What was it like in the old days, when the pop was still pretty low? I'm not talking bugs or exploits, or lack of missioning content, or low skills. I mean day to day lifestyle stuff. I hear you could travel for days and not see anyone, was this true?

In deep 0.0 you could travel 20 jumps and not see a soul. On this account (which goes back to only 2006) there were more people out there, but the atmosphere was still pretty friendly and neutrals would chat with you in local as you were the first person they'd seen all day. Sadly, these days everyone is obsessed with EFT, killboards, and secrecy. These things kind of ruin the magic that brought me here in the first place.
But still we soldier on trying to improve our skills and be the best we can. ________

People did not go to 0.0 mainly due to lack of security. There was no Outposts or Poses.
Regions like Venal, Delve, and stain were very important to control due to their multiple NPC Stations. Were some regions without NPCs had conquerable stations that you can take over simply by shooting at it with a 20 man fleet half the day. (No sovreignty, everything was pretty much fast track.
Mining or ratting ops in 0.0 were less risky the further you went, Cargo containers were the POS those days. With no probes about it wasn't hard to sit in a ss to hide from someone.
Hardest part of it all were the 0.0 entrances, Systems like hed and ec- were camped most of the time. Making getting your precious loot out of the big black a risky business. Even reskier when deployable bubbles got introduced into the game.
If you take a good look at all the major patches and thier features, you will have a pretty good idea how eve has evolved. Old videos and combat thread will reveal more about 0.0 in those days.
The days were setting one foot in 0.0 in a noob frig, meant that you have big BALLS.

I liked it better back in '03. Fewer people in low sec, it was still dangerous but not crawling with gankers. You could live in .4-.1 quite easily, with just some basic precautions. People seemed more civilized in the game.
There was less restrictions on fittings, could put a 10MN AB on a frig with the right skills (not good use but made for decent travel setup), missiles weren't locked to a launcher type, if the launcher had enough space for the missile you could load and missile launchers weren't restricted to ship size either, ie with arbalast missile launchers you could load cruise missiles on a kestrel, launchers only held 1 cruise missile though (the original suicide kessie). Plus a lot of other fun little tricks that you can't do any more (not that all of them were useful).
Missiles weren't nerfed and would wtfpwn small targets as they should.
No highways, travel took longer and it was more dangerous with out WTZ, made the universe feel larger. (though I like WTZ since we all just made WTZ bookmarks)
BS were hella expensive and not very common, cruisers ruled.

In the old days missiles hit anyone who was in the way.
... a kestrel could fit cruise missiles, and a couple of caracals (tier 1) could easily kill a battleship in under a minute.
... the 'Jita lag' extended from Amarr all the way to Yulai.
... missiles did full damage to frigs, and the only way to avoid damage was to outrun them.
... splash damage on innocents from torps aggroed concord.
I'm sure there's plenty more

Ask lots of old players, eve was best when we were all noobs.
So many people these days, it's a natural progression of the game but in my eyes, I would love for 0.0 to go back to the way it was. Screw outposts and POS control and sov, lets live out of cans and live constellation by constellation and system by system again. ________

Edited by: Arkedon on 17/03/2008 00:33:43 Ahh the old days... *Building a Thorax or Moa was a full corporate effort. Most corps at the time only had frigates and industrials, and we only had Basic Miners and Miner-I's available. * Mining in low sec was relatively easy as you only needed to worry about NPC rats. Everyone else was too busy mining low sec ore for their own corp ship building efforts. *If you meet someone in low-sec, it usually does not end up in PvP as no one wants to lose a ship...yet. *When some of the corps started getting bigger and richer, the first battleships appeared. *Those who flew battleships usually had several frigates and cruisers orbiting them just drooling at the sight. *The first battleship lost to PvP action made the headlines for days - and yes, there were Badgers involved.
And oh, lest we forget: m0o (I hope I spelled that right).

