Hi everyone!
Here we are again, another patch for increased stability and bug fixes. Looking at the previous post patch discussion thread, it seems that most people are happy with the stability, but rare cases of crashing still occurs. I would like to point out that using the Bug report system is the best way to help out finding issues with the client and fixing them. - I would like to gather your post-patch Mac experience in this thread.
As usual, I would still like to know about the client stability. But in this thread please also make a small list, 3, 5 or 7 points of what you believe are still the top (X) issues in the Mac client.
With that said, I hope you enjoy the patch!
- If you are still having problems with corrupted rendering or with crashes try clearing your cache by doing the following:
1. Open Finder 2. Go to Home 3. Open Library 4. Open Preferences 5. Open EVE Online Preferences 6. Open p_drive 7. Open Local settings 8. Open Application Data 9. Open CCP 10. Open EVE 11. Move all the files and folders to Trash. (File called History.txt, Folders called: "c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility", "Cache" and "settings" 12. Restart your client
Note that doing this will delete your ingame settings such as Bookmark folders, Overview settings, color settings etc.

My alt in Ammold has gone from about 18 fps to about 25 fps in the asteroid belt but my main in Ourserlert has only gone from about 28 fps to about 30 fps these are still lower than they were pre Trinity 1.1. There has been a little improvement but I was expecting more
I suppose that I'm just generally hacked off that my 5 year old PC that I just replaced with this nice shiny Mac Pro was getting similar fps ... in general the fps with the Mac client sucks compared to the windows client.

Try downloading the full installer: http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/mac/eve-001306_53162_mac.dmg Open the file you just downloaded and click and drag it to the applications folder. Please let me know if that solves your issue or not. |

I'm getting very, very frequent crashes (< 3 minutes a run), making the game unplayable. I can even get it to crash on the login screen. Neither a fresh download nor nuking Library/Preferences/EVE Online Preferences fixed the issue. Reported as bug #56360.
- Mac Pro running 10.5.2 - 2x quad core 2.8 GHz Xeons - 10 GB RAM - Geforce 8800 GT (512 MB)
Worked fine (well, as fine as usual) before the patch.

No real issues so far. However, as a comparison on FPS, my underpowered Macbook (1.8Ghz Intel, Single Core, 2GB RAM, 64MB INtegrated graphics) now gets 15-16 FPS in space. After 1.1 update it was 3-5 FPS. Fair enough, not bad for an unsupported machine. However, my brand-spanking new 2.5 Ghz Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM, Dual Core, and GeForce 8600M GT 512MB gets 35-50 FPS in space.
All that additional hardware gets me approx 15-35 FPS.
The Mac client really needs a bit of work.
But compared to the problems post-1.1. I am a happy punter (fingers crossed).

Edited by: Mahandra Hunter on 15/04/2008 19:58:31 Edited by: Mahandra Hunter on 15/04/2008 19:56:55 Macbook Pro, 2,4ghz, 2GB, 50gb HD free, Nvidia 8600M GT with 256 VRAM, OSX 10.4.11, fully updated.
* FPS seems to be up 10 points or so in space EXCEPT when approaching a structure, or even passing a planet in warp, when it dips sharply. Haven't tested it for the old "5-20 sec freeze when jumping into a room" issue (or similar when approaching any PVP goings-on).
* F11 minimap still borked.
* Odd happening entering Urlen: the background (not structures or planets) was scrambled (and oddly, half the minimap readable). Docked and the station was not scrambled. Undocked and Urlen still was. Jumped out and the next system was fine. Jumped back and Urlen still scrambled. Reset screen rez - but didn't click "keep" - and that cleared the issue.
Points to a flaky driver for my Nvidia 8600M GT

Eve is completely broken for me under 1.2 -- black screen as reported by an earlier poster. Deleting the preferences results in the sound playing, but nothing else.
This is with a macbook air (I use the client to update my skills training, no PvP or exiting stations for me!)
Erk :-(
Console reports the following:

I get lots of "ZTESwapperMain::checkUsbcdDevice Restore to the Initial state" errors and google doesn't appear to know what they are. They don't appear related to any EVE problem, however.

