Eurogamer.net is in the process of re-reviewing popular MMOs. World of Warcraft is first, and scored 10/10. This doesn't mean its perfect, nor will EG say this. It means it hits all the right criteria to make the game enjoyable on all accounts has been reached [ read subjective ]
Quote: WOW might have made Blizzard stupendously rich and powerful, but it hasn't made it complacent. Its maintenance of the game goes far beyond tinkering under the hood and bolting on new features. Its drive to improve every aspect of the game experience is tireless.
Granted Blizzard are giants in respect to CCP, but lets face it, CCP are no slouches either. I wonder what Eve will score as Eurogamer are known to be quite tough reviewers.

People like WoW because it's simple, or more specifically is copies every other MMO out there that has reached some level of fame and made it mainstream. There is NOTHING original in WoW really, but Blizzard had the money to push and Advertise it. The fame of WoW comes only from their ability to hit key advertising points that CCP can't do.

There might be some, but most of the gameplay concepts are tireed and done repeaditly. I've been an MMO beta tester for quite awhile and it's hard to find much originiality in WoW. Hell, that's the reason I don't like it much. It's just another Fantasy Medieval rpg based on grinds and levels. Asda Story, a game hardly anybody ever knows about, has more depth then WoW in the deep story, constant quests, and the Soulmate system which allows you to permanently link with another player fore special spells and bonuses. --------------------------------------------------

If by "depth" you mean "grind", then yes. WoW has depth in spades.

Played wow for a year and a half, and other mmo's for at least a year (e.g. Ever***** *cough* erm EverQuest, Lotro, Vnagaurd, ect.. and soon to be Warhammer) having played quite a few mmo's for at least a year's time, I can safely say that WoW has virtually no depth to it... at all what-so-ever. It's all run-and-gun type of game. Then again, I was on a pvp server so.. that may have been a factor. ---------------------------------------------

originality does not guarantee "success".
if that were true, we'd see less formulaic 3-act structure movies like spider-man or 300. instead, jim jarmusch and peter greenaway would be "kings of the world".
i suggest reading theodore adorno's "the schema of mass culture" in his book "the culture industry" if you want some insight as to why wow outpaces eve in every respect.

I'll state it again. WoW has something called advertising money. They have commercials, sponsorships, hell if you go to an internet caffee you find PAMPHLETS. They grab the attention of the majority and, since for many it's their first MMO, they fall in love for it. Their beautiful advertisers, but their game is mediocre. Plus, a lot of gamers can't handle the harsh reality of Eve. --------------------------------------------------

Eve is the easy mode? Sure it may seem easy now that we've been playing it for a few years... but what about to the little noob that just fired up the character creation a few days ago? I remember, back in the day , when I started that learning to play EvE was like climbing a cliff using just your arms. Yes, they've made it easier, most likely in the hopes to keep newb's playing longer or giving the game "one last chance," but EvE is far from easy... starting off. After that you come to the realization that you'll never be a better skilled pilot than a majority of the player base, but keep on truckin' anyway. ---------------------------------------------

ikasu, im not disagreeing with you. but there is more to it than "buying success" through marketing. read the aforementioned essay online somewhere; you will see. wow does things eve does not. those things are addressed in the essay.

It's right in the same way cigarette manufacturers have got it right. WoW's infinite grind is addictive, but not much else. ---------------- Tarminic - 33 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.79.2 |

To be frank, I've started playing WoW the first day it came out, this was in 03? Back then there were few servers and raiding instances with guildmates was really really fun (and super funny). The game was well designed (i still think its a very well designed game compared to other mmo's on the market today), the community was good, and at that time it really beat all the other mmo's hands down.
Blizzard is a good company whom have made some damn good games. The only problem with WoW was that it got popular, and the community fell to crap.
Comparing Eve to WoW is really like apples and oranges though. Eve has a high barrier of entry to stupid people, which is good, because at the end of the day, they will all leave.
I'm just glad the standard of MMO's are being raised by such good companies. Beats the hell out of games like lineage2.
Hopefully 5-10 years from now Eve will evolve to something even greater. I like the direction they're taking with Ambulation. Opens up a whole new slew of things to play with (fleet op command from stations, poker, luxury liners, planetary warfare, etc)
Now if only they would fix the damn $#%^#$% lag.

Allow me to let you in on a little industry secret... the people who review the game... don't actually play the game at the top levels. Their reviews are based on "other" things.

Halo is much the same way. The games aren't groundbreaking or anything really new, but it was just all done so well and Bungie marketed it properly.
