You have to keep it fresh.
Eve has become ******* boring for too many, cause nothing of interrest changed since Apocrypha.
Had a quick fun with drams and machs and that was it. Seriously.
The worst of it is that people have completely resigned and are now waiting for anything, any change. Erm, hi, sorry for asking, could we please have a sign of a small change in a vague future? PLEASE CCP?
I keep seeing things like :
"A supercap nerf would be good enough"
"Engine trails, and erm, maybe old cyno effect? well that might be too much asking"
Even I tended to think like that until I realized yesterday it's really a terrible way of thinking.
I want T3 frigs so that the T3 line doesn't look yet like another unfinished feature. Give us new content, ofc there will be unbalances, then just be reactive when things need to be looked at and rebalanced, don't ******* wait one year to rebalance a dramiel if there is too much power in it.

I agree largely with the OP.
If they don't have a ship/module expansion soon then EVE is practically dead. I think they really need to have this for this winter.
I had a much longer reply ready but the stupid forums logged me out and I don't have time to retype it right now :(.
What I don't agree with is ECM is fine, and t1 cruisers don't need rebalancing.
I had a list of about 20 different ship types we could use and modules but the forum ate them :( |

I agree with you completely. One of the things that made this game amazing during the early years was the sense we were living and playing in an evolving universe with an arms race and technological development going on around us and in the corporate laboratories. I remember the fiasco of the tech5 mining laser that Torfi accidentally gave to Taggart and while most of the server errupted in outrage I looked at it and thought - wow, tech 5 eh ... this game has some legs.
So why the hell did we get stalled out on t2 and one class of wormhole ships.
Yes to new content and continual technological development.

The stagnation really is in 0.0. For the most part the rest of EvE goes about its merry way oblivious to the Forums and the world around them.
Part of the problem has to do with current game mechanics and mechanics of the past. The other half of the problem has to do with 0.0 players.
Old mechanics issues; Super Capitals The old Sov system that stuck a station in every system. The lack of ability to change or remove stations. The actual Alliance system needs a shake up as well. Corporations should hold SOV not Alliances. I would say balancing but lets face it, you will never be done there. Basically 0.0 needs to be less stable.
And the other half is that the players have worked themselves into a STALEmate of sorts right now which drives PvP'rs completely up the wall. Right now there is no war in 0.0 and that is bad.

Being oblivious to stagnation is not the same as proving the environment is not stagnant. And even mission runners, empire industrialists, traders, researchers and peaceful hisec players need something to work towards. People do missions to get shinier ships to do more missions to get shinier ships in impressive fireworks. What happens when you have an officier-pimped marauder and can do lev4s with utter ease in hisec and print your subscription plexes now? You've hit the top of your game really.
We need content for everyone to keep them interested in the long term and encourage them to take investment risk to secure grander things.

I agree on some points but not on others.
IT has more to do with the two major types of players in a MMO. You have the casual players and harcore players
Hardcore Player tend to have alot of time to play and hense progress at a faster rate then casual players. THis is the harder group to please and as they can burn through content. YOu see alot of them in 0.0 where there is a high demand on the players to be there when called.
THe casual players tend to have alot less time to play and hense progress at a much slower rate. These players for the most part stay in high-sec and low-sec where they can log on when they want.
In EVE it is a little harder to see, where in a game like everquest it is very clear. Hardcore Burn through an expansion in a week or two and settle out to raid or just quit till the next expansion. Casual level slowly, sometimes not even maxing out there character before the next expansion.
The same types of players are here but the results are very different. So even though a casual player has max'd out there character it takes them ALOT longer to get there. Hense a casual player has more logevity in the game. The hard core characters pretty much live from expansion to expansion and war to war.
CCP has cattered to the hard core players sense day one and even maanged to attract a large following of casual players in the process.
Why, freedom, you have the ability to do anything you want in this game, no other game can claim that. 0.0 is a free for all where players rule, nobody else even comes close to that.
SO now we come to Incarna. Why would a company want to alienate its hard core player base. The truth of the matter is they aren't, they just just can't survive on hardcore players alone.
There just isn't enough of them, if there was, then EVE would have well over a million subs right now. That is the flat out truth, there are NOT enough hard core players out there with any staying power.
So CCP is aiming at a well rounded MMO. One that caters to both hardcore players as well as casual players, a complete MMO like no other. But to do that CCP needs to set aside some resources and to do it. That means less bling for the hardcore players for awhile.
And the price of that is the loss of some subscriptions, but they will get the subscriptions back in the form of new players and hopefully old ones as well. 0.0 will always be for hardcore players.
I don't see why people just don't get it. IF CCP had a million hardcore subscribers then they could have given 0.0 the Bling and given Incarna at the same time.
But no money means no bling. |

Yep, you need a constant stream of new missions and new types of missions to keep mission runners happy.
You need new things to build and new materials to build them with to keep the industrialists happy.
And remember five or six years ago when CCP promised that they were going to look at mining to make it more interesting? Comets! System-wide fields! Fields that need to be probed down! Well I feel sorry for the miners who aren't bots. Dulce et decorum est pro imperium mori. |

