Hi all,
I am just starting out here... managed to slip into a Minmatar Probe Frigate and am now trying to make a little money running errands and Mining. Trouble is, when I start mining in the 0.8 and below zones, I am getting jumped by little pirate NPCs. They are ranked as low or Very Low threat, but I still am getting thrashed and end up running away from my mining. Needless to say this is embarrassing and I need to decide what (a) is within reach of my skills as a very new Minmatar Sebiestor and (b) possible for a Minmatar Probe. With very limited weapons slots, I am currently only using the Civilian gatling gun from the intro ship. Is the Probe able to handle missles, or is an upgraded projectile weapon my best bet? OR.... should I just concentrate on getting the best combat probes I can locate? The probes actually seem a reasonable options.... but I still want a mounted weapon as well....
I have no intention of using this ship for intensive dogfights, I just want to be able to take out the very lowest level of pirate NPC drones.....

Your best bet is to train up a few drone skills. Drones L2-3 and Scout Drone Operation L1 will be enough, at least to defend yourself in the Probe while mining. Put some light scout drones in the drone bay and you're set. The Probe has no missile bays, and if you are mining you want to use both your high slots for mining beams. Also, put a Small Shield Booster in one of the Medium slots. That will keep you alive.

Drones are your best friend for that setup. Couple of mining lasers, 1 hammerhead and 3 cheapo light drones will keep you perfectly safe in a 0.8.

Thanks, This is a lot like I was thinking.... a couple really nasty combat drones could be the answer... and I could concentrate on Mining Lasers rather than mining probes... for now that sounds good.

You can throw in a shield booster for defense while your drones go to work. Also don't forget to buy a rifter when you can afford one (which will be soon), put some artillery on it and it'll give you nice breaks from mining ;-)

My China Junk (Doesn't the probe look like an old Chinese Junk? :) ) has served me long, well, and proud since the fellows here on the board told me to pick one up. LVL 2 Drone and Lvl 1 Scout Drones is all you need to defend yourself quite well in a probe. I tend to use warriors as my drone of choice in this case.
If you learn Drones LVL 3 you can carry and launch three at a time to cover you while you're mining. My current probe set-up. (ANd still my primary ship even though I've got a combat ship now too. ;) )
Probe:
High: 2 Miner 1's
Medium: Afterburner I and empty slot.
Lows: Cargo Expander and a Co Prossessor 1.
My skills aren't so great that I can pack her full of lots of stuff, but this gets the job done well.
