The Blockade is one of the hardest lvl 3 missions but it's pretty formulaic unless you happen to get one where the triggers are random (can happen). If you don't move from your warp-in point then the new spawns come from upwards of 40-70km away, so plenty of time to get away.
With T1 stuff and low skills you might want to avoid the tougher level 3s, as you say the payout was a big clue.
Is your Drake rigged? This makes a huge difference in tanking.

I wasn't having much trouble tanking the damage up until I inadvertently triggered two waves at once, but what was really troublesome was that it took sooooooooo long to kill any of them. Actually, just the Dire ones were really bad, the others were more of a minor annoyance. Guess I need to work on the missile skills a bit instead of worrying about tanking more.
Unless I'm mistaken the Dire variants of the ships are assault ships so have high resists. I normally stick my drones on those ships because missiles tend to do so little damage to them.

Edited by: Durzel on 09/03/2008 10:59:00 Drones are vital. The sooner you can get the skills up the better, doesn't necessarily have to be T2 (Scout Drone Operation V) but you should aim for it.
There are some L3 missions where you will come up against spider drones and other assorted tiny nasties and without very good missile support skills you simply won't do any real damage to them. If they happen to be the ones webbing/scramming you (which is often the case) then quite simply - you are screwed.
Get yourself 5 Hobgoblin Is as soon as you have the skills for them, you'll find them make quite a difference. I actually find that with the Drake that with sufficient drone skills they're as much a part of your relied-upon DPS as your missiles are.
Incidentally, 3 Core Defence Purger Rigs makes L3s trivial in terms of tanking ability, but having said that because of the issues you will have hitting small targets I'd hold off buying them until you can comfortably afford them and have skilled up a bit more (you need skills just to fit the rigs incidentally).

I don't understand why people often come into threads and start suggesting ships that require even higher skills to do the same missions.
Sure, a Caracal can probably do L3 missions - but comfortably? By someone who has already admitted to having low-skills (not T2) and no drone skills? Yeah, good luck with that.
A Drake is a great tool for L3s, you can tank it like mad and whilst you might not be able to complete the missions due to low DPS it's a far better prospect than trying L3s in a Caracal or some other ship that requires multi-million SP to handle the mission.
I had some people telling me I could do L2s in a Destroyer - which is true - but the difficulty and micro-management required made it totally counter-productive, not to mention the DPS as compared to a cruiser (the CORRECT tool for the job) just meant it was an exercise in e-peen rather than effective missioning. No one cares that you can run L3s in Caracal or L2s in a Frigate.
To the OP - once again I would recommended getting your skills up to fit T2 Large Shield Extenders, T2 Hardeners (or Invulnerability Fields) and of course Drones. You should be far more effective then.
