Im about to fit a salvager, not the hardest thing in the world but i figured i'd still make a post. If for nothing else it can be fitted as a sticky.
Simply put, what ships are the best when cleaning up after yourself in a mission? And how would you fit them?
Now, in my book a salvager needs to be: A: Resonably fast B: Able to fit several salvagers \ tractor beams. C: Have a decent cargo, enough to loot + salvage in a full level 4 mission. D: Be worth the money, inexpensive is good.

I use a Catalyst. Cheap to buy/fit and works well.
HI: 4 tractor / 4 salvagers MD: AB II, Cap Recharger II LO: 3x Cargo Expander II
830something cargo space, goes about 440m/s with decent skills and I run everything pretty constant, and doesn't run out of cap (with AB off)
Quick and easy, and cleans up most l4 missions in one trip.

The real question is, are you salvaging your own wrecks or somebody else's?
When cleaning out somebody else's mission (note, you cannot use tractorbeams on other people's wrecks) I use an Executioner with two salvagers in highs, a cold-gas arcjet and cap recharger in mids, and two nanofibers in the lows (or one nanofiber and one cap power relay). Atron can use the exact same setup, and Condor or Slasher can use very similar setups, but I believe the Executioner has a stronger capacitor and you need it for ninja salvaging.
Of course if you want to salvage your own wrecks (why?) you might try a Stabber with 3 tractors and 3 salvagers. 10MN afterburner and large shield extenders in the mids. The speed and buffer tank make it great for salvaging those triple-BS spawns you're farming in 0.0 where you've left the smaller ships alive, and it can fit nearly 900m3 of cargo.

TO avoid stating the obvious with Marauders, I'd still strike a bat for the Eris and interdictors in general. You'll have plenty of hold to bring anything worth their cargo, easily the fastest ship with 8 highs for good salvage, and they're just a humble 8 mil a pop. 35-40 mil fully fitted with rigs and even partly deadspace fittings. If you want to bring _everything_ with you, nothing short of a marauder with cargoexpander will be able to bring everything at once, best option is to just bring it all together in a can, bookmark and pick it up with your random hauler.
Other than that anything with a decent amount of highs work, especially the minmatar ones.

Edited by: Halafian on 05/04/2008 00:13:04 I've been experimenting with an Apocalypse. I can run 4 salvagers and 4 tractor beams at once, a t2 afterburner, and 7 t2 expanders in lows for a cargo of around 3800m3. Seems to be good. My destroyer salvager was over-whelmed by the changes in module size, and I get tired of hauling a can around to put stuff in. Mostly I tried it because it was the best available ship in my hanger after I went back to the Abaddon for actually running the mission. -----

Joe - if you fit a Cap Battery instead of a Cap Charger, you should still be able to maintain full cap while AB'ing around. I do. (Actually, I was about to tell you I knew where you got your fit from - but it's just different enough to be unique.)

I've heard you mention this fit, but I actually had tried it myself, first, after finding a Punisher too slow. Since then I've also tried the Atron but have yet to experiment with the Slasher or Condor. Those each have three highslots and I'll bet the Slasher has some speed, but I don't know if they have the juice. Frankly, I'm usually the guy flying the probing ship, and my corpmates fly the ninjas.

That's my setup too, except I go for 5 tractors and 3 salvagers, and my AB skillz aren't quite as good as Jennae's, so I only go like 420 m/s with the AB turned on.
It's a good setup, and I recommend it (try both 5/3 and 4/4, and maybe 3/5 too, to see what you like best).

For salvaging and looting tractorable wrecks, I've tried all four destroyers and found that the Thrasher and Catalyst were better than the other two. Can't remember why, but I would always pick one of those two if I had a choice of destroyers. Nevertheless, the stabber is better, and the Armageddon may be the best of all, for that type of work.

Heh - I work mostly alone, as most of my buddies would rather grief miners or pvp 'small game', so I've got the probing ship as well. Find and bookmark the spots, quick ship flip and I'm back in the ninja game.

It uses a 10mn Afterburner. It has a maximum speed of about 900m/s. That's faster than the tractored wrecks and cans. And it sucks up you cap in a really short time. But it's great to get scattered wrecks.

Edited by: Ghengis Tia on 07/04/2008 17:32:20 While a Destroyer may be faster than the Hurricane, it doesn't have the hitpoints you may need in below 0.5 space.
I just have a 10mn ab, will try the 100mn as the post above suggests, it is dreadfully slow otherwise.
You probably wouldn't want to put Salvage Tackle on a destroyer, due to its paper-thin armor, at least a Hurricane will protect your investment.