Also getting the same black screen problem -- there are three or four orange pixels on the top left of my screen, and everything else is black. However, when I mouse around the blackness, the cursor changes from one form to another--some places it's a text cursor, other places it's the crosshairs, other times the arrow.

Submitted a bug report for this. Apparently they have decided that they're not supporting the Macbook Air anymore, and the new patch breaks the client for the Air. Which is very annoying, since I've been playing on the Air for the past month without a problem (yes, it's slow, but you can play).

Alright, you guys can ignore the above two questions, I figured it out.
Anyways, my bug report about the black screen at startup was "attached to a defect", so it appears they've identified and are working on the issue.

Initial experience,
flawless patch.
running full screen 1920x1200 and max settings (audio and eve voice enabled) I'm getting 35-37 fps in space. Even zoomed in on my ship.
f11 map is bugged to crap ... graphics totally corrupted. Looks like those 3d pictures you used to get ... all those dots you had to stare at until the picture popped out at you. Think this is an old issue though.

Furhter to above - many minor by really irritating graphics glitches with corrupted environment backgrounds (when in space). Sometimes restricted to 1 system, sometimes "follows you around".

Having the same problem some others seem to experience. Eve crashes constantly, often before I can complete login. Worked fine before the latest patch and I tried to uninstall and reinstall without any help.

After Trinity 1.1 the client seems much more stable, to the point that I reenabled sound to see if the game is playable.
My top issues currently are: 1. The client is a huge resource hog even when minimized. Actually, there doesn't seem to be much drop in CPU use when the client is minimized. Add to that the fact that due to some bad coding (busyloops?) in certain areas of the game (login screen, in station) just running the client makes system graphics jumpy and you get a system that's hardly usable with the client running in the background. To see what I mean, run the client, enter login screen or character selection, command-tab to desktop and check out the Dock zoom effect. Also, think of the heat.
2. FPS is drastically lower on the OS X client. I get 50-80 FPS in space with Classic under Windows, and 15-30 on OS X.
Now I agree my system (1st gen MacBook Pro, 2 GB RAM) isn't top notch, but it should well be able to run the Classic client without any major side effects. With performance like that, I can't even imagine how the Premium version would run |

Is this confirmed? Pretty crap tbh if its true, considering I have an Air and what I love about it is the ability to log into EVE at work and do skill changes and logistic runs.

I am experiencing screen freezes. This makes it impossible for to start an engagement or even to do some simple ratting in low sec. Sometimes I really wonder why i am still paying for two accounts.
How difficult can it be to commit yourself (beeing CCP) to present the community a decent OSX client. If would produce the same quality in RL someone would sue my ass off.
What a pity, EVE is such a great game.

The Macbook air was never officially supported, just like the regular mac book. The reason for this in both cases are the graphics cards. We have never said that it is supported. However, if it somehow was made working worse than before on an unsupported system, we would like to find the reason for it. The best way to provide us information is via the bug report system.

I think I've found a workaround for the black-screen issue. If you right-click on the Eve application, you can open the Package Contents. Within the package contents, there's a folder called MacOS. Within that, there's a file called cider.
If you open the cider application, it will run a script in the terminal that will start up eve, but, at least in my case, it won't go into the black-screen like actually running the application does.
After doing this, the Eve app works fine.
Now, I don't know if this is a safe thing to do, or if there are problems caused by doing this, but it did let me log in and restart my skill-training, which is what I was worried about.
Let me know if this works for any of you?

I have just posted a bug report.. hope it helps. I have the same problem all the time. When i press ESC and choose QUIT GAME, everything goes weird with my computer:
The Finder crashes repeatedly when i click on items, programmes won't start or start, then crash. The only fix is Repair Permissions and restart.
I have tested and repeated this on OS X 10.5.2, OS X 10.4.11 and today on OS X 10.4.9 (all fresh installs) I thought it was my system, so i ran all checks and tests and zeroed HD and reinstalled OS but doesn't help... Please CCP, sort this out.... am i the only one with these problems?

