You know, i've been staring at my PS3 lately while sitting in a station in Eve and I thought....what if I could get Eve on my PS3? The PS3 is certainly a powerful system and could probably run Eve better then my PC:
1 gig RAM 250 Gigabyte HD 512 mb Radeon x1300 or so videocard 2.9 gigahurts processor etc etc
So, if I were to try to stick Eve on my PS3, be it by "Install Other O.S" option or just trying to stick it on the hard drive, do you guys think it would work? If so, how well? --------------------------------------------------

In theory you could install linux and then use that to play eve, in reality the hypervisor locks out a lot of the PS3's hardware from the guest operating system so it only run's at a fraction of the speed of what the hardware's really capable of.
The other issue you may hit is that the PS3 acutally uses a nvidia RSX graphics processor, the RSX is a little more powerful than the NVIDIA 7800.
Recently its been possible to exploit a bug in the ps3 firmware to run code below the hypervisor level but this is still in its early stages and is far from being able to run games directly without virtualization.

Is there any specific reason why Sony would want to do this?

Damn, I figured that would happen. Guess theres no way to trick the PS3 into thinking Eve is a PS3 game hu? Heh. To be honest I know nothing about the PS3's O.S or operations. I use my computer for the geeky stuff and never looked in the console's code. --------------------------------------------------

Sony haven't announced any definite reasons, though its commonly accepted that they dont want people buying the machines to use for nothing else other than a linux server. The PS3 actually cost's more to make than they are selling it for, Sony make the money back on the games. So if everyone and their dog was buying the PS3 for a server they would lose money. Sony could possibly have increased the price of the console itself to account for this but then that would not have been popular with those people wanting it as a games machine.
The thing is Sony wanted the PS3 to be seen as more than just a console, but this crippling of the guest operating system doesnt really do that goal much favors. Its bad enough that the guest operating system needs to be complied and coded to work on the cell processor, we certainly arnt going to be seeing Windows running on the PS3 anytime soon.

Why don't you just sell the Ps3 and buy better computer parts? It's not like the PS3 has any games.

He put an OS on to it, linux I think. As for premium content i'm unsure, I do know it runs fine though and he enjoys not being at a desk to play

Step 1: Somehow get ia32 code running on PPC. Step 2: Port EVE's graphic subsystem from D3D to OpenGL with PS3 extensions Step 2.1: Remove any Win32isms from EVE, replacing them with the Sony methods Step 3: Realize a lot of work is needed to make EVE even use any of the cell processors Step 4: Profit.

Because it's a challenge to do such things. Sometimes thats fun enough. The PS3 is a tinkerers dream. My mate spends hours seeing what he can get his psp and ps3 to do.

DMC 4, Assassin's Creed, Armored Core 4, Oblivion, MGS is coming out, LAIR, Heavenly Sword, to name half the games I love. I know a couple of those aren't exclusive but, who cares? I love my PS3 and, quite frankly, Assassin's Creed and Armored Core play fugly on the 360. Plus, the 360 f's up to much.
Back on topic: Thanks for the info, i'll look into making my PS3 into a linux box for Eve, but would you mind asking him how Premium works and what not? Also, once you install a new OS can you still run the original PS3 OS? --------------------------------------------------

Why would this be an issue? Provided that it is a fully 3D and OGL capable card I don't see the problem. A 7800 level card is MORE than capable of running the EVE Classic client in any situation. I still have an Nvidia 5600LE AGP card in my rig and I use the classic client with no trouble at all.

Heh. For your information both Assasins Creed and Armored Core 4 runs without a hitch on the 360. Dont know where you heard otherwise. Also, i feel rather sad for you, seeing the list of the "games you love".
And yeah, im a fan of the 360, even tho they break.

I've played these games on the 360. Assassin's Creed just feels like crap and AC4 has bad lighting issues in some levels that T me off. Anyway, this isn't the thread to argue about it.
PS: Wii > 360
To Celeste Coeval, thanks, ask him to evemail me or e-mail me at [email protected], i'd be much obliged. Also, I have Oblicion on the PC. I only play it on the ps3 because I look the graphical boost. It's hard to see it but I can tell straight away when I switch from playing the ps3 for a month back to the PC, even with the graphics set to high. --------------------------------------------------

Edited by: Celeste Coeval on 18/03/2008 17:52:38 e-mail forwarded Graphics arent everything in oblivion my friend.
Try these mods: start a new game and well er forget vanilla oblivion
Oscuro's oblivion overhaul with x4 slower leveling and console command settimescaleto 10 Elys's level uncapper (no leveling caps until lvl 255) Oblivion Script extender (OBSEv 14 now i think)
check out tes nexus for more.
Also there are retextures of everything almost in oblivion on the pc that even on lower cards make the PS3 envious.
also try the construction set yourself:)

I know Oblivion is better on the PC to be honest, but I still enjoy playing the game of the year addition on my PS3. I kind of got tired of Oblivion to be honest so I rarely play it now though.
And thanks for forwarding the e-mail, I hope to get a response soon. I'd love to see pretty pretty Eve on my PS3. --------------------------------------------------

Ignoring that, the biggest hurdle is going to be running IA32/x86 code on a PowerPC processor.
That and PS 3 Linux can't access the full graphics hardware due to Sony restrictions.

Just look at the Mac and Linux Client and their Performance. These even run under popular OSes and x86 Archtecture. Imagine how EVE whould perform on a specialized CPU like the one of the PS3 without any easy-to-get-in-APIs.
no way...CCP isn't doing well of porting Eve to other platforms. Transgaming was an epic fail and a PS3 Port won't do 10fps in the next 3 years.

EVE Premium runs just fine under Linux with normal Wine. In fact it runs way better than TransGaming official Linux EVE. But its still an API emulation layer hack - not native and not optimal :)

This would be an issue because when running the guest OS the hardware does not run at its full potential, so while a 7800 would be more than enough to run eve, a crippled 7800 does not run nearly so good.
I recommend reading Here. Currently the games that run well under on linux for the PS3 do not have 3D acceleration. This is something that the community is working on but its going to take some work and time.
There is a thread about making games work for the PS3 using Yellow Dog Linux Here people on there have been having issue currently even getting games like Warcraft 2 and Duke Nukem working well.

Honestly, based on my experiences with VMWare (workstation, server, EXS Server and Lab) and MS Server and the old Xen server, I wouldn't expect any machine running on a hypervisor to be capable of running any 3D at all.
I thought you were making a comment about the hardware itself, not the hardware running through a hypervisor. It would appear that I misunderstood you.
