I was noticing that all new players (aka. n00bs) want to join the big alliances, BoB, Goonswarm, RAZOR and so on. I particiapte of a small active alliance and we fight to find and keep members from leaving to the big ones. I would like to post here some ideas and exchange knowledge on how to recruit members and corporations. Btw, the recruitment channel IS NOT A VIABLE OPTION. That channel is just a big spam. Channels and any kind of in-game recruitment, forums and tips are welcome.
Fly safe.

i would disagree with the OP. Sure the new players often wish to join large alliances - but many of them leave that alliances after a while becouse POS warfare and megalags aint fun. And at this moment they realize - they need a small alliance or corp that can give them the fun in the game without the big problems. At least for PvP i would state this. However industrialists truely are better with big alliances.

I'd recommend having some sort of aim or purpose. then work on creating a corporate culture that suits everyone. Level of maturity, amount of independance/guidance members are given, some beurocracy but not so much that it becomes a burden.
People will always get attracted to the big alliances with glittering dreams of fabulous wealth and uber battles, but ultimately they'll come back to you and if you're lucky, bring some of their friends too.
As for recruitment, unless you already have the reputation, you have to actively go chasing people. Get a public channel, get all your members and friends to chill there and keep inviting people in that you meet along your travels. That way, by the time they apply everyone already knows and loves them.
Alternatively, just go to a popular mission running system or mining system or something and pick on anyone in local for a convo. Just say you're recruiting and if they're interested. Noob corp and 1 month old is ideal if you want "fresh blood" (though clearly you talk to them first and make sure they're right for you. "Hi, I'm recruiting on behalf of my corp" "this is what we do, this is what we ask of you" etc)
Get your core corpies to help you, lean on contacts, get yourself invited to channels for other corps or social chit-chat channels, strike up convo's about anything really and get yourself out there and known (networking I think is the term).
And don't forget it is a long term thing. A few days of concerted effort is fine, but don't do it at the expense of the newbies you just recruiting hanging around with nothing to do

I'd recommend that Spoon thumb's first point is the most important.
Defining a specific objective (or set of objectives) plus working towards them in group activities is very important, as it; - Gives your corp a focus - Enables people with the same passion to join - Weeds out the crap applicants from the really interested players - Lets you build a legend around your corporation (That corp x is really good at y) - Provides your members with a sense of achievement and team when you obtain your goals.
Just trying to "beef up numbers" of people in your corporation won't work successfully, as you will not be providing a concrete reason to stay.
Your goal could be a series of short-term goals and/or long-term. Set specific time-lines to achieve the goals.

Start small and build bigger, pace yourself, try to excel at what you do and gradually work up rather than taking a jumping and sucking at what you do.
Quality and stability attracts players, not promises. ------ I speak on behalf of my corporation PS. You suck |

Specialize. Pick something you want to be good at, add being good at well-organised group pvp to that, and go try be better at it then everyone else, and don't be shy about telling people about your ambition.
Then people will want to join if they fit your mold, and that's the only ones you would want anyway.
Most important of all is intuitive leadership, instead of adopting some kind of forced-feeling way too complicated structure.

Speaking as a nOOb, I have a question: Is a small corporation a casual player ought to consider joining, or would they have better luck in a larger corporation? Put another way: as someone who only gets a few hours a week to play, would my lack of corporate contributions be an issue in a smaller organization, where such a deficiency would be easier to spot?
