Alts need to be removed forever.
It removes reality to the game.
I know that some players actually play (not grief) with their alts, and i propose tranfering those skill points to the main char.
I don't want this to be imediatly implemented, because i know that players with a very low sec. rating need their Alts to survive (due to the security rating "malfunction") but as soon as PC station come into play all that will change.
It would be nice also for 0.0 people/pirates to "order" the goods from hauling/trading corp to deliver to them (with corps that have mutual trust of course).
This alt stuff is only used as a way of "exploiting" the game reallity. One account, one char. Simple. Selling Raven BPC ME20 3M at Yulai 1st Station |

How about no?
What will happen if you take away alts is that the 3/10/14 day trial accounts become overused. The server only allows 800 trial accounts on it at any given time, if people start using trials as a way to create alts then new players would never get the chance to actually log onto TQ and try the game.
I say create a 'family' tab on everyone's character info screen and list the accounts other characters there.

Well i do think that alts needs to be removed, but since i doubt CCP would do that, some kind of way to track "what chars" are on one account would be nice... or force it so that you can only have your chars in one corp.

I dont grief with my alts but use them in corperation management and trade functions. They do have some skills, but my main character already has the same, so I would have to say no to removing alts.
Now i wouldn't mind people knowing who my alts are, but some would and I dont know what the future holds. I suggest making it agent service. But make it take a week to do and rather exspensive so its not easy to do. I think corps would be willing to pay 1mil isk or more to find out the alts of an employee before giving him much access. ------------------------------------- Quantum Industries

Sadly I don't have any alts. I have 3 characters I play evently and independently of eachother. One is a miner/researcher another a fighter/agent runner and the last is working in trading. So I should not be allowed to enjoy more aspects of the game? ---------------- What's a rumor on page one is a fact on page two |

Alt characters need to go fullstop. The potential abuses and workarounds to the game choices you make vastly outweighs the ideal useage that was originalyl invisioned for them.
Granted some people do use alts legitmately but I would be willing to bet my life that for every legit alt there are atleast 20 alts that are use to scam, grief, abuse, scout circumvent otherwise innaccesable options due to ingame choice on main character etc etc..
You get the idea, alts are a bad idea because they are too easily abused.

Edited by: Caeneus on 19/04/2004 00:39:05 Another no here. I enjoy using my alts. They allow me to play the game without having to speak to anyone just so I can cruise along enjoying what I choose to do without distraction.
I would also say no to allowing other people to see them. Asking for reality in a fictional space sim is asking to much. Where would be the realism if you could know another persons character who are probably a different race?
Can't think of anything witty to put here. |

I would vote for alts to go. It is a very controversial issue though so I don't expect that to happen.
Maybe the right thing to do is to keep them but lessen the potential for abuse.

No.
However they are too easily disposable.
My alts are used, one has survived from may 2003 while the other has been recycled once.
Make it so that an alt (particularly alts that have performed a transgression, i.e. kestrel alts in 1.0 space) take longer to delete than the current 10 hours or so.

sorry but I totally disagree.
I have 2 alts that I use a lot, one for caravan raiding to absord the neg rating and another with ref V/ref eff IV and mass production so many people use their alt constructively on here.

If the abuses cant be fixed they need to go. And before you griefers, and even the legitimate users who get caught up in this start name calling and your usuall board antics, remember that nobody would be calling for this if certain people didnt feel a pathological need to ruin newbies day by whatever abuse of the game mechanics possible.

That pathological need to grief wouldn't be stopped by removing alts. I've played enough MMGs to know that griefers will do anything to cause other players pain. Even a game as inoffensive (and sleep inducing) as The Sims Online has players who have found ways to disrupt other players enjoyment.
In the end, it is the legitimate alt players who are penalised if you remove alts.

Hey i dont wan to loose my alts either, but the abuse is out of controll atm. I would rather loose my alts, however, then have a change where pc ships cant be targeted above .04 space, for example. Yes some people will get second accounts to do the same thing, but it will cut down on the number.
Alts are a bad idea in every mmorpg, and the source of all evil in said virtual worlds. So i say kill all the alts, let God sort them out. Got to break a few eggs to amke an omlett, so if you are one of the few people who actually use alts for a legitimate reason...Consider yourself an eggshell

Imperishable suggested a highly useful alternative to the banning of alts:
Allow trasnaction records to be hackable.
What this does is exposes who is actually bankrolling characters. If you have an Alt corp funded by a main corp, that's being used for harrasment/griefing then the main corp and the main chars is open to exposure and retribution.
Conversly, if someone has two or three characters who actually are operating independently of eachother, they can do so, without problems.
It shuts down the people who just use alts as disposable faces, while still allowing people to have multiple characters.

I "vote" for them to go. Perhaps the main char could get all the skill points that was put into the alts. That way folks wouldn't loose any points at least.

Abuse?
How can anybody distinguish this so called "abuse" being caused by an "alt" on the same account as a main character, and an "alt" on another account?
Any evidence of this so called "abuse"?

