Quad Announces Grome 1.2, Square Enix, CCP Licensees
Quad Announces Grome 1.2, Square Enix, CCP Licensees Quad Software has announced a new release of its Grome terrain and virtual scene modeling application, adding support for automated tasks by scripting and new editing brushes, and processing speed improvements for existing tools
Additionally, Quad says it has enhanced integration with client development pipelines and engines with new data exporting plug-ins capable of exporting very large data sets.
The company also revealed some of its most recent licensees, including Square Enix, EVE Online creator CCP Games, and MMO developer Star Vault, adding that several universities implement Grome for graphical courses and multimedia projects.
Adrian Licuriceanu, Quad Software technical director in charge of Grome development, commented, ôDuring the commercial existence of our product we listen to our clientsÆ suggestions and based on that we try to continually improve our application. I think that version 1.2 is a good improvement to all since weÆve added quite interesting new features like brush operating fractals and also largely optimized previous editing."
Sooooooooo.....
is this for shiny new planet effects or getting ready for fly over planet, eh.

That was a misleading title on that article. At one point I thought CCP was selling Square Enix a license to make a game based on EVE.

It doesn't mean anything, most developers license software for research and development. It might be they was just interested in seeing how it works.

Even if CCP purchased the license to use with World of Darkness, don't forget that they can then also use it for Planetary Interaction, which was annouced to be in the works for EVE. If you have the tools, why not use them as much as possible, you sure payed enough for them.

Why not both Ambulation and the WoD ? It would maximize the return on their investment if they could use it for both projects.

Ambulation is just a dream like factional warfare. Its like eyecandy for eyecandy. When you break it down and look at it, theres really no point for it in EVE. Granted it would be a cool little side feature, but not something useful.

normally i'd agree with you but in the case of planetary interaction its not simply eye-candy. Eve above all other mmorpgs i have ever played has remained true to the ideals of its source materials, its epic space opera, empires fighting among the stars and in every single film, book, poster and just idle daydream, being able to get out and walk on a planet really adds something.
should the space aspect of the game still remain the total focus? yes of course Should the planetside of the game be nothing more than an interactive pos? it doesent matter should ccp simply not do it because its 'just fluff'? no, it needs to be in the game.
people may say that the game needs work without adding this, I say this game has always been missing it. By working on it and releasing it (no matter how many bugs may slip in) all it does is make eve the game we always hoped it would be before we ever started playing
.....

Real programmers do it by themselves.
As seen here, in a one man project:

Indeed. You know, I still remember Elite (if you guys don't know what I am talking about you probably don't deserve an opinion on this matter ). It was probably the best game out there, an EVE-like solo game. But the largest flaw that had been found in Elite was the lacking of planetary interaction.
Then Braben came out with Frontier, which added planetary interaction and better graphics (and many other features) to the original Elite. But after an initial impact, planetary interaction wasn't really worth it. It is true that the ability to fly and land on planets was great on first impact, but after the first few times you realized that instead of docking to space station you would be docking on planetside spaceports, and that was about all.
However, EVE doesn't need to fall in this trap. Planetside may have much more sense in EVE than it ever had in Frontier or related games. Exploration on planets may introduce a whole new facet to exploration. Planetary sovereignity might add new facets to territorial conquests. Battles on planets to gain such soveriegnety might add new facets to combat, with the ability of pod pilots to control terrestrial and atmospheric vehicles.
There are many untapped possibilities, doe to EVE's MMO nature.

The thing about the EVE population is that damn near everyone is after efficiency. Flying around in planetary environments sounds cool, but does it help me mine faster or boost my DPS? Will I be able to get something tangible that is more worthy of my time than any of the other things I could be doing? No?
Ambulation is going to be like EVE voice, another feature that just gets in the way and winds up completely unused because there is no actual reason to use it.

If I'm gonna mine for hours near a planet with a bunch of friends, it might as well be a good looking planet to drool over then an oversized looking asteroid. ------------------------

Possible reasons to go station/planetside:
Implants Skillbooks Archeology/Hacking sites Atmospheric combat FPS combat Faction (standings) Storyline stuff New stuffs entirely (ie: things wholly related to non-spaceships eve)

This is exciting stuff. Too many friends have complained to me and said they just cant get used to being a ship (I know) but with ambulation and maybe even planetfall as hinted at with this.... well. Good stuff!
Wasn't there a video somewhere that showed Eve and world landscapes?

Yup there was. Fanfest 2007 footage I think it was either the Oveur presentation on saturday or the Ambulation presentation on friday.

In large part ambulation and related projects arent really aimed at us. We already play eve and do whatever it is we do. It's there for that guy in the above posts friends that want to sit in a cantina and look at other peoples characters.
Dont get me wrong, if they actually give good fleet/corp/alliance tools in the 'warroom' that will be plenty good. But even isnt going to change at all for me when ambulation comes out. Unless they put some pressing reason for me to interact with it that I enjoy, whatever.
