Seriously. I log in, and then I type a (very short!) post, and then I try to post, and it fails (logs me out).
I've taken to logging in, clicking reply, writing the posts, copying them, submitting, and going back to the forum page, logging in, going back to the topic, replying, and posting.
And it seems to happen every 20 minutes or so throughout the day - as if you have a round robin load balancer that's just braindead.
Fix the damn forums, it's getting old.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 28/03/2008 04:11:14 In Iceland, forum fixes you.
edit: to be more constructive, I have that same problem pretty frequently. Closing all open browser windows and then starting over from scratch helps. Also if you hit the back button after a failed post it should take you back to the text box page with your text still entered. Attempt that latter action at least once before doing the browser restart.

You know, I recommended eve to a friend and did the wingman nonsense and he sent me email earlier today saying "dude, the forums don't even work, let me know when it's out of beta." I don't have the heart to tell him it launched in 2003.

+1000.
This forum is literally worst than the ones provided FREE with $19.95 hosting accounts. Come on CCP.
http://www.vbulletin.com/
This is just one example. CCP can't spare $160 for a license. Hell I would pay for it if they would just use it. Or any one of a dozen+ other products.
Virtually all forum boards have: * real search (limit by member, subforum, keyword, title only, etc) * auto search when trying to create new post * customizable profile page * account history (length, # posts, rating) * block/hide annoying users.
The software at this point is literally plug and play. There is no excuse.

With the level of animosity on these forums I don't see how being able to block annoying members would be beneficial. Can you imagine how disjointed threads would become when all the regulars, who will have no doubt blocked half the other regulars, start posting in it?

I've found what causes this problem, for me at least, it seems that the forums use your IP address to secure your session, if your ISP uses transparent proxies, you will be logged out every time your proxy changes, which could be every click.
this is because the forums end up using the proxy IP address and not your IP address. for me the fix was to specify a specific proxy server in my browser settings.

I'd agree with that, if it didn't happen everywhere I go (home and work).
Also I know for fact that I have a static IP at work.

A fixed IP may not make any difference, I have a fixed IP at home, but my telecoms company has a bunch of proxies that sit right on the main backbone, and all outgoing traffic, for the entire country (they are the only telecoms company in the country) goes through those proxies, that's why it's called a transparent proxy.
When CCP's server asks for your IP address, it will get either the Proxies address, or both the proxy and your address, it seems that even when they get your address along with the proxies address, the forums choose to use the proxies address.
To test this go to these two sites http://whatsmyip.org/ http://whatismyip.com/
The first site will give you you're real address even with a proxy, it correctly identifies your IP and ignores any proxy addresses, it's not difficult to do, but then we are talking about CCP here.
The second one will either give you the same IP, in which case you are not going through a proxy, or it will give you a different address than the first indicating that you are going through a proxy, CCP's developers may have been involved in the development of this site.

They're the same IP. I know that we're not sitting on a transparent proxy because of the nature of the work I do. :)

I know for a fact the problem is not just with proxies, I checked this at work.
This problem has only recently arisen in the last couple of weeks so it would suggest that some update to the forum software or login server has broken something.

I think the forums should be fixed also. But not for the same reasons. The forum is broken in my eyes because you have around 10 threads on the front page all on the same topic, thats not counting the hundreds of threads that have fallen off the front page which are all about the same topic. Seriously, its insane. If people have an opinion on a certain topic why do they feel the need to start ANOTHER thread when there's already 6 or 7 threads right there they could post in. This sort of thing can call in the ban hammer on other forums, or at least they get merged. Jihadswarm is a perfect example of this, as is 'how to fix low sec' I see the mods locking threads here and there so why do they not merge threads and discourage people from duplicating? [/rant]

I'd like to see the following:
1. Moderators (given|use) the ability to delete posts instead of replacing the body with 'Inappropriate content cleared by XXX'. 2. Moderators (given|use) the ability to delete entire threads classified as spam instead of locking them. 3. The 'Thread Moved to XXX' threads expire on the forum they were moved from after an hour or two. 4. That rather unique session bug fixed. 5. A better search tool implementing, allowing me to search per-user, in certain forums, and by certain user classes (ie find all threads containing dev posts in General Chat).
The first three suggestions help the forums a lot by reducing the signal-to-noise ratio. Seeing two or three locked spamthreads on the front page of general chat is wasted space. Locking a thread has its uses; a discussion has escalated into a flamewar or simply pattered out - you wouldn't want to delete those (useful) posts, but you don't want additional posts to bump the thread/escalate it/etc. The spamthreads do not have a legitimate reason to be maintained.
The same applies to deleting replies instead of 'clearing' them of content. I don't want to waste time scrolling through meaningless posts. It's noise. --- Owl |

Have you ever moderated a forum? If not, here's some sage advice: NEVER DELETE.
Deleting just makes posters freak out and causes all kinds of unnecessary headaches; there are only so many "Hey ******* where did my post go?" posts you can read before you want to run amok with an axe. The system here of sanitizing offensive posts and letting locked threads slip gracefully off the front page is one of the most sensible I've ever seen and results in a really enjoyable dearth of moderator flames. The mods here are right on the money in this case IMO. ______________________________

Or you could do as I do, write your post or reply in notepad or similar.
Is it really worth it, for your own convenience? If CCP were to choose one of the more "forum solutions" out there, they could open themselves to potential security risks as many of the functions on the site seems to be integrated into one and another.
So, for my own convenience, I write in notepad.

I think you have to elaborate what issues they are, as I use the forum in its uttermost simplicity.

I have moderated forums and written forum software.
I understand perfectly well where you're coming from. But do you regularly read CAOD? People constantly post trollthreads and spam knowing perfectly well that they shouldn't be making posts like that. They get locked after a few minutes. Some nights there can be five or six locked, cleared, and utterly useless threads on the front page - that's a significant number of them.
Besides, the "where did my post go!?!" posts can be countered very easily with another software enhancement: show the deleted post to the poster with some (very obvious) indication that it was deleted, and allow the deleting moderator to specify a reason. --- Owl |
