Edited by: CCP Prism X on 12/04/2008 13:31:48 Why would we do it the Valve way when we can do it the CCP way?
And I want to really emphasize that we're not releasing a patch which allows us to snatch this information. This information is already exposed by your operating system for good reasons (well not so good reasons to some people). We're just logging it now for information purposes rather than just discarding it.
Also, posting in a Jenny thread.
Above is a quote from Prism X regarding the graphics card complaints. This post likely was going to be lost in one of the never ending flames.
Personally I never realized that Windows just blasts this bit of computer information out there without programs asking for it. Some of you may also not realize this but Windows and just about every other operating system out there whenever you visit a website broadcasts what web browser you are using, what operating system, the version of it, and likely all kinds of other bits of info without being asked to do so.
Many websites, especially the major ones collect this info from every visitor and store it up without asking, or letting you know.
CCP on the other hand is letting us know that they intend to now start storing this information that windows has just been throwing at them for a long time. Most other companies wouldn't even bother to tell you that they are collecting this data.
Now that I have a better understanding of what's going on I applaud CCP for their openess.
The only person really to curse here is Microsoft, and good luck chewing them out.
Personally I would like it if after this new patch EVE would ask me if I would willing participate even though Microsoft is just throwing out this info to them. I would personally answer yes. But the option to opt out would be a very polite move by CCP.
Thanks Prism X for the comments and for posting despite all the flames.

For everyone else I'm asking for the golden rule in this thread.

I agree.
People fail to realise that CCP is doing it to that their future products run as good as possible. I would love to see CCP just make everything for the most high-end systems possible, and people would whine like...

Not to be disrespectful to your eloquent post Zorai, but as the nature of the information that's being given out is not personal, I don't see it as any cause of concern.

The you missed the thread with a bunch of whiners stating their privacy was being invaded and CCP could take their graphics card version from their cold, dead hands.
Yeah, it's a really stupid complaint.

I personally don't care if ccp knows what graphic card I use, etc., but the issue really is this--if they record the graphic card information and at the same time or in the same data record the IP of the user connected to the graphic card, that violates several laws that I know of in several countries and states, and that's (I think) the issue people are worked up about (most forum threads a re tl;dr fests).

Now collecting personal information like IP, username, ect... along with the model of my graphics card would bother me. But then again CCP already does have that information to. My IP gets sent to them every time I connect to the game. They have my credit card number, email, mailing address ect... In truth what else really is there to hide. Recruitment Thread EKT Website |

OMG they might find out that 95 percent of the comunity uses higher graphic cards then they thought, and can increase the visuals more in future patches.
A few years ago in EQ, they wanted to increase the graphic's. After looking and the comunities cards they found out that allot did not meet the new requirments, So they got with a manufacturer and offered discounted cards to the players.
Unless they are getting information from me that they will use to spam/blackmail/steal/humiliate/or any other discomforting thing I cannot think of, I just really do not see the harm in them collecting it. Ohh of course I know what the doomsayers are saying. First this, Then they will want our blood type so they can sneak in in the middle of the night and harvest our organs so CCP members can live forever.

Yes. There is a difference in 'receiving information' and 'making use of information' though, and I guess that's the touchy subject.
But seriously, whining about them knowing which graphics card you use is completely bogus - it's just massive trolling.
CCP to my knowledge, however, DO collect IP-addresses as well as a unique Hardware Identifier which is like a checksum of all the hardware you have on your computer, to uniquely identify your computer in the game.
But I also understand the need to have such logging, and in some cases I wish CCP would log more about what the client (computer) does.

Having all this information together is what concerns me. Credit card, name, address, etc. + IP + hardware data = valuable marketing tools. The hardware information is put out by Windows for software correlation/facilitation, not for gathering statistical data. Using it for such is an abuse of the mechanic. Yes, other websites gather your hardware data automatically. The difference is that CCP already has additional personal data, that combined with hardware information puts them in a unique position to actually make use of the data. The fact that they are unwilling to seek customer consent prior to gathering this information, or to issue any legal statements ensuring proper use of the data they gather, is what makes me suspicious of their motivations and intentions. Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 14/04/2008 23:34:17 As noted they have all our info for payment/account purposes unless you use GTC I suppose.
Them collecting my card info is no biggie. Why would anyone care?
The only caveat I have to this is since CCP can match me up with my card and other info (including e-mail and postal address) that they do not sell it (or give it) to any third parties without my permission. I do not know if they have a privacy policy to that effect or not.
Beyond that though this is a tempest in a teapot.

You don't need to worry if you're behind 7 proxies like most people.
Anyone that has used Linux would know that using 'wget' for files will tell you the RAM and CPU of the computer you're connecting to.

I'm pretty sure that CCP will have to have a policy. As part of the Schengen accord I imagine they are subject to the rules of the EU wrt to data protection. Those rules are way stricter than most countries (a lot tougher than the US rules for instance).
Of course being subject to a particular law doesn't automatically mean that you adhere to it but I'm sure CCP are a reputable company. They will be doing everything they reasonably can to keep our information secure.
Of course even a reputable organisation can screw up occasionally but I really couldn't give a stuff who knows what graphics card I have and nor could most gamers. Most people are happy to volunteer the information (and a lot more besides) in thread relating to system performance. |

Actually, i distinctively remember CCP talking about a third-party company storing the creditcard data, in context of the security hole that had happened when a person got access to the database, some months back. |
