I find some of those popups entertaining when I'm waiting for it to finish logging in. (Like that one for valentine's day last year)

Those of you attacking the OP need to lighten up and get off the forums.
You see, this kind of post is called feedback and is something any company worth it's salt loves to get. You know, actual information from a customer about their feelings towards the company, their marketing, etc. Many companies pay a lot of money to survey companies to find out this kind of thing. MMORPG companies get a free stream of it every day!
As for the topic, I too hate the pop-up windows. Modal windows are always bad and modal windows that are adverts are the worst. One of the alliance tournament ones popped up for me when I was in the middle of a very tense and frantic 10 v 10 fight. Really bad timing. Did it make me want to watch the alliance tournament? Hell no, it made me want to punch whoever decided to make that pop-up appear right then in the face. Not a good marketing tactic. ________________________________________________________________

Not exactly true, this feedback is from an irate customer a borderline case at best, it's rarely any indication about your customer base feelings to listen to the quick to anger ones.
What companies pay to get is a wide array of opinions that take in everything the customer base has to say.
I agree on the in game modal pop up though, it should not be so intrusive and definetly not modal. But I think anyone will notice that valid complaint in the OP's post due to his high level of irritation towards the much more benign adverts in the login window.

Edited by: Bin Matar on 11/03/2008 07:51:35 You dont have to interact with the ad in any way and its there for the 10 seconds it takes you to login to the client.
Its entirely EvE related items so relevant to the game.
If i was getting Blockbuster ads it would be a different story but it isnt, If you find advertising at this level offensive then i dont really think your cut out for life in the modern world.
Quote: And please note: I make it a point to NOT buy anything pushed to me in offensive ways, and pop up ads on my game client rates about a 10/10 in offending me. So I will not be purchasing EON, or the Eve Strategic maps, stuff I might well have bought if I'd not been subjected to "captive marketing".
Im sure there are quite a few ppl who avoid these forums due to posters like you who only found out about EON due to the client splash.
Quote: And another thing, unless it's truly system related please avoid system messages in game as much as possible. I and everyone else knew the alliance tourney was going on, no need to do something like INTERRUPT MY IN GAME PLAY to tell me what I already knew. Telling me that Jita has crashed= something I may not know of and may need to know. Telling me that a tourney is on that has only been hyped all over the news and website for months = something I ALREADY knew and didn't need to be interrupted for.
Unfortunately this is quite annoying and you may have looked like less of a tightass if you had made it the focus of your whine but still at the end of the day its one click on the mouse to get rid of it.

I'm going to contradict my earlier posts on this part of the subject.
That part in bold is why. One click of the mouse is the difference between a tackler living or dying, pointing a mom in lowsec blah blah. But yeah, fighting close to downtime and missing a point/dying horribly gets on my nerves when those warnings pop up and I can't do anything but try to find the enter key or click the button. Really freaking annoying ------------

I have no idea why you feel like you have to close the login-screen Ad before you log-in. It's completely unneccesary since you can just enter your login details and ignore it.
However, whichever GMs it is who likes to pop out system messages about Jita being full or alliance tournaments starting every damn hour should seriously just go and get really really drunk on bad beer and stay home from work for a couple of weeks!

Yes, each individual add pops up once but they are becomming more frequent, so its not someone whining about a once off advert, its about constant stream of 'once off' adverts.

OK, here's a screenshot of the login box as it appeared just today with the ad.
http://img379.imageshack.us/my.php?image=eveadjd4.jpg
Now, the services being advertised are eve-related, but not CCP-affiliated (Eve Files). Looks like you can buy advertising space on that login page.
But, it's definitely not obscuring the login box. OP is wrong on that count.
Also, since CCP is so touchy with the forum word filter, why is it OK to have the word "crap" on an ad that every Eve player will see? |

OP is an idiot.
The ads in no way affect your ability to log in. They don't have to be closed to be able to put in your password... you don't even have to look at them.
About the only thing you can whine about is that it blocks your view of the EVE logo. And I'm sure that's really quite traumatic and all...

Anal retentive people, FTL.
Seriously, its not like these ad have to do with products unrelated to Eve-Online. If that were the case, your argument might be valid. As far as I am concerned, those ads that are about OTHER Eve products and events, are very welcome. It tells me that there is much more to this game than the game itself. This is why we become fans of particular games. It is not only the game itself, but the community, events, and products that rise up around the game.
You simply have no valid excuse for complaining about having to click an extra button when you log on. Don't try to come here and pretend that this is a cause of problems in your life. If this is all you have to worry about in your own little world, maybe someone needs to arm you with a gun, put you in a war zone, and maybe then you'll discover what having real problems in real life actually means.
Do not assume (it just makes you look like an ass) that everybody knows what you know. Again, the in-game messaging about the tournament was a welcome notification. Yeah, I knew about it but I'm sure thousands of other players didn't know about it. Not everybody who plays this game bothers to read the news or come to this web site...especially if they are new players. Again, this tournament is a vital part of the Eve-Online community. I simply cannot, for the life of me, understand why this would bother someone. Seriously, get a life.

My guess: the original poster is using some extremely low resolution (maybe a handheld computer with 600x200 or something) and the ad really does block his login area? If so, then next patch will remove the problem since patch notes state that the minimum resolution will be 1024x768 -> problem solved (very small computers will simply stop running Eve).

Psht, it's a good idea. I didn't hear of EVE maps without it. I like EVE Files, Chribba puts in hard work and deserves a bit of limelight. EVE Info, yeah, it's pretty useful, I use it lots for sure. E-On magazine, I'm fairly sure CCP is well within it's right to advertise that.
It's not like they put up a "Hey hot singles, click here" ad.
Bloody hell, I went into a shed one day and saw something which perfectly describes what the OP should do. It was a bag of cement with a tap at the bottom. On the bag was written "Turn this on to harden the **** up"

I agree the pop ups are a bother. (This is the third or fourth post I've seen on this topic in the last week or so)
My recommendation, which I believe is reasonable, is to give the player (who is paying a subscription) a graphics option to block the ads.
Those who want to see them can. Those who don't, won't.

Or shoe shopping with your wife.

I object to them on my game client for the same reason why I use a browser (Firefox+Adblock) to prevent being assaulted by them on the web: I don't want anything obstructing what I want to do.
Your pop ups have to be clicked on (ie: looked at) in order to get to the client login.
Except none of this is actually true, you don't have to click anything, just login as normal.

You know what impresses me,
People pay $20 for a new DVD realease and they get forced adds you cannot skip (Unless you play it on a PC) no complaints.
People pay $10 or more to see a movie and get 10-20 minutes of adds (Heck some places have adds before the movie promos start) no complaints.
People pay $69.99 for a brand new PC game only to see blatant advertising by Intel Nvidia and whatever else the company wants to advertise (Some also have blatant ingame advertising) no real complaints.
But give people a Forum and they will whine about the same darn things they put up with from anything else.
Regards,
Kahrek Laume.
P.S. Before someone brings up the argument of recurring fee content i would like to point out advertising on subscription TV channels and other such venues, some are specificaly advertised as add free (Which ironicaly enough is an ad in and of itself)
