Just curious and relatively new to the game . . .
Has every patch been as bad as this one, or is this a one-off? And by "bad" I don't mean "such and such was nerfed" or "they changed this thing I liked," I mean, "interface going berserk" and "crashing like a mofo."

this patch is really not bad at all. they always screw up overview settings and break random parts of the interface (and then take 3-6 months to fix them) but at least the server isn't crashing constantly. Please visit your user settings to re-enable images. |

ussually it goes pretty well, but lately(last 4-5 patches), its been all over the place, with each patch taking longer than expected and there ussually beign a extended downtime a few days after to fix a few flaws.
but theyre doing theyre best, and most of the time youll have some notice before extended downtimes.
its just been an unlucky streak i guess, but most of us still have confidence in ccp to get it back together sometime soon
ps. i think it might also have something to do with the new trinity engine, its always hard to code in a newer engine that you dont have that much experience in, as time goes by it'll get better.

Eve patches are always 'bad' relative to other MMOGs for two reasons. One, the UI is extremely complicated compared to your average online game...lots of functionality means lots of room for bugs. Second, Eve has major patches that with most other games would be sold as an expansion pack, or made into a new version of the game (eve:trinity is basically eve 3.0 but ccp doesnt believe in forcing sequels/expansions on subscribers). _________________ [IMAGE REMOVED] -- aka Cpt Bogus -- Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Yes, but one has to take these sorts of problems into account.
Is it better to have an unstable game where things works as they should, or a stable game wherein things are suddenly broken?
I'm not sure if one or the other is preferable.

Ironically, this is one of the better patches in a while, in terms of "interface going berserk" and "crashing like a mofo." Sad, really. ---

Not having any problems here.
Vista 1280 x 1024 on both desktop and game res. Full Screen
I run classic, low graphics for performance if I know I am going to be running multiple accounts. Super high, as jacked up as I can get it when I know Ioci is running solo.
The only time I get UI issues is when I switch between window and fullscreen or mess with resolution sizes. |

People only notice when things go wrong. Rarely a post when everything goes right.
There was a small patch not that long ago that, judging by forums, no one even noticed.

Patch days are like package family holidays;
First everyone gets excited. Then, during the packing, everyone realises how much work is involved. During the holiday itself everyone fights with each other because they want to do different things. Finally, once the holiday is over, everyone comes back exhausted and wishes they'd never bothered going in the first place. Oh, and then there's the unpacking to do.

This one was pretty smooth.
The problem CCP faces compared to for example Blizzard is that their production enviroment can't be cloned easy. For example Blizzard can test stuff on test servers identical to production servers, CCP has a test system that isn't nearly as complicated as the main servers (eve uses a lot of clustering, so multiple servers connected to each other). --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

This patch was one of the better ones (regarding the problems, not the changes).
What happens every time is that obvious bugs that affect most people and should never have made it through QA are introduced and it takes months until they get fixed.
Some bugs introduced in Revelations (November 2006) haven't been fixed yet and they are easy to reproduce and affect everyone (e.g. the wrong standings icon for guests in stations that log on).

Poor fanboi excuse. This may affect some of the more complicated bugs, but the majority of bugs (both regarding visibility and number of people affected) have nothing to do with clustering and the server setup, they affect even single players on Sisi. Among these are the countless obvious UI bugs etc.

Yes its always bad and sometimes ALOT worse. If you plan to stick with the game get use to it.
And the fact you see people replying "this one wasnt that bad" should tell you all you need to know.

You still have your boot.ini file, right? Then this was by definition a decent patch. :)
Ok, easy shots asside, ALL games have post patch issues. WoW, FFXI, EQ 1 and 2, everyone of them have some problems after a patch.
Eve does tend to be on the bad side though. The best thing you can do is lower your expectations a bit.
If they say the server will be down for 12 hours, expect it to be down for 24. And hey if it IS down for 12, you feel like you get a bonus.
Expect things to be screwy for one to five days afterwards. The Trinity patch made POS's undefendable, Jump Clones unusable and deleted your boot.ini file. I think all the major bugs were fixed within a week.
Should this be the case? Ideally, no, but it is the reality of things. So, take a deep breath and relax. The major bugs will be fixed shortly. Hopefully. :) Adapt more, whine less. |

Personally I think CCP's Quality Assurance and testing needs a serious review. This patch has proven to be a lot worse than most, but since the RMR patch most patch's I remember have come with problems that should have be spotted and fixed.
Im not saying that CCP = Fail or that everything should always go smoothly but surely this isnt good and it could do with some scrutiny to see if theres anything that can be done to help things. Perhaps the player base can help out by doing more structured testing.
The hardest thing in making suggestions for improvement is the lack of actual real information on what the problems are and the hardware TQ runs on. The most common report is "Database problem" which given the massive amount of data for this game is fair enough but details would be nice.
The quality of the service alerts. The ones on the game are quite clear thats good, the ones on the website arnt so obvious and often get knocked off and sometimes just dont get displayed at all.
The time between responses really is poor as well. 4pm on patch day things wernt up and there was a message about issue. It said to check the website (but there was no info about it there, only on the MOTD). So I left it 5 hours and came back, still same message on the MOTD, and still no message (not even a copy of the MOTD) on the website. I work in an industry where SLA's are very very important, even if we have no new information for customer we let them know its being worked on and a estimated resolution time. This stops people thinking and feeling in the dark and stops people coming back every 10 mins to see if theres been any update. Even a message saying its all still broke they are restoring some data from backups and its taking a while, next update in 5 hours would be much better than the way it was currently handled.

Hi,
In my experience, most patches are appalling.
The QA department must just be non-existent. I only have to play the game a few hours after a patch and find loads of stuff.
There is normally a few days of lag & crashing after most patches.
And CCPs communication to the user base is pretty bad also, during & after the patches.

And this extended downtime to fix some Missions.... think of the PVP'ers CCP... we don't give a damn about a mission... put the server online! ------------

This patch has been veritably balmy (like a balmy beach in the bahamas)
the odd hiccup, but at least eve worked when it came back up, and so did my pc :) (tho i feel sorry for the 10fps'ers who might disagree with me :( )
