Well? What are you?
I'm talking about ship skills of course. Do you stick to 1 or 2 races and forget the rest or do you invest in everyone?
I'm a new pilot but I can already see that ship piloting skills build on eachother. To fly cruisers you must have frigates at a certain lvl, to fly BS you must.....
Now I currently have the Gellente frigate and Caldari frigate skills. As I'm preparing to get my first cruiser I'm wondering whether I should go ahaead and buy/train the other races frigate ship skills. I would h8 to come to the top of the ship ladder and realize my dream BS is in another race, requiring weeks upon weeks of training to fly.
Any advice?

Edited by: Andrew Jade on 05/04/2004 19:20:10 I started out and power gamed so trained for the ship which best did the job i wanted. So i trained minmatar frigates for the probe. Then gallente cruisers for the thorax and then amarr BS for the Apoc. As you can guess i was a miner to start with.
However now i stick solely to my race ships. It has obvious disadvantages but imo its far more fun to play with your races ships and conquer the obstacles. I love RPing in EVE now i do. Having funny conversations with non RPing amarrians etc is fun and contiunues to the ships. Refusing to piloy certain ships due to them being an insult is always a good laugh.
Of course having Amarr and Gallante BS skills to lvl4 are a waste of skills now, but oh well, im enjoying my tempest. Minmatar BS 5 training soon
So anyway, you have to decide really if you want to be the best in the game, or have fun in the game. From my own experiance RPing on the ship issue is a lot of fun. Also the time you spent training other races ships you could have spent on your own race. I would be almost halfway to minmatar BS5 if i hadnt have trained the other races.
So in my oppinion its better sticking with your race.
So yes im a ship racist, bloody amarrian scum

Minmatar forever! I stick solely to Min ships of course.
Whilst sticking to one races ships does have its disadvantages it does let you put the saved skill points into using the ships more effectively.
I know there are people out there who can fly every ship of every race, and probably have battleship to level 4 for every race, but if you think about it thats 3 x lvl 4 frigate, 3 x lvl 4 cruiser, 3 x lvl battleship (plus probably same again for indies) that, in a particular battle, are going to waste. Thats a helluva lot of skill points that could go to improving gunnery/navigation etc. IN sticking to one race effectively you are trading flexibility of ship usage for better use of a particular races ships.

well i can see your racist points and fully understand em, but ya never know which curve ball nerf ccp is gonna throw at ya so im workin up all 4 races in ships and the 3 types of weapons. lots of wasted skill pts? its not as bad as i imagined it would be but then again i havent gotten em to the high lvls either.

Been a miner since start, was thinking off going for apoc but when I saw the ammount off time it would take to get 2 more miner lasers I decided NOT to go for it.
I'm all for the "stick with your race and RP a bit" thing. U have been born as a minmatar, do have some honour and die as a minmatar :)
Second reason was that I wanted to keep up with my corp mates since most off them have been playing 5-6 months when I reached my first cruiser :) I've put all those "would-be" ship points into usefull navigation/engineering/electronics points

PIE is, I believe, the only Corporation in the game which maintains a strict 'no-fly' rule when it comes to crappy foreign ships
All our members are restricted to just Amarrian ships so only need to train Amarrian ship skills... thankfully they are good all rounders.
What this means is that we have more time to train other skills up which allows us to do our holy duty combating Minmatar terrorists and other threats to the Amarr Empire all the more effectively...

I think minimar and ammar players are racists and caldari and gallente pilots are open minded.
Hehe.
Just a little observation but the Caldari I know switch ships all the time. We're a very versitile people. Minimar and Ammar on the other hand, seem to be stuck to their own ships.

*cough* so are we mate. Though not large or not even close to being well known as you, we limit ourselves to minmatar ships. Its a policy we stick to because we want to and also its more of a challenge.
We have no intention of allowing any other ships, even though Blackbirds and scorps would be very usefull. Whats the fun in having the different races if you use all the ships.

The Amarrian tyranny will be brought to its knees through action rather than words. Do not trust the Amarrian to keep his word. Fight the Amarrian where he stands. Stand against them, never surrender, fight untill the last, fight untill you hold the emperors heart in your hands.

