A question for those that have done them.
I know that doing most of them I will lose a lot of standing with the enemy factions in empire, but will I at least gain some standing with my faction (not the corporation)?
My impression is that I will lose standing with other factions without gaining any with mine (no storyline agents for level 5 from what I gather). So on that front it is a lose -lose situation.

Bingo. Popping enemy faction ships gives a hit to that faction's standing, but no gain to the opposing faction.

Which is totally awesome. If you don't want a standing hit, don't run missions. I've *never* *ever* understood the mentality of "Hey, if i pop 1000 ships, murdering millions of the citizens of two opposing factions, nobody is going to hate me"

If I work for Stalin killing **** troopers I am sure I will not be loved by the Germans and probably will be hanged if caught by them, but I aspect to get the Hero of the Communism medal or whatever it was called from the Communist, if I am a Germam Working for the army I aspect a Iron Cross for killing hundred of thousand of Russian, but I am not surprised if the Communist want to shot me.
What I find strange is killing enemy of the state by the buckload and still not getting standing with the state, while still losing it with the enemies.

Also, why would pirate factions care about faction standings? Seriously, "Dude, we'd offer you work ganking your old buddies, but you're a ruthless killer, and we're afraid of you. Sorry. Please grind courier missions with our friends the Thukkers for a few years before we offer you work."
A more RP and workable way to go: "We don't believe you've turned yet. So we'll ask for a deposit of 10 million ISK if you want to fly this janitor over --> there." Faction standings could be used to reduce the size of this deposit (call it 10M for a L1, 50M for a L2, 250M for a L3 and L5, and 1B for a L4), just like reprocessing taxes are reduced to 0 by standings today.

Did CCP really think LvL 5 missions are the cookies that will bring mission runners to low security? I don't see how they could. CCP would have to know that mission runners experienced enough to attempt LvL 5 missions are going to realize that bringing an expensive PvE setup into systems where you can easily get owned by PvP setup pirates is not smart.

lv5's are pretty worthless in general. They are dangerous in low sec, they don't pay that well, they make you lose a chunk of faction standing, and instead of bounty, they tend to yield lots of useless tags that you need to go collect in a salvage ship (more danger) that is just too much of a pain in the ass to be worth it.

Especially when they're already getting ganked in high-sec.