I want T3 frigs so that the T3 line doesn't look yet like another unfinished feature. They don't. 4 ships with about 30 roles were introduced.
I want T2 Canes, Harbs, Drakes and Myrms **** in one hand and want in the other and see which one gets full.
I want ECM to be looked at I want T1 cruisers to be looked at so they are not completely useless They are not. Learn how to fly them, and realize they are only supposed to be stronger than t1 frigs and destroyers.
Maybe even a new race with a whole line of new ships and weapons Yes, because we need it. sigh.
Incentives to bring more people into 0.0 (encourage NRDS or at least NRDS organisations anyone?) They are working on that. Unfortunately for the impatient and the haters, it requires a WiS expansion so they can make the changes to boosters to make them "worth it". They are working on Cap re-balance also. NRDS/NBSI policy has **** all to do with CCP.
And much more

This is what gets me. I simply do not believe that Incarna will attract and retain new players to this game. At best its a lipstick on a pig nonsense that might convince people for a few minutes that eve is like wow before they undock and start doing missions and mining. And given the huge wasted development time ... 600 person company 18 months! to produce 1 single room CQ to the detriment of existing features - how on earth can you believe they will produce a fully-featured avatar based game out of that in the time they have alloted before critical subs failure cascade?
Quote:So CCP is aiming at a well rounded MMO. One that caters to both hardcore players as well as casual players, a complete MMO like no other. But to do that CCP needs to set aside some resources and to do it. That means less bling for the hardcore players for awhile.
For less bling read no bling and for hardcore players read anyone. Does anyone really like CQ at the moment? I don't really buy the concept of casual players loading up eve and being content to bum around in their CQ for an hour or two and be satisfied with that. Loading up Eve and doing a mission or two - sure, but then your making my argument about Eve needing more in-space development for mission-runners, new ships for them to use, more challenges, more in space graphical bling.
Quote:And the price of that is the loss of some subscriptions, but they will get the subscriptions back in the form of new players and hopefully old ones as well.
I just don't believe in the myth of the "new player" who will be attracted and retained by incarna. If somebody wants to play an avatar-based SF mmo won't it be knights of the old republic ? or in general guild wars 2 or something? Eve is Eve at the end of the day. Its a flying in space game. If you want spaceships and like the setting then you'll stay. But for the avatars here? I don't buy it.
Quote:0.0 will always be for hardcore players. I don't see why people just don't get it. IF CCP had a million hardcore subscribers then they could have given 0.0 the Bling and given Incarna at the same time. But no money means no bling.
I don't make the distinction you do. Sure there is some content that you could call 0.0 only.
Outposts, bubbles, system upgrades, super caps etc etc.
But new ships, new missions, new graphics, new modules, new tech, new classes of vessel - these things don't have to be 0.0 only and can be used by everyone. I don't support a massive 0.0 focus of development particularly - I think there are many things that are probably equally as important - but I do support a MASSIVE reallocation of CCP resources to Eve as a project and would like to see improvements to 0.0/FW/Lowsec/Highsec/Corp/Alliance tools, Missions blah blah blah - to start rolling out in concert. Just as these things used to be done when the game was growing.

there are now lots of free to play quality games , this game is not going to change, is ccp and is the player base.

I have absolutely no problem with being flamed by people having no clue about the grand scheme of things.
The only real argument against my original post is that 2 years ago after the Dominion failure, we wanted things fixed instead of new features.
It's true, but it's long overdue. Nothing has been done as PROMISED (case in point : faction warfare) and now should be the time we get new content on top of fixed content.
We get neither hence the bunch of veterans letting their accounts expire. You can say what you want they were all playing two years ago, many since 6 years already, boredom didn't came spontaneously because all of a sudden it's been too long, 6 years is a lot of time to get bored already. They all cheered Apocrypha.
I think you are wrong Simetraz, hardcore players are much, much more important for Eve than what you might think. 0.0 is much more important than what casual high sec players think.
The market alone wouldn't be the same without the trillions of stuff blown up in great wars. There wouldn't be so many long time subscribers without alliance leaders recruiting, forming and helping new players to live in insecure space.
You can't tell me your average miner sticks with eve 7 years long. You can't say it's niceguy_15664 that catches the attention of people playing and not playing, the attention of the medias, with how much isk he makes per hour doing lvl4's in his golem.
And at the end of the day eve needs all this fame to survive. This fame is driven by the players. Bore the players, eve is dead. CQ won't help, they want to blow stuff up in spaceships. Hi.
It's clear that CCP allocated all their resources for dust and vampires since 2 years, completely neglecting eve. It's also clear that both will be failures. A FPS has a lifetime of 6 months at most and vampires are a niche in an ocean of identical MMOs. Ask yourself the right questions CCP. |