Quote: Alts need to be removed forever.
Can you give some examples on how ALTs hurt 'the game'?
I hear griefers, but can you be specific?
ALTs do have purpose, as there are many who have them for those purposes, but when I hear of ALTs who cause 'newbs' grief; what type of grief are you talking about? Protect the 'newb' from what type of grief and can that grief be dealt without an ALT thus making the deletion of ALTs pointless?
I have heard scammers use ALTs. So what, a scammer could use any character to do what he/she wants in the game. If the newb wants to purchase a battleship but ends up with a frigate renamed to a battleship; the newb should have reviewed what they purchased.
ALTs used to start a dummy corp to name war on another corp? So what, they are using one of their 3 profiles to play a game where it is being paid for to have those 3 characters in the game. If they paid to have those 3 characters on that 1 account and trained them up; they are using the game the way it is allowed by giving up training on their other character(s). I see nothing wrong with that.
There is even a 10 hour or so wait now I hear for those who recycle into new characters, which I guess is somehow it was abused for something, but I don't remember why it was added. But almost a year into the game, you can't just take away ALTs when people have been paying for those 3 characters to use them.
Well, if ALTs were done away with, I would give up 2/3 of my players to get 2/3rd off the price per month.

I agree with Harry. Make it possible to hack into banks and see what trade people have done. Of course, also make it possible to get caught in some way (so that people using it for commercial and/or industrial espionage can't do it with complete impunity).
Right then and there the problem get's solved, and no user of legit alts has to be ripped off of his/her livelihood, and those that like the "shadyness" thing in such businesses can keep at their fun. Make it an agent service or somesuch.

Actually, just about every MMORPG has the ability to create secondary "mule" characters that either aren't trained at all or aren't trained as much.. they can perform tasks the "main" can't get to at the time, or just hold items or transport them..
One great approach to this is in Final Fantasy XI, where each additional character above the original one costs an extra dollar per month to maintain.
At any rate, Alts should stay in EVE. It's idiotic to expect people to pay 15 bucks per month for one character with no option for an alternative to whatever that character is geared towards.

Quote: I know that some players actually play (not grief) with their alts, and i propose tranfering those skill points to the main char.
This would not be fair, heres an example: alt 1 has very high memory/int (low percep/will) for being a science character, and thus he trains those skills very fast.
alt 2 has very high percep/will (low memory/int) for being a fighter and pilot, and as a result he trains gunnery and piloting skills very fast.
combining the two would make a character that trains everything very fast, since you cant have a single character that has attributes so high as to train every type of skill as fast as possible.
This, unfortunately is why they cant get rid of alts. yes, some people abuse alts and use them to spy, and i know this for a fact. then again, there are people who make a primary charcter, and then an alt hauler, or an alt with high charisma to train corp skills.
I do agree with the original poster that there should have never been alts because i feel that you should only get one chance at a character, instead of making alts so you can do everything yourself, and also the fact that people do abuse them to spy and do stupid stuff that they would otherwise not do with their main char.
the only solution i see to this is that corporation officials are able to see the names of alts for any corp member. besides this, there is nothing else that can be done.

I agree with the original poster, this game would be better off without alts.
When I trade with someone, I'd like to be sure of that I am trading with an established character, not some lameo vegetable who will be deleted within 10 hours. When I get shot AFK'ing through Yulai, I'd at least have some comfort in that it was a real character who shot me, not some lameo vegetable who will be deleted within 10 hours. When I am hunting players in 0.0, I'd be a so much better feeling to know that every player I encounter is a real guy and not some lameo vegetable who will be deleted within 10 hours.
Overall, I think deleting the lameo vegetables who will be deleted within 10 hours would greatly enhance the feeling in this universe, since it would actually be filled with established characters instead of lameo etc. etc.
Second accounts are OK, because at least then the person takes serious measures about having his alts, but free people who you cannot even train will forever and ever just be vegetables flying around in noobships...
(Carbide Industries for example: They have THREE separate accounts which they use for absolutely nothing than just having in pirate hotspots being silent local channel scouts. Kinnda lame, but if the idiots from Carbide wants to pay an addition fortune per month having them, let them... just don't let it be the way it is today with free alt characters)

Edited by: kurg on 19/04/2004 08:20:32 i agree with the original poster, either alts have to go (my preference) or it has to be possibly to find the 'real char' behind that alt.
with the exception of everadio, alts are only used for exploiting:
-being able to mine/haul etc. despite a war being on -being able to kill ppl cheaply (the typical yulai incidents) -to spy (which should be done by real chars) -extorsion (ill pop you can if you dont give me .... isk)
etc.

I use 3 alts to research bp's, create items and keep my old corps name so it won't be abused by others. Also i use those offices as storing capacity for large ammounts of minerals, removing alt characters would mean i would have to give all that up, so i dont think i would vote for this. __________________________

What I would like to see is everyone's alts reveled if you use an agent to find out or posted in their profiles. All the scammers would have to buy different accounts. 0.o It's not you... no wait it is you. |
