I'm thinking of making a second character into a hauler/trade alt since yarring has caused my security status to drop too low to enter Rens. Now I have a few questions: What is the best stats combination for this or should I just go balanced? Can I start out of the box with this and if not is it advisable to train up an alt on the same account a bit (got no cash to support a second account)? And if so what are the vital skills I should get?

One option is to start a high willpower/charisma business -> entrepreneur character, train racial frigate and spaceship command to 3 and industrial ships to 1. Buy an industrial, then get the skill 'Retail' and train it as high as you can spare the time for. That will allow you to place several dozen buy/sell orders at a time. The character would then be self sustaining with no further training time invested.
All you have to do then is place a bunch of buy and sell orders, then spend one day a week to top up the orders, pick up your buys and distribute them to the appropriate trade hubs. You can also spend all your time studying the market and moving from region to region like a gypsy, finding the highs and lows and taking your cut of the difference.
Easy as pie. For those with the head for it.

Sounds worth it. I guess moving items from character to character through the contract system is possible? As obviously the characters can't trade directly.

an amarr/khanid trader can train to bestower and fit cargohold II's, istabs, wcs, and an AB in under 24 hours.
that'll give you decent out of the box trading skills and a 13k m3 hauler (10k m3 if you fit one wcs or istab) for ~24 hours of training time and around 3million isk (270k for the industrial book, 500k for the bestower, 2.1m for 3 cargohold II's, ~230k for misc. expenses like navigation and ab books etc.)
this is the route I would take if I were to make the character on the same account as my main. - another option is to pay for a couple months of a second account and then transfer the character to your main account when he's ready (or see how much cash that costs - convert to ISK with GTCs and see what kind of hauler/trader that would buy you on the public character market)
either way, Amarr haulers are the best until you invest industrial IV+ in another race.

Pretty much. You just chuck everything you want to transfer into a contract somewhere that the new character can get to. You can also just transfer as much isk as you want from anywhere.
If you do the three newb corp mission arcs you'll get 4 ships, several skillbooks including Salvage (800k) and a set of +1 implants to start your trading off.
You don't have to be Amarr to use their ships. I think business characters start with only one point in racial frigate anyway, and the skillbooks for every race are available in all the starter regions.
The Bestower is the obvious choice, but there's also the Sigil. It's only 3000m3 vs 4800m3 for the Bestower, but it has an extra low slot and is a lot faster and better looking :) Depends what you want to do with it. 3000m3 base volume is enough to keep up with a retreiver for ore hauling with a few expanders. If you want to trade commodities or other high volume, low value goods on small margins then the Bestower should be a marginally more apropriate boat. For ship parts and other high value, low volume stuff, the extra speed and low slot of the Sigil give more options. Play with both in EFT and see what you come up with.
With no skills, filling the lows with expander 2s, Sigil has ~10500m3 @ 115 m/s, and an align time of ~16 seconds. The Bestower has ~12500m3 @95 m/s and an align time of 19 seconds. Not a lot in it really.