And of course as a true Min, you'd only use projectiles out of the turrets which save you the skills points for small/medium/large hybrids & energy weapons + controlled bursts.
All in with the skills saved from above and ships, thats a lot of skill points saved.

Edited by: Zen Jakkaru on 07/04/2004 00:30:56 Amarrian here, my ship skills will look as folowed:
Minmatar Frigate V Minmatar Cruiser IV Minmatar Battleship V Interceptor V (Bomber skill?) (Black Ops skill?)
Lets face it - why build your own ships when you have slaves to do it for you? If that means i'm flying inferior heaps of scrapmetal, so be it!I'm a lazy Amarrian and proud of it!!
Now hop along before i enslave your mom.

Hehe, I haven't met a Minmatar or Ammarian yet who wasn't some sort of roleplaying nutty.
I think they know that in the end Caldari kick everyone's butt, so they just pick at eachother with RP.

Much respect for the folks who stick to "racial" ships, that's very admirable.
However, I must admit I ain't one of them. I trained up to Thorax because it's such a good miner, but the only races I have ship skills for are Minmatar and Gallente. I figure it's justifiable RP because of the close ties there ... I used to think I'd never fight in a Gallente ship, but some of the lesser used ships really intrigue me.

Racist, Minmatar ships only, although I do occasionally use other weapon types than projectile.
we at the PFM have a reasonably strict stance on our members using other race ships, we only allow Gallente ships in a non-combatant role usually, and this does cause a few problems, even down to people leaving as they wanted to try out other ships.
the only thing I can suggest is pick a path and follow it, if you realise you screwed up, then either fix the problem, or restart a new character. If you pick the right path in the first place, you might not ever pilot a BS, but you might be even happier in something smaller, I've actually stopped using my BS, and loaned it out, and I'm having more fun now than ever

I am Caldari and from my point of view a ship is like an offer, you always take the best. It is an investment of time an money for sure but I am sure the payout will be worth it. But there are spaceships I wont fly for some reasons, for example all of the amarrians, cause I cannot trust a ship that is assembled by slaves who hold grudges for their masters. Would you build a proper spaceship for someone who enslaves you? I wouldn't for sure and we don't even know if the amarrians aren't too lazy to design the ships by themselves anyway. The Minmatar will do their best to build long lasting and capable ships to defend their freedom. The Gallente will build good ships cause they want to enjoy the life after the fight. The Caldari will build awesome ships anyway, cause they would have to pay alot of money if they don't and people go to court. The Amarrians are to lazy to build ships themselves and have slaves do the work. I think there is a good point to never trust an Amarrian, casue you will never know if you will be in slavery after you dealt with one. Who knows if there is a secret return pattern implemented into the ships that will set a course to Amarr space when you are asleep. You will wake up perfectly fine chipped up and you will be another happy slave.

I tend to fly mainly Caldari ships, with a few exeptions. The lack of a decent Caldari mining ships has lead me to train for the Maller, which has more turrets than any Caldari ship. I use it only for mining though. I can also fly Minmatar Cruisers, which I trained because I kinda like the Rupture.
I'm not roleplaying (although my character feels the same way ) when I say I will never fly the butt-ugly Thorax. That's a promise. I also have no need to train other races' Industrial ship skills, so I won't. I might train Gallante ships up to Battleship-level one day, since I kinda like the Megathron and there is no decent Caldari gunship out there. I'm a turret fan of sorts, at least untill they fix the damn missiles.
All-in-all, I'm more racist than "most" Caldari and Gallanteans, but more open minded than "most" Amarr and Minmatar.

I have chosen minmitar as race and will only fly minmitar ships. I will not learn any other race class ship etc as i think they are lowly forms of our human existance.
This way i become a skilled minmitar pilot

I only fly Minmatar ships as an RP thing. But I have no qualms about using the best weapons for the job. Of course, considering that Minmatar ships all come stock with Projectile Turret bonuses (except for a couple of frigates) I mostly stick to projectile cannons. But I can use all the different types of weapons, it is more fun to be versatile...
