I am really enjoying Eve but I am thinking of visiting these forums much less.
Agreed.
Huge piles of whinage on these boards. Instead of exploring in-game solutions in keeping with EVE realism, the vocal few choose to waste time by venting, in hopes to marshall support.
Your idea about visiting these forums less might be a good one, in any case.

Originally by: Khyara After playing EVE for this long, Ive come to the conclusion that it really doesnt matter. Pick something you'd like to do, get to the point where you think you can do it well, and then move to something else that interests you. Ignore how many other ships other people can fly and how much money they have, it isnt worth it if your constantly comparing your epeen to someone elses.

If there isn't a level playing field... then how come vets lose their ships?

Here's the thing, in that new server, guess what would develop over time? The same kind of things you're talking about, once people get old enough, if not sooner.
Bottom line is that everyone must adapt themselves to EVE, rather than trying to adapt the game to the way they play. If you can tough it out and get to a point where you know what you're doing, chances are you'll be able to hack EVE long-term, so in that way its sort of a weeding out feature of the game, only the strongest or smartest survive.

Because we do stupid things like engaging a punisher on a gate in a crow, within web range. Or taking on two frigates that look like noobs in a claw and again, in web range... dying like an idiot.
Yes, I've banned myself from flying inties for anything other than scouting/pointing large ships ------------

Pretty straightforward and once I learned these 3 simple rules I've had a lot of fun. I don't worry about people having more skills than me. I accept the fact that my death is inevitable. I've learned to be wary of even the most benign discussions.
Just my 2 isk from a new pilot who thinks a lot of these people need to get over it.
You, sir, will make it very far in this game! Its new players like you that make me happy and give me hope for the future ------------------------------------------------------------------

hmmm i don't remember being harassed by older players.
maybe thats because i didn't join a crappy corp that folds to a random wardec, go into lowsec, or steal from random cans

Why is a newbie even talking about emerging patterns?
First, losses are relative. A vet might lose more in a single pod than you would in a month of combat in t1 junk. And the reason you can't compete, is because you're a dirty newbie who doesn't know the game yet.
I laugh at people who overlook the fact that it's usually experience that lets older players gain the upper hand. You're essentially whining about something that's been brought up consistently for more than half a decade.
EVE's flagship feature is the skill system, and the reason so many people play it. The game won't die because you think competition involves skillpoints. Skillpoints are a tiebreaker only when two people are evenly matched in a dozen other areas.
If I were to start my own corp today for the purpose of chatting and relaxation, I would invite high-sp people I've known a long time. They're likely to have the same knowledge and experience as me.
If I wanted to get things done, I'd recruit people barely one year old just because they have newbie enthusiasm. I don't have to convince them how much fun it will be, or console them after every loss. _______________________________ http://epicwords.net/ |

Good luck with that after they get past the 5th month.

I will skip all the taunting as thats more a game killer for new players than the getting killed. Folks are cool with playing games but far less so with tolerating people acting like a horses' rear end.
Anyway....I do disagree with the OP, because when I was a brand new player (which was just over a year ago) I was not hassled at all, in fact it seems to me a new player has to go OUT OF THEIR WAY to get hassled.
Its been my experience that the people who make a scene in local are the source of the problem, that is they pitched a fit when their Velator got blown up ebcause they opened someone else's can, and got made fun of when they went off on their rant in local.
Its from people whom I guess cannot read the warning windows that pop up by default when performing a dangerous action in high-sec that seem to complain the most.
By and large, you cannot get hassled in high-sec unless you invite it, and you invite hassling by doinbg certain things like solo-jet can mining, opening up cans marked in yellow, having verbal diarrhea in local, or acting like you are some kind of god when your avatar is only 3 days old.
Its when you KEEP doing those same things over and over and fail to recognize those actions have consequences..and there people is the crux of the issue.
Unlike other MMOs, and just like R/L....your actions in EvE have CONSEQUENCES, for good or for bad and unlike other games, in EvE you are NOT free to be a jerk (unless you and your corp can back up your overflowing mouth).
Frankly I find it easy to avoid hassles, you just have to be aware of your environment, and not wander around in a mental fog and that is why so many cannot hack EvE, this game requires that you understand what you are doing, who you are doing it to, and what repercussions may come from it. Its not hack and slash mobs with impunity like most other MMOs.
If you adopt a mentality of cause and effect, of situational awareness, and of diplomacy, you can go far in EvE and you will understand the game mechanisims a lot better.

I was flying to 0.0 for chits & giggles, and to figure out how to make boosters, I wanted to use the hard narcotix. Anywho, as I came out of the gate, someone was coming to it but didn't jump. I got caught in their warp scrambler [warp stopper], decided to just go forward, got nuked and pk'd [pod killed]. I didn't care that I lost my rookie ship or that I was blown into next issue. Even though I was like yeah-yeah, just f'in pop me already, it was quite fun. He didn't hold me ransom...wouldn't have been able to pay being on a trial [afaiknew]. I'm prob just rambling on but I haven't slept and have taken like 13 Percocet all night. It was a fun experience that I want to pursue.
