I'm just about to get my first cruiser. I was wondering what would be a good fitting for my new Moa.
Things to keep in mind: 1. I am a new player. I have been playing for less than a month. 2. I am trying to specialize in gunnery. I like railguns. 3. I have limited funds. 4. I want to do PvE for right now. I am running level 2 missions. 5. I am not an expert on modules. Explain why the fitting would work.
As a side question: Is "ratting" hunting pirates in asteroid fields? -- I am for noob friendly posts. And I am against stupidity.

'Ratting' is hunting NPC's in belts/gates, not players. Getting players in belts is usually referred to as 'ganking', even if that implies more then just that. __________________________________________________________________ ل Don't worry about your beard, when your head is about to be taken لل لللللللللللللللللللللللللللللل- Sun Tzu, The art of War - |

not wishing to derail your thread but if you want to run level 2's a Caracal is a much better choice for the newer player...really truly!
with low skill points rail guns really suck...they are not high dps in any way and if you don't have the skills to support the range...RoF...and tracking you'll spend hours trying to kills all the frigs whizzing around you in level 2's
the other problem is of course is fitting req's on rail guns. Untill youve trained your fitting skills up high enough putting a full rack of rails on the moa will be a huge pain in the arse if you want any kind of tank forcing you to use lower teir guns gimping your already low dps and effective range.
I know it sucks...I, like you, was keen to give rails a real try..but alas until you have the skill points the Moa will disappoint you...it did me.
All is not lost!
If you keep concentrating on your gunnery skills you will reach a threshold where suddenly rail guns start to work ...then you can go back to the Moa warp into a mission pocket at 50ks and insta pop every frig there
once you get here fitting a mission Moa will be pretty obvious 5 highest teir med rails magnetic feild stabilizers in the lows and tank in the middle ,,,tracking comp if you feel saucy.
the rest is trial and error
until then spend a week to train basic heavy missile skills and profit!

When I was around 1-2 months old in game (started before the 800k skillpoint thing mind you). I used to run missions in a rail osprey of all ships... Yes, you can laugh at me... but I didn't like the caracal much at the time.
You may need to carry a ton of ammo, but it isn't all that hard to do to run missions with rails if you set yourself up right. I'd have to play around with EFT or pick up a Moa to think of a good example setup, which I can't do atm. But overall a Moa is a great ship, and can be setup to tank lowsec sentries if you have cruiser trained high enough, heh.
Heavy missiles at level 2 or 3 wouldn't take long and you will be able to run missions fairly easy (not having to worry about learning the tracking and transversal parts of being a turret user.) But a web and a good setup and you can stick with gunnery and never train missiles at all... and I know quite a few who successfully did it, even if it took a little longer overall before they hit the same level as a missile user. ------------

Rails all the way dude, stick with the moa. the caldari rails boats are getting another turret so they'll be even better than what i had, and i loved my railboast all the way up to rokh, i'll finish any lv4 faster than any raven that isnt faction/officer fit. If you need alil extra isk to buy this fit come run some missions with me, i make about 20-30 mill per lv4 and they take about 20 mins each. I can always use alil frig control or someone to salvage after missions. And if you start running with me i'll give you the faction ammo to burn.

See the previous post for a good setup. However, as previous posters has pointed out, if you like hybrid turrets you might be better of to train for gallente.
Caldari is the missile race. Caracal works best for level 2, drake is awesome for level 3 and raven/cnr is very good and skill friendly for level 4.

Edited by: Omarvelous on 05/03/2008 15:56:10 Give this a shot (as your skills improve you can swap the tech 1 gear for tech 2 gear):
Use best named you can afford or tech 2.
Low: - 3x Magnetic Field Stabilizer - Power Diagnostic Unit
Mid: - 2x Passive Racial Resist amps (so like vs Guristas - Kinetic and Thermal) - Invulnerability Field (can swap for a web vs interceptor enemies in missions) - Large Shield Extender
High: - 4x 200mm railgun (you'll still have the range to hit all the targets in mission - but you track better than 250 rails, plus you don't need as many fitting mods, which gives you room for damage mods). - 2x Assault Missile Launcher
Drones: 3x light racial drones
Antimatter for enemies that get within ~25km (a web for those interceptor frigates that orbit and web you - if you web them, they will go slow enough for your rail guns to hit them).
Lead for midrange ~40 km
Iron for Long range ~60 km
Assault missile launcher closely meshes up tot he railgun's ranges - use it for extra dps, and to deal with those fast close orbiting frigates. Use your drones to augment the missiles in this task.
You don't have to use a Caracal - its fun to be different and use something else besides missiles to run missions. Plus you won't have to worry too much about defender missiles blowing up your shots before they hit!
Gunnery takes time and patience, but it pays off with superior firepower, when you can meet its optimal conditions (minimize enemy transversal speed, keep it within optimal range).
A 5th turret is due out soon - I would keep this setup and swap out 1 missile launcher for a gun for more long range damage! __________________________________________________ Sup brosef! Destry's Lounge is looking for a few good drunks - contact me in game.

i know u want 2 spec in guns u like rails, but caracal is so much better for pve, that said i like my moa with over 100km sniping range, but a harpy can match this, id go with....

id go with something similar to this, but remove rigs, and faction ammo adn to start with u will prb have 2 t1 everything, but t2 it when possible

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 06/03/2008 10:09:26 The Caracal is pretty awesome I have to say.
Missiles are so much less involved than guns.
They carry their full DPS out to their max range. No tracking (an issue if you're shooting frigs), no falloff, no different ranged ammo.
Furthermore the Caracal actually gets a damage bonus as well as it's range bonus.
The Moa I tried for missions and just found a bit lacklustre damage wise once tracking (misses or near misses really reduce your efficiency) and ranged ammo was factored in. Maybe it's better with the 5 turrets if you've got good gun skills and are using shorter ranged ammo.
One tip I would give is to use second best named equipment, so numbered missile launchers instead of arbalests, compressed coil guns instead of prototypes. The price / performance curve is not straight. You do pay a price premium for "best". EVE RELATED CONTENT |

However the Moa (and all Caldari railboats) has a 5%/level shield resistance bonus, meaning it has a much better tank. I never managed to keep a caracal alive for very long.
I now run L4 missions in an Eagle, the Moa's bigger brother. It has T2 shield resistances, PLUS 5%/level shield resistances, so it's close to impenetrable. Fitting a couple of kinetic hardeners gives it 95% resistance vs guristas (kinetic). An EM and an Invuln gives it powerful all-round resistances (all 80-90%). You have to fit shorter-range ammo to do enough damage, but that's the price you pay for invulnerability.

Yeah.
With Cruiser 5 and two T2 hardeners I can get 85-89% on one resist. That's not bad for a T1 ship I guess.
Still prefer missiles. EVE RELATED CONTENT |
