Point taken. Though I'd still like to see "highways" -- not necessarily the way they are implemented now, but in a smarter fashion. Rather than direct links between, say, Yulai and Amarr, I'd rather see a "line" of gates that connect through the region (with hubs along the way), that then connect at the ends to another region's highway. I'm not wedded to the current concept, but I do think that every regional "hub" system (Lumainaire, New Caldari, Nonni, Yulai, Amarr, Tash-Murkon Prime, etc) should not be more than 5 or 6 jumps from each other.
I honestly believe that people will buy things out in those harder-to-get-to systems simply because they are too lazy to travel into the hub systems.
I agree that if the highways stay they really need to be tweaked, and should really not be the silly one jump to another region. I have been guilty of jumping the one jump just to check the prices of another region and seeing they are incredibly cheaper I will go there. The problem is that because there is not regional economy the entire Eve economy is forced down. I think that it is great to have the big cities of Eve. However I do not think that all of the large cities of EVE should be so directly connected that they are more like districts of one ultimately larger city. Paris is very different from london, which is very different from moscow, which is very different from New York because they are seperate and able to form their own cultures, economies etc. I'd suggest at least 5-10 jumps between each of the large cities of Eve. I find it distressing that a game with one of the most advanced market systems out there (despite its bugs) essentially ends up becoming much like other MMORPG's, which is to say one large selling area, and everybody in one chat/market screaming buy my stuff, it's in Yulai.
To sum up my opinion. No we can't take out the highways completely because yes travel times across Eve then become a bit excessive. Yes I've played for a long time and I know that sometimes it's worth it, but it kills the enjoyment of the game to travel more than play. At the same time it is important to make sure that these travel means don't turn the diverse empires of Eve into one large conglomerate as it is becoming.
Side Note: Yes you have to listen to new people, but that wasn't the point when mentioning that new people don't know what's been lost. What the point was is that there is an element that has been taken away that is worth putting back even for the newer people. Eve is nowhere near the perilous edge of stagnation and pleasing older players. It's been in continual change, and CCP has had no problem denieing our plethora of silly, absurd, and often inane ideas. If you are new and want to know what it was like before the highways talk to an older player and see what they can tell you. Maybe you too will lobby for a "change" to the highways.