I'm thinking about submitting a bug report, but I wanted report what happened to me today for the benefit of people who suffer from the black screen issue. I have been playing EVE on my Macbook (not supported) and faced no issues after 1.2. Until today. I got some crap on screen and tried to clear it with alt-crtl-enter. Resulting into CTD. I started the client again was faced with a black screen! For the 1st time. Tried the usuall tricks - clear cache, scrap preferences, repair permissions, even rebooted the book. Nothing seemed to help. Back before 1.2 I used to have a customized config-file (that some one posted on these forums some weeks or months ago. Can't find the post anymore) that seemed to help the game on Macbooks and Mac Minis. It had some tweaks with wineserver. In desperation I switched the client to use the old config file - and voilß the client was visible again. Amazing. So the black screen issue might be fixable with some configuration.

This works for me too -- for the first time since that "fatal update". I'm actually thrilled! :-)
Whilst I appreciate that someone'd have to be insane to PvP with a MBA, it's damned handy for updating skills and monitoring the markets, etc.
I'd love to see a lightweight client or support in the API for doing stuff like that but it'd probably make it too easy to automate skill plans and whatnot. Shame really, that'd be awesome...
Thanks for posting the workaround!

As a sidenote, the MBA is quite happy with the Windows client assuming you've got a Bootcamp XP partition... it's still kinda glitchy (it claims you can run premium content but last I tried that really weirded things out, pure orange ships ahoy) but at least it worked. Framerate about twice as fast as the Mac version, which almost gets it into double-figures... ;-)
I love EVE on my MBA, despite it's not exactly being a graphical powerhouse -- I'd happily switch off every graphical effect and texture to run it smoothly though. Yeah I know -- not gonna happen, but it's nice to dream... :-)

Now, I don't know if this is a safe thing to do, or if there are problems caused by doing this, but it did let me log in and restart my skill-training, which is what I was worried about.
Let me know if this works for any of you?
This also worked for me!!! Thanks so much! Wooo! :D |

I was running pretty much flawlessly in Tiger (10.4.9), but I just upgraded to Leopard (10.5.2) and I have some issues.
1.) Performance hog when minimized. In Tiger, I used to be able to minimize Eve and go back to the finder and do stuff like surf, mess with Vent, etc. Now, Eve still monopolizes the processors even when minimized so i can't really do anything without alot of hassle (lag).
2.) My audio is glitched when I leave Eve such that I can't change the master volume on the machine with the volume keys. Logging out and back in fixes the problem.
When running the Classic windows client under Crossover Games, I don't have either of these issues,..however it doesn't give quite the performance of the official Eve client. |

Additional to above.
Had occasion to have an evening of gang-based mission running recently. In mission rooms was barely get 4-10fps once more than 3 joined the party, with huge freezes on entry, while the environment loaded. Lucky to have a good booster with us.
Also, I've noticed that the fans go mental when I am docked (MBP 2.4ghz, 2gb, Nvidia 8600M GT).

My goodness, you're right! Thanks. A temporary solutions I suppose.
Originally by: Jane Pendleton I think I've found a workaround for the black-screen issue.

I'm currently putting together the patch notes for Mac and Linux. The Macbook Air issue has been resolved and you should now be able to run it again like before. Please note that we still do not officially support it and there could be cases where it doesn't work.

You wouldn't happen to have a release date on that note?

So, can we expect those notes in the next patch...or in this one? |

They've been sent off to the Community team and should be up there already. |

So, anyone know where the community team is so we can slap them silly?

Edited by: Yamahita on 01/07/2008 04:42:32 This seems to have resolved my constant crashing . . . at least so far. I also tried the new port which didn't resolve the issue but did seem to help, however it's difficult to gauge since the crashes were random. Still having some graphics issues with what looks like text files being loaded in as patterns applied to 3d objects but I can live with that for now.
Anyhow, thanks for the help and hopefully things will remain stable! |
