Lets face it beyond our ships the EVE Universe is black, with more black and some shiny things and a few planets and maybe if you're lucky some debris/asteroids/gas clouds here and there.
The areas in WoW are all different and each portrays its purpose very well, from the music through to the monsters/NPCs that inhabit that area and the stories they have to tell. Theres nothing more interesting than doing something because you want to find out the end result of the story, WoW does this sort of thing very well. I'm not saying WoW is perfect, it has its share of flaws - repetitive end-game, grinding, lack of real difference between the classes, etc.
EVE really lacks something for the explorers amoungst us, theres probing and exploration but you can't just jump straight into that - and lets face it, would you really want to? Once you've seen one plex you've seen them all. People want to see things like explorable areas, standing with NPC corps that means something other than what missions you get and a more free feeling game. EVE is very controlled, you click you go there, in WoW you walk along a path and think well I'm going to go over here and see whats there. EVE also has a steep learning curve which most people find unattractive. Also, from my experience with the majority of EVE players they tend to be a moody bunch at the best of times, its not very welcoming to be shouted at by an angry 20 something sitting in his parents basement because he thinks the fitting on your Raven is 'LOL'.
EVE has its fair share of good points - PvP, controllable areas, POS' (not shooting them :P), alliances, some of the best form of non-real world political dramas and a true 'free' feeling to it, which you just don't get with games like WoW.
Hell, I love EVE and for me it does exactly what I want it to, PvP and more PvP but lets face it if you couldn't shoot people freely (in 0.0 anyway) would you still play....? I probably wouldn't.
