding to Sam's excellent and concise write up on this tragic set of events, we jumped in a carrier of our own to try and assist said Rorqual by repairing it's badly beaten shields.
Sadly the pilot in a desperate urge to save the stricken capital ship also accidently initiated several smart bomb blasts hence removing the drones accompanying said Rorqual.
The pilot was in time to keep the Rorqual alive while I painfully tried to disable the rogue starbase guns hungry to add a defenseless victim to their already impeccable PvP record including several ships from it's very own corporation...naughty guns.
The pilot of the Rorqual had from what we can only describe as suffered a momentary lapse of perception and inadvertently triggered a self destruct upon their pricey piece of kit. We can but console the poor pilot's loss and hope that the 'syndrome' of self destructing his worldly possessions was merely a defect in this clone.
We can but send our condolences to VoW and hope that they can see past the problems caused by a rogue starbase and a defective pilot.

Yeah it was to bad he didn't have the money for the ransom or that his corp/alliance members weren't online or wanted to help him with it. If he had the isk I'm convinced we would have gotten it. Apart from waiting 30min for him trying to get the isk, wasn't much work really. He pretty much cynod into our arms. I believe he even asked "is it ok if I cyno in this system". Was just an opportunity we took.
Well such is piracy in eve, sometimes you just miss out on the isk for various reasons.
