Who has seen it and what did you think?
Being an avid AVP fan from it's comic book days, I was hoping for more, but I didn't have high hopes after the first AVP movie. Needless to say, this failed to deliver again, but was at least more entertaining than the first one

When did the comic book come out?
I remember having the comics back in the early 90s. I think it was the same year as Alien 3 and possibly even before that film came out so it was still fairly fresh.
Since then I think they've pretty much wrung every possible variation of eggs, facehuggers, chestbursters, aliens tongues going through heads, predators taking people's heads as trophy's etc. etc. out of the series till there's just nothing left to do with any of it but rehash stuff that's already been done four times already.
Alien 3 was borderline and Alien 4 was chuffing horrible.
Not the best material to make a film that doesn't suck out of I think. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I actually liked the first one more. Maybe it's because I'm a tech freak and loved the whole maze thing. The second one didn't really have anything new and intresting in it.

It came across as a poor remake of Aliens but set on Earth.

Is it just me or did the predator's 'Alien' vision get a major downgrade from AvP to Requiem? In the first one it was detailed, could cycle through modes (to e.g. see unhatched facehuggers in their eggs or chestbursters prior to eruption) and was just generally awesome. In this second movie it's a blurry, washed out green-yellow mess, it's a wonder it could hit the side of an alien coloured barn with it's plasma caster.
Note: special mode to track facehugger slime = very cool. ----------

The one and only thing which annoyed me to no end was the whole "oh, look, we can get from facehugger to full-grown xenomorph in under 60 seconds" jig. I mean, COME ON ! But, IF you could ignore that part (pretty hard to do, really, but, meh, whatever, I've had worse "suspension of disbelief" attempts), and if you could also "ignore" you have seen the rest of the Alien/Predator movies altogether ("continuity breaks" galore), the rest was pretty much enjoyable, more than the first one. I especially liked the whole "(almost) everybody dies" approach.

I have yet to see a movie that could replace Aliens. This one couldn't even replace the first instalment of the AvP series. AvP2 has a pretty shallow story with unimportant characters that you love to see inner-jawed by aliens and impaled by the predator. Also, aliens half as impressive when they are out in the wild, and this movie lacked closed places. The military acted as if they weren't even there. A few shots and pretty much everyone was alrady dead. Military hardware mustered in this movie was highly unimpressive save for the bomb that finally wasted that unlovable sheriff and his lackeys. Then a few teenagers with no place to make love suddenly turn into fierce warriors and start to pwn. Get out of here! They turned the Alien franchise into Fun Factory.
Hint for directors: when in doubt make sure you don't do anything the same way James Cameron did because your movie would be too good for the masses.
Here's my opinion of the movie.

I thought it was alright, watched it not expecting a masterpiece but a fairly mindless action film, which is basically what it is.
Shame that it went from the first one having 2 out of the 3 preds being total wusses, now in this one all but one alien (the pred-alien) being wussy and basically in it for cannon fodder. Surely can't be that hard to make both sides seem as menacing as in the origional films can it?

i'm thinking of going to see it...do it got:
1) lots of blood? 2) giant black bug like things that eat people? 3) big predators that stabb people with claws? 4) space ships? 5) boobies? Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |

This kind of comment has got to rank as the dumbest and most useless one on the internet regarding opinions on movies. How annoying to read these at the Internet Movie Database IMDB, but really also awkward anywhere.
Statements like "stay away from it" should be reserved for "Chairman of the board". ^^

Edited by: Xen Gin on 30/03/2008 13:19:55 It was OK as a bit of entertainment, but it does absolutely nothing for the genre. With the original films, they made them as swearing and gory as possible, nowadays they scale it back to 15+ to target a wider audience which means the film suffers as a whole. Also the over use of CGI stretches the budget and the CGI quality is also reduced, because so many scenes have to be rendered.

I found it funny that the Aliens killed willy nilly, and the movie didn't detract from killing off otherwise generally accepted 'untouchable' characters. This includes children, love interests, preganant mothers and their unborn babies, etc.
Which leads me onto another point; since when has an Alien had the capability of impregnating someone. Thats what the facehuggers were for. I understand that it's a shallow alternate version of the AVP universe, but it simply takes too many liberties with the existing Alien story.
Furthermore, the Aliens seemed ridiculously subpar in this. In previous movies, they were violent killers, stronger, faster, and more resilient than anything encountered to date. In this, they're wimpy, only filled with acid when the movie needs it, and prone to falling over dead after a single gun shot.
I was hoping that the movie was going to redeem the audio/visual interpretation of the franchise, but I fear it's done nothing but remind me that Hollywood bastardises almost every previously existing franchise it gets hold of.

Better than AVP1, but still awful. In fact, this actually makes it worse.
I mean, the first one was so bad that it had a sort of cheesy, mockable fun about it's awfulness that made it fairly enjoyable to sit through. This one was just good enough not to be fun, while still being a complete failure as a horror/action/thriller film.
Plus, the whole "Predalien" thing was done pretty terribly. Being vaguely acquainted with the comics and video games, I knew a little about the concept already...and the film just did it badly. It was basically a bigger, slower alien, right? Well don't we already have those (from previous media) from the human-alien strain? Also, the impregnating women thing made absolutely no sense whatsoever, and the fact that a single unarmed Predator (remember, the first Predator ever seen was successfully beaten to a pulp by Arnie in the original film, once unarmed) could kill it (and a myriad of other aliens) just seemed stupid.
Not to mention the other continuity problems: variable acid (sometimes it was strong enough to melt an entire human arm in 20 seconds, sometimes it didn't seem to be there at all...), instant aliens (2 hours from egg to adult), no queen or other similar canon alien behaviour (or was that supposed to be a "Predqueen" or something?), aliens that sometimes die from 2 gunshot wounds and sometimes survive being minced to pieces, a "military response" that consisted of about 15 men who died in like 3 minutes, and a Predator who seems driven by distinctly un-Predator-like emotions (revenge? desire to control an alien outbreak? having a daytrip?). ------

I can answer this one... the predator ship wasn't meant to crash and release the aliens, so he was on a mission to destroy all the aliens and every possible host. Also I'm pretty sure him and the Predator in the ship were of the same clan and he had to save face

Quote: (remember, the first Predator ever seen was successfully beaten to a pulp by Arnie in the original film, once unarmed)
Thats not really true, in the first Predator movie, even unarmed the predator beat the ever living crap out of Arnie. The only reason Arnie lived was the Predator made one mistake and had a freakin part of a tree dropped on its head.
I found Avp2 Enjoyable and frustrating to watch. It had good things but, they did get shadowed by the really stupid things like the dorky teen romance.
The thing I still don't get about the AvP movies, is that pretty much every single Fan of the idea of AvP movies. Wants them in the freaking future with Colonial Space Marines, predators, Aliens, Weyland-Yutani installations and aliens running amok, predators killing willy nilly and the Marines shooting first asking questions later.
So why did they decide to put the franchise in modern times and start completely screwing with the established alien lifecycle?
Hell if they had just made the PC Avp2 game into a movie it would of kicked so much more *** then the two movies we've gotten.
