Lo there
Was just wondering when the public beta program was running? I played EVE during this period and am trying to remember when it was as I am doing a blog (when in |Rome and all that) and want my rough dates correct.
cheers

Well, game went live may 6th 2003 iirc, think it was in public beta for a good while before then. My own beta experience was early 2003 mostly, though that was already late beta. --------------

TBH, Eve today is a bug free cruise compared to Beta. Players today think they have it rough... --------------

I personally think beta was more fun when all the roids were in big squares. And then that time they tried rat formations. Rats went from easy street to uber pwnage in a patch. And I really mean uber pwnage. That was cool. *-------------------------* This is not a good sig. |

Edited by: Karash Amerius on 27/03/2008 16:21:57 Beta was early 2003, but really didnt last that long by today's standards. SSI really was pushing CCP to release, and release they did. Eve didnt really get 'out of beta' till Exodus. The game is one million times better than it was in beta, no matter what the former glory fanbois will tell you.
Although I do wish TomB would come back...would reduce a lot of the carebear-ish balancing going on these days.

Open beta started in early 2003. Closed beta was a good 6 months to a year before that.

I'm not sure when I was in beta then. I'm sure it was in the latter half of 2002 but cannot be 100% sure.

You are of course right, but the OP was asking about a public beta so I did not think to mention all of that...but you did, for some odd reason. Eve had external testers for about the last year (march 2002 I think?)...but it was very limited with 20 people sitting in a single sector with one station.

Well I still got my chatlogs from beta and the first log is 20th September 2002. Right next to my earthandbeyond.log file
For some reason everybody seemed to like me a lot more back then. Seems I was some kind of semi-e-celeb. Even got invited to polaris.
Heh sucks I wasn't old enough to realize that I could have gone all the way with CCP back then. All the important guys are in there james_, kwai, molle, t20, ...
Seems I even tried to recruit t20 lol

I got my Beta 4 or 5 invitation in March 2003. There was at least a month before it went open to all.
I'll never forget the message that popped up for Beta 6, I think it was. "Everything is in the game, and we're ready to go." Or something like that. Half the ships, guns, and mods hadn't even been released, yet they said that. I won't even get into the other mechanics that weren't implemented by then.

It wasn't a game mechanics check at that point, it was a stress-test. IIRC, there were battleships and large guns and a number of other things available during the alpha.
Oh, yes, there was a closed alpha, too. I wasn't in it personally, but Rougie told me a bit about it. I'm an end-of-the beta feller myself. I miss #[email protected] the devchats...and Evegate/GNN/EVE-I...

I'll just whip out my massive 4m SP and let you gaze in awe. Or not. :-(
I switched to Linux cold-turkey in September 2003 or so. We didn't have a Linux or Mac client for EVE back in those days.

I was too young to get in the beta at the time oh... 5 years ago now?
I got the game on release though. Lots of people talked about beta, apparently an asteroid belt resembled a loaf of bread... ...

I started in late 2002 I think. I think I missed the first 3 closed beta patches but I was there before open beta. Actually, I loved beta. When it was cr@p and the devs were so obviously wrong they at least listened to your bug reports and acted on them. They dont listen at all these days and they are, generally, really p1ss poor at their jobs. Regardless of the other posts here today, my general impression is that beta was better cos they listened and acted upon bugs you found. I'm so disillusioned now I dont even bother to fill them in as you just know they dont care. You would have updates daily at times. True, alot of days you didnt get to play at all, servers would suddenly stop etc, but at least it was because you knew they were trying to fix stuff. The devs are no longer pro-active, they are just re-active. I love the game, I just wish we had better devs who actually cared about the game, now its just a wage and a job.

Well, I got to EVE beta in beta2 phase and at the same time much better game accepted me - Neocron. Well, EVE beta2 was P.I.T.A! I wasn't able to log in because login screen rotating EVE logo ate all the juice I had due a bug in nVidia drivers back then. Then when I got to play after FEW patches, it was horrible game with error windows. All I did was go to lowsec and mine bistot there with frigate and basic mining lasers. Yay.
Luckily, Neocron was much better .. but from those 2 games only one is now a big name.