Old days were 10x better:-
Had no bs spawns, but you could chain the old cruisers like the 60k liquidator for hours!
Having 50 million meant you were loaded
Insurance made sense
Alliances at war were generally civil to each other.
There WERE no goons!

I remember not seeing another player for DAYS of game time, it was wonderful. now you can't go anywhere without having company and just cruising around seeing the sights is out of the question due to 90% of corps having a NBSI policy in place, no questions asked.

eve had more of a small town feel to it(well it was much smaller population wise but thats not the point)
Generally in your area of space you knew the neighborhood pretty well, the same crowd was generally all you saw. People were more cordial and willing to help eachother. People tended to not put themselves on pedestals or claim how pwnage they are, seeing as everyone was in equally horrible financial situations and most were only flying cruisers.
You could take a shuttle, plot its course to lets say branch, and fly there without being touched(minus the 0.0 entrances, p33n, ec-p8) The usually words to someone new in local was whats up, hows it hangin, not a frantic run to a safe spot like it is now adays for people making money out there

Edited by: Tyria Sharken on 17/03/2008 04:22:55 Edited by: Tyria Sharken on 17/03/2008 04:22:46 The biggest thing i miss from the old days, was being able to explore 0.0 in a frigate with the only worry being teh NPC rats sittign 40km from gates and hopein gyou could make that 15km run to teh gate befor they locked and fired on you. Nowadays you try going anywere in a Frigate in 0.0 your likaly to warp in on a pos and get insta poped befor you can even pick a warp point to get away, and tahts if you get past the ships guarding the gates with a 'if it isnt blue, assume its a spy and kill it' policy. I use to fly around in 0.0 in a rifter and look at the 'then' capitol ships (the battleships heh) takeing on rat spawns. Try that now and their likely to ignore the 50+ rats and target you instead.
and yes, i remember the Battle Badgers.. were a few Battle mammoths out and about back then to hehe.
*edit* and a Battle Badger is a Badger 1 or Badger 2 with either a Turret mounted on it and shield boosters/ressits + a ****load of cap boosters, or a smartbomb =D --------------------------------------------- "Only two great species on this planet take part in massive, organized warfare. warp to 15 km = one of the most fun times i had.
Yeah it was a PAIN - and yeah im really grateful for warp to 0. But i mean...espically in low sec when you had no instas - it was crazy - and the universe seemed SOOOO much bigger too. Fun times. -----

I do miss the sense of scale that was there back in the old days, travelling endless jumps through 0.0 and rarely meeting anyone, hell even empire was quiet back then. It certainly felt a lot larger back then, mind you with only 3k on at peak times i guess it was.

The game was no different back then....but the chances of that were a lot lower than they were today. I remeber running from a cruise missile launching bb, at a gate on his own while i was in a hauler...was a nice rush, not the blob camps we see today

we were flying from agil to MO-gz5 without instas just using the map every 1 min, to look how many players were in the next system.
We had to make 20 jump to get from Refining to factory station.
We had random CA dudes shooting the outposts every now and then.
Ohhhhh

I miss the community f the good old days...
Back then, when there was an issue, everybody replied as one man: "what can we do, how can we help ?, Might this be a good idea?"
Right now, every other post is a whine from people thinking they are inventing warm water all over again. The community is a mess and quite frankly I'm ashamed to read most posts in here.
The community has dumbed down and you can clearly see where the influx of new players comes from. It hasn't been a good thing.
Eve has become too small. It's not that you could travel for days without seeing anyone... Even if the population was smaller, people were still scattered about. They were friendlier though. Friendlier and at least constructive.
We're with too many and most people should learn to shut up as they are simply too stupid to be allowed a voice.

i remember beta days, everybody mining, because ways to earn money were unbalanced, mission didnt worth to do. everybody was in mining frigates. there was one interesting job - you can hire a man in fast firgate who agroed NPC in belt and run for 500km and NPC followed him, so you could mine the belt without danger. (nobody around was able to tank serpentis:)
